Free downloads of the (some day will be) complete organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach, by a competent organist on a nice instrument.

I posted this well over a year ago and it was well received, but his catalog is still growing and I thought there might be some new members who missed it.

linky

Can anyone guess why this was moved from FS to OT?

ETA: I guess giant collections of free mp3s belong in HD, not FS. This thread was first moved to OT, then I put in a support ticket and the helpful staff moved it here. I don't get it, but I guess that's how it works, so if ya'll can spare me the red for having FS in HD, that would be okay with me.

The average is 3-13 minutes.

good stuff, thanks!

Anyone know how to get itunes to recognize track names and/or download in bulk?

Any fans of Bach's compositions for the organ fortunate enough to be in the New Orleans are this weekend should definitely check out the annual 'Bach Around the Clock' marathon at Trinity Episcopal Church on Jackson Ave.

I completely missed your original posting and am fan of Bach organ music, so thank you for re-posting, OP!

And, yes, please keep this sort of thing in Hot Deals.

Twin Cities, Minnesota, Bach lovers can take in a series of five organ and choral concerts in person or over the radio.

Here is more information.

I prefer to upload my organ.

aaaah Bach!

I haven't checked the details lately, but FS greater than $10 or pay first generally goes in HD IIRC..

Thanks, do these come in a zip file or do you have to dl them one at a time?

mrcheapskate said: Anyone know how to get itunes to recognize track names and/or download in bulk?I don't see any way to download these in bulk unfortunately. But once you get them all into iTunes, you can highlight all the tracks, go to the Advanced menu, and select Get CD Track Names. That will use the web service to attempt to identify all the tracks. May not work for obscure things like this, though.

Thanks OP!!

565 Toccata and Fugue in D Minor FTW

haha.. good one, Mike. I second that... my organ needs it's annual pipe cleaning...

Praise God. I'm German Lutheran and I am a big fan of JS Bach's.

Green for OP cuz I've always preferred tulips on an organ instead of roses on a piano.

What is the best process to download the music.
What browser is everyone using.

Also 1. Praeludium 2. Fuga

That means there are two songs in link ?

How many hours / space is all the available music?

I'm finding reading
Venue 1755 Gottfried Silbermann/Zacharias Hildebrandt organ, Kathedrale, Dresden, Germany
Registration Praeludium:
HW: Pr16, Pr8, Rfl8, Oct4, Qnt3, Oct2, Mix, Zim, Fgt16
Ped: Pr16, Oct8, Oct4, Mix, Pos16
Fuga:
HW: Pr8, Oct4, Oct2, Zim, OW/HW
OW: Pr8, Oct4, Oct2, Mix
Ped: Pr16, Oct8, Oct4, Mix, Pos16, Tr8

is a little out of my league, Should I be understanding something i'm not. Or be keeping track
I'd like to give my 100 yr old grandfather a "mixed tape" thanks for the input

Gone Chopin, Bach in a minuet.

First, I AM NOT A MUSICIAN. I don't much about music. I can sight read it for singing, that's about it. I just know what I like, and as a savage beast I am soothed by Bach. Lots of the posters above me (who actually know stuff) will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the above means prelude and fugue. A prelude is an introduction to what is about to be played, simpler and covering the basic tunes you will hear in the next thing. Like the overture to Star Wars where you hear Luke's theme and then later Leia's girly part then the Imperial march part. In the Fugue they take one theme and really mess with it and explore it in all different ways. The two go together with a lot of these Bach things, so go ahead and keep the order of these two the same on your collection, I think.

Yeah, you can see they are two different links by mousing over them.

TravisB said: How many hours / space is all the available music?

IDK. 216 cuts so far, if every one were 4 minutes that would be like 14 hours of music.

Most of that stuff is just for organ geeks. Pipe organs have many different ranks of pipes controlled by registers and stops and who knows what all. If you wanted to sound just like this guy, you'd go to school for 84658465 years and then pull all the same stops he lists above, assuming you had the same kind of fancy organ. So forget this stuff.

If you're shooting for a real mixed tape, you might want to avoid a lot of cuts that have the same German or Latin title, but are just in a different key. Or maybe you wouldn't, your grandfather might enjoy listening to "sheep may safely graze" played in 8 different ways.

Hope this helps and I hope I haven't bastardized music theory too much!

any easier way to download all at one time?
thanks OP

This is so cool! He is the organ instructor at my alma mater--go blue!

Ditto. Anyone?

Probably the best approach is to go Baroque!
