(I heard on talk radio that President Obama was going to sign an Executive Order banning the sale of new tactical crayons to civilians, so I'm buying several sets now, and since they'll be grandfathered in, I'll be able to sell these pre-ban crayons for enough money to buy myself a Leica IIIc w/German Luftwaffe markings.) |

This is the suggested retail price. It's a brand new lens and I am not going to be surprise that it will drop to about $179 no too long from now. Don't get me wrong, it's an attractive price for what appear to be a nice lens on paper. I'll wait for a bit more review. If ou are not in a hurry, I would wait a bit. |

I want one that's Y2k compliant. And tactical. As used by the Navy SEALs. I want a lens hood that practically reeks of milspeckiness and tacticality. With tritium nite markings.
Oh, and it had better be "Digital Ready." Like my Mountain House freeze dried mac & cheese. That'll set you back around $877.76 plus tax. |

So, not to harp on a subject, but what would be the best type of lens for the naughty shooting I am trying to do. (I agree that having a super sharp image might not be best for this purpose). Macro? Filter? This Lens? Any recommendations for a Nikon D90 less than $200. |

This lens would probably serve just fine. You don't need macro capability. You don't need filters. If you intend to be in some of the pictures, you might find it convenient to be able to trigger the camera via a small IR remote control, so pick up one of those for your D90. And a decent tripod. That's about it, save for lights. |

Funny joke ! Very clever. Actually I was thinking Macro, because it seems when shooting subjects (or actions) less than 2 feet away (think "taking a picture of my dog sitting in lap" with an 18-200, it was hard to get a good shot. I always have to lean way back (insert joke here). Being very serious about this btw. Thanks for all the help! |

The 35mm would be nice for its wider field of view, but I'm not sure that's worth an extra $100 - for some it will be. My favorite aspect of shooting at such a low f-stop is that you don't have to worry about your subject's background too much. Shooting a portrait against something distracting? No problem - it'll come out as a beautifully blurred background. The only thing I miss in my lens is VR - in the low light situations I often use this lens in, it'd be awfully nice. |

I would spend a bit more to get 18-200mm zoom if you are a casual shooter. If the zooming is not what you want and you have no budget other than $200; then, 18-55mm dx would do a relatively good job. jcb193 said:So, not to hard on a subject, but what would be the best type of lens for the naughty shooting I am trying to do. The only thing I miss in my lens is VR - in the low light situations I often use this lens in, it'd be awfully nice. The D40 and D60 lack an auto focus motor so it needs to be included in the lens, thus, only AF-S lenses can auto focus with them (motor is built into the lens). |

Okay, so I've been looking at buying the 50mm f/1.8 lens for a few months now and am now unsure if I should choose that one over this 35mm f/1.8. My main purpose for the lens would be as a walk-around lens & for taking pictures of food while eating out. I tried using my 18-135 but the barrel tend to get in the way of the flash and leave me with a darkened semi-circle at the bottom of my photos. Given the shorter length of the lens, I'm sure this won't be a problem any longer, but would I have better luck in taking the close up pictures of food? How would the 50mm and the 35mm differ in this regard? edit: i forgot to mention that I have a D80 so the lack of AF-S on the 50mm isn't that big of an issue to me... |

If it helps, I follow Ken Rockwell's website always has great review. He ordered this lens and has a partial review of it until he gets the lens in his hands. The review is linked here: Review link |

He recommended the Hoya UV filter at the bottom of that review and lists a site that sells it for ~$30, but I listed the B&H link in the original post that has it for $13. |
