Been on the market for a good upconverting DVD player and this certainly takes the cake. DCDi chipset and DVD-Audio/SACD make it a no-brainer. Original MSRP $349.99
I was thinking of spending $60 to fix my Panny RP-91 for DVD-A, but if I could get this for $30 more and SACD... crap, I hate spending money, but one box for both.
If only I could find another cheap SACD & DVD-A player.

someone correct me.. but i belive this is one of those players that exhibit the macroblock enhance which is a bug in the faroudja dcdi chip.

Thanks OP, just what I needed to complement the Denon Receiver I received this week! Just to let everyone know, at Crutchfield you can also use coupon code 3A825 for $20 off and this does not require the use of a VISA card. I used my AMEX which doubles the manufacturer's warranty.
Try for an old Toshiba HD-DVD player on craigslist, eBay etc. Believe me, you will not regret. The upscaling quality is one of the best even compared to Oppo/Denon. The Philips on the other hand is a joke. Your TV/projector can upscale better than that.

dtmamg said: how is this compare to marantz dv4001s, from OneCall for $82, thx
A quick glance at the Marantz tells me it lacks optical out, SACD compatibility, no 1080P upscaling, and does not have the DSP features (dolby, bass management etc) of the Denon. Different animals, if you ask me.
Can anyone tell me, Which Toshiba model come close to this Denon DVD Player with similar price and feature (1080p) plus USB port feature (which is not in this Denon DVD Plauer) ?
Does anyone the SACD/DVD-a audio come out of the HDMI to a reciever or analog out only?

Page 16 of the user manual says that all DVD-Audio formats can be carried by HDMI, but no SACD formats.
Also, the firmware of this player can be upgraded. See this AVSForum link for details.

Too good of a deal to pass up especially if you will be using it for non 1080P TV. I wanted it more so for the SACD/DVD-A. SACD is via analog out, I THINK DVD-A is via HDMI, looking through the manual I found on-line now.

Thanks for posting this! This code worked fine on-line where as the intial Visa $20 off code did not.

They are both excellent units. Not sure if one is better than the other but since that Pioneer is unavailable it is pretty much a moot point.

Dumb question... or good question from a dumb person, whichever...
What is SACD? I just got my first HDTV (Vizio from Costco), and I don't have HD Programming or BlueRay. Now, I need to get a DVD player. Something cheap, for all my old movies and TiVo movies-> DVD.

I got it yesterday. I connected to my 720P plasma tv. I played old dvd and this player did good job upconverting it. I can see the difference compare to my panasonic DVD player. so far I am happy with it.

Looks like the Denon is a special purchase price at the moment. I'm afraid the offer codes cannot be combined with another offer. The Denon had been $349.99.
NO go with that code. Has anyone used that code and got the $20 off?

I used this code, "coupon code 3A825 for $20 off" and it worked fine on-line. The Visa code did not work for me. Note, this was on the 16th when I used this code.
Got one but after placing the order button I see NYS Tax included...darn! Didnt know 6th Ave was in NYS. Good deal though with free shipping. Thanks dealcow
thanks OP! i'm in for two. the pair of philips units that i have now are barely functional (one plays only when it feels like it and the other no longer plays in color). i've always had good luck with denon. at this price, it's just too good to pass up. bought from Crutchfield btw using AMEX to extend the warranties.
