WB is offering owners of SOME of it's HD-DVD movies the opportunity to "upgrade" to Blu-Ray for $4.95 plus the HD-DVD cover art. You can keep the box and disc!
I've bought a lot of $2-5 HD-DVDs since the format was dropped. This is a great opportunity to get Blu-Ray copies for not a lot of cash just to make yourself a bit more "future proofed," though that is a really impossible concept. Maybe my PS3 will get some movie action now.
The only downside is that not all WB movies are available... Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which was one of the HD-DVD giveaway titles, for example. Also there are a lot of crappy titles not worth the $5 upgrade.

I am not so sure how 0wn3d those HD-DVD disk thread crappers are since 99% of these WB coversion titles being offered are $14.99 or less on Blu-Ray anyway? Many sell for under $10ea with the frequent B1G1 on Amazon. By the time you pay the $4.95 per title + $6.95+ S&H you might as well just have purchased the Blu-Ray titles without the trade-in offer. Perhaps WB just realized an excellent opportunity to take advantage of a group of naive comsumers with an already proven track record of making poor purchasing decisions.
Is the $6.95 S&H per movie, or for the entire order? If it's for the entire order then this really is a pretty hot deal. You are getting a back-up high-def movie in Blu-Ray for a very low cost.

I only see $6.95 per order not disk, so if you have several of these it may end up being another $1 to the price per disk. That's reasonable.
Does anyone know if I upgrade my Planet Earth for $10, will I get the US or UK (BBC) version? The picture shows the BBC logo, but I don't know if it means anything. I have the BBC version on HD-DVD and don't want to end up with the Sigourney Weaver US edition.

A: Flat fee shipping and handling is $6.95 on your entire order shipped within the Continental US. The fee is $8.95 in Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico.

Might well be worth while to buy some of the cheap HD-DVDs now at Inetvideo (as low as $1.99) and get the BD version for the extra $4.95. If there's enough that interests you, you could really build a quick collection on the cheap.

According to the site, all you'd have to send them is case for the first movie in the boxset, not the movies or the cases for any others.
I believe it should be the sleeve of EACH disc in the boxset.
Thanks OP.

Has it gotten so bad that WB has to ask for money from HDDVD people because no one is buying Blu-ray ? Why would I give WB money for the same hd movies I got during the HDDVD fire sales for pennies?! My HDDVD collection and players are working just fine.
Seems like a hot deal since you may be able to sell the HD-DVD disc for a couple bucks. It may be a ploy to try and artificially increase the perceived revenue from producing a movie with WB (extra BluRay sales = additional revenue for old movies).
shingletingle said: Ummm...it's not an upgrade. It's an exchange. Except you get to keep the HD DVD disc, you just send in the cover. So ending up with both the HD DVD and Blu-Ray discs sounds like an upgrade to me.
Just do your diligence and check to see the differences between the HD DVD and Blu-ray. Sometimes, that PQ/AQ/Extras are better on one version v. the other. And it goes both ways.
Happy Feet - HD DVD has Dolby True HD...Blu-ray has lossy DD. Harry Potter 4 and 300 have PiP features on HD DVD that are not found on the Blu-ray. Perfect Storm has better PQ on the Blu-ray than the HD DVD. Casablanca MAY come as the CE which has an extra Doc. on Blu I Am Legend has more extras on Blu Matrix has an extra feature in HD on Blu

Apparently you don't know the story: at the end of the book, the character turns out to like green eggs and ham. All you're really indicating is that you're closed minded about bluray and that we can one day expect you to make a complete reversal on your position, which, frankly, seems likely anyhow.
To the deal: Thanks. I might take advantage of this. I think about half of my hddvd's are from Warner Bros anyway. =) I'll need to remember to make scans of the covers so that I can put them back in once I send the originals to WB. Hopefully Universal does a similar thing soon.
Most people miss the point. If you are already have HD-DVD and HD player, this program has minimal value.
To exploit this program, if you have blu ray player and want to get some blu ray disc. Find cheap version of the HD DVD and exchange it with this program.
What's the difference in cover art for the Harry Potter first disc in the set and regular first disc? UPC missing or something? I find it odd they'd do something like that.
MilanoOrange said: Most people miss the point. If you are already have HD-DVD and HD player, this program has minimal value. It has value in the sense that HD DVD owners have or will migrate to BD, and this is a cheap way to "side-grade" part of your collection to a format that will be around for years to come. You'll be able to lend out the discs to friends, or take them over to their house to watch, without them looking at you sadly and shaking their head that no, they don't own that defunct format. You'll be able to play the discs on the new players you'll eventually buy for other rooms in your house.
Also, not everyone wants both an HD DVD and BD player hooked up to their TV. If every studio offered this for every HD DVD title, you could upgrade your entire HD DVD collection, use solely a BD player in the main room, and move the HD DVDs to another room. Or, sell off your HD DVD collection and player cheap, making up the cost of this upgrade promotion.
Slikkster said: Now if I could only exchange my HD-DVD player for $4.95... You'll have to wait for Toshiba to cave in and start making BD players so that they'd have something to exchange it for.

Good question. If someone finds out from customer service please let us know.

Now if you plan to sell the Blu-ray...it's a different story.

Discovery produces and distributes the "US" version of the series, which has a big "Discovery" logo on the front instead of "BBC".
