Latest Update: I can't find it "In Stock" at MSRP ($199) anywhere. Everyone that has it is marking it up, including beach camera. At this point, your best bet would be to place an order with B&H and wait for it to ship.
Original Post:
This is either a) not in stock, b) sold out, or c) marked up to $300 at most places so I'm considering this a pretty good deal. B&H currently has this brand new, prime lens IN STOCK. Perfect for D40-D90 users.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edited to add: They also have a Hoya 52mm Glass, Multi-Coated UV Filter (UV0) for $13.35. Link
Also there's Live CashBack for Adorama - not sure about B&H though. Mine shipped and is on its way
EDIT actually there's 2.0-3.5% CB for B&H! Nice deal! I don't get the 2.0-3.5% though - how do you know what is 2.0% and what's 3.5%, and what's in between...?
Adorama said:New item not available yet. Delivery expected to start late March 2009. Please Note: You can can add this item to your shopping cart and as soon as it arrives we will ship it to you. We do not charge your card for any backordered items. We only charge your card when we actually ship.
Thanks OP. Just curious as to why someone might get this if these cameras usually ship w/ 18-55mm lenses. Sorry for my naivety, as I am new to the photo game. Thanks.
It would be the equivalent of a 50mm on a film camera. As it stands, the 50mm on a digital (still a great buy BTW) is more like an 85mm in digital format. The 35mm will go wider and be a bit more flexible for those who want a compact walk around lens that produces super sharp images.

Mmmmm, it's probably good for portraits and photojournalism in general. Dog on your lap - that might be kinda close... I suppose it depends on the size of the dog. Definitely not a siberian husky. But that'd be pretty funny if you had a siberian husky sitting on your lap too

The discussion of prime vs zoom lens really depends on the individual user. Check out this search: Link

I like prime lenses for a few reasons. Faster, so I can get sharper photos. Better low light performance. Less that I have to worry about. For me, and I'm really an amateur, I've just had better results with prime lenses. However, most pros use zoom lenses--and extremely well--so like I said above, it depends on the user.
This is an AF-S lens so it works for D40/D60 users.
35mm DX is a mid-range "normal" focal length, giving you a field of view similar to what your eyes give you when you look at a subject and don't move your head around. A telephoto lens will give you a narrower view than your eyes and a wide-angle lens will give you a wider view. Some people think a "normal" view is boring. Other people think it is a good general purpose lens. If you have a kit lens, set it to 35mm (half way) and look through the viewfinder to see what the field of view is like. Even though this lens does not zoom, you still have a lot of control by moving the lens higher or lower or changing the aperture and shutter speed.
jcb193 said:Would this be considered a "macro lens?"
Not, it doesn't focus that close. This is a replacement for the 50mm lens on a cropped sensor DSLR.
50mm were called "normal" lenses for 35mm film cameras because it's approximately the same view you get from looking out your eyeball.
With that said, a "nifty fifty" is still pretty sweet on a cropped sensor camera. But this is a better normal, walk around, and super fast lens. Oh, and it auto focuses on a D40, something the $100 50mm lens does not.

Joking aside, but if you are going to do some type of portraits, get the 50mm 1.8 instead (about half price). What camera body do you have? If you have a D40 or D60, the 50mm 1.8 will not AF though. The 35mm will.
Bokeh on 1.8 lenses are amazing. Don't ask here, google it!

Get the 500mm... the shots of her come out so perfect! uhh, not that I would know or anything.
I'm trying to be as P.C. on here as I can, but I need a lens that is good for taking pictures in a hotel room, of a subject in various poses....18-200 lens is decent, but not as good for closeups.
