Betamax has yet again launched a new VOIP service and adds more variety to their existing VOIP offering. The good part of this new VOIP service ActionVOIP is of course the best and most cheapest calling rates to India.
Regarding the voice quality, Betamax voice quality has always been good (I have never experienced problems regarding voice quality offered by ActionVoip).

You can make either PC to Phone calls using ActionVoip. You can also use Actionvoip from local access number in your country, however currently the local access number dialing facility is available in a few countries mostly european countries only.Just download their Voip application (softphone). You can also use your SIP phone/SIP settings in your Mobile for making voip phone calls.

SIP settings of ActionVoip.

SIP port : 5060
Registrar : sip.actionvoip.com
Proxy server : sip.actionvoip.com
Outbound proxy server : leave empty
Account name : your Actionvoip username
Password : your Actionvoip password
Display name/number : your Actionvoip username or voipnumber
Stunserver (option) : stun.actionvoip.com
Actionvoip

Moderator Comment: Due to unwelcome comments about calling to India, this thread is now under moderation. — Apr. 13, 2009 @ 10:22am

actually 0.7 cents

Also people who have Lingo or Vonage with UK free calling, you can use their UK access number to call India anytime without PC or sip device for same rate of 1 c/min india mobile. Cheers!!! Check their site for access number in UK or Germany.

EDIT: US local access number has been added by Action VOIP.

Those who want to just create a login/username to use with the above (i.e call an access number) and don't need to install software use the MAC/Unix link, it will let you create a username without needing you to install software. Thanks to slickms for the tip!

What if the call terminates on a non-local PSTN/mobile network?

BTW did anyone register? I'd like to see what is the minimum credit that you have to buy...

Looks like Euro10. Similar to Skype's minimum credit. They accept paypal. I am about to pull the trigger. If it works (reviews seem ok, but lets see), my cost per minute to India will fall by 70% (from 3 cents to a cent). Nice!

Looks like a good deal. I can configure my Linksys Pap2 with this and get a decent rate.

i have been using FREECALL from BETAMAX.
FRECALL has been charging 2 cents per minute to landline.
i never had any problem,
I think i am going to use actionvoip too.

More fun part with frecall is calls to any number in usa is free when you call through computer
We can buy credits through PAYPAL or any credit card.
I liked freecall.

The only drawback is you have to download their software.
However conisdering the cheap call rates relative to relliacne or airtel $0.05 is great.

Thanks for the post

Great rates. Thanks OP! Just signed up.
This is similar to voipwise or intervoip that I have used in the past, their rates are now about 3.9 cents per minute. This is 1.3 cents per minute or below, which is awesome! I think the only we have to watch out for the change in the rates. These sites change their rates constantly, and the only way you'll know is to check the rates on the site.

To another poster - this is a PC to Phone service, the other party does not need internet or pc. You can also use to phone to phone service, with another 5 cents connection fee per call.

You need to use +1 prefix with your phone number.

I use this site to find the cheapest BetaMax rates to any particular country:

http://backsla.sh/betamax

Seems the site has not yet added Actionvoip.com into the list though.

Been a regular user of Reliance/Airtel. Rather skeptical trying these new services out -- since they usually bad quality and/or some hidden costs/gotchas. Anyone has a tried and tested cheap calling service (to India) to recommend? Is AllVoip worth giving a shot?

No. Calling party has to have internet. If the receiving party also has internet, call would be free from a variety of sources e.g. Skype, Gizmo etc.

You can't get ahead if you don't take risk. Try some services for a low one-time cost and if you like it, continue with it. There are now dozens of good providers with rates around 3.5 cents per minute with promotions. Reliance has accumulated a large captive market in the US and has no incentive to lower rates on everybody to get a few additional subscribers (so they continue with their high rates). Other providers are trying to eat each other's cake and constantly lower their prices.

Is there any way I can try out a free call to local US numbers? The FAQ says that we can try out local numbers and we won't be charged. However, when I try out a local call, it says that I don't have enough credit. I tried with the prefix '001' and '1' for US numbers. Didn't work. I would really like to try out first before I charge up the minimum amount (10 EUR or 14.6 USD with tax on paypal). Please update if anyone is able to make a free test call without purchasing the minimum credit. Thanks
