Benefit of cloud is no load on your processor; better than the rest in this regard.

visit the blog link on the homepage for the faqs

no 64-bit yet

Note that this product is currently a public beta, but the final edition will be free as well.

Green to OP for the heads up. Still a beta version? Promising, but I think I'll wait...for now.

doesn't work with windows 7

Thanks for all the red I was just giving this as an FYI...not saying this was a bad deal as I'm all about the cloud..and free is always good.... just letting people know that this doesn't work on windows 7.

I don't get it. The CPU cycles will be spent on the cloud, but then the files need to be uploaded up to the cloud?

hashes are sent to the cloud for processing

xp sp2 fine for a month now

thanks for greens all

Windows 7 is not even GA yet. It doesn't work with MacOS XI either.

Not working on my Texas Instruments TI-99/4A.
But being beta, this may be resolved later...thx op.

How does this compare against
NOD32?

What's the catch? There is ALWAYS a catch. Well there is most of the time.

I suppose you have to be online all the time and all websites and data you receive have to go throw the "cloud".. might slow down the internet experience

Nod32 is not free

No direct comparisons have been made.

However, this extensive review gives Panda Cloud a score of 85 percent:
http://www.thetechherald.com/article.php/200918/3565/Review-Pand...

Note that on the final page, they mention the score could've been as high as 99.44 percent, depending on how you count its effectiveness.

For comparison, on the same site they gave ESET 3.0 a score of 89.22 out of 100, although it looks like a different scoring system was used:

The program has an "offline" mode where it scans files and checks against a cached database. Also, when online, only the hashes of files on your PC are sent to the cloud, so it should have a low bandwidth overhead.

What happens if you get a virus from a flash drive or bad cd your kids put into the computer? Will it identify it and stop it from loading? Will it get rid of stuff that manages to get onto your computer?

I'm just trying to learn more about this program.

Good questions, as this could be a great little program for those folks who purchased netbooks with small SSD drives. I mean the purpose of those machines is to stay connected most of the time, and for the machines with less memory and small drives this could be their answer to solid A/V.

Watch the video. It sure didn't catch some major ones.

When it detects and cleans the infection after it has already been installed, that's a failure. The malware should never be able to install anything to begin with. They were very lenient in this review.

The blog on the Panda Cloud AV site has a lot of technical info on how it works:
http://blog.cloudantivirus.com/

Basically, plugging in a USB or inserting a CD/DVD won't cause PCAV to automatically scan all the files on that external storage. However, if any files attempt to run or are accessed, PCAV will immediately scan the file before allowing it to run/open. There's also a background scan run during your PC's idle times, so it should eventually scan all files on your PC.

As for a netbook with internal SSD, that shouldn't be treated any differently than an internal HD.

Other than the fact that most sold for netbooks are either 8GB or 16GB and a big commercial A/V package would tend to eat up a good bit of that storage. Having an A/V solution where most of the program is located off the netbook would be a good thing.

When it detects and cleans the infection after it has already been installed, that's a failure. The malware should never be able to install anything to begin with. They were very lenient in this review.

Thew review points out that it detected 88 out of 89 files they copied onto on the system (98.87%), and 5 out of 7 files the two websites they visited tried to load (71.4%), averaging to 85%. However, if you totaled all the files together, PCAV detected 93 of 96 files, or 92%.

Note that the review of ESET showed that it also failed to stop at least one site from loading malware onto their test PC. No AV solution is going to catch 100% of potential infections.

What's notable about PCAV is that once the 2 files the one website successfully installed were detected via a scan, the software was able to stop the installations on a re-visit to the site. This means only one PCAV user has to be infected before all other PCAV users become almost instantly protected, compared to other AV solutions where users have to wait for the AV company to create and then send an update to their client.

As more people install and use PCAV, its detection rate will improve.

marsilies said: As more people install and use PCAV, its detection rate will improve.Theoretically. I wonder how easy it would be to send some false positives to the cloud to make common applications stop working. Additionally, I point you back to the http://remove-malware.com/ video. 40% interception for their tests was waaaay too low. I'm willing to take some bloat to stay away from this software. It's a great concept, but not trustworthy for production use yet.

Bottled Cloud water!

Lack of 64-bit version kills it for me. Also probably a big part of why it is a giveaway.

From their blog:

Why isn’t there a 64bit and Windows7 version?

Basically we wanted to get Cloud Antivirus out there and tested as soon as possible to validate the new philosophy and protection model. Supporting additional configurations was less of a priority than seeing if the model is truly valid or not. However we’re seeing that by popular demand this is the #1 request we’re getting so we’ll re-think our priorities and try to release these builds as soon as possible.

how long will this software stay free?

As the 2nd comment on this thread pointed out, the product will continue to be free after it exits beta.

It's mentioned in the FAQ on their blog:
http://blog.cloudantivirus.com/2009/05/04/frequently-asked-quest...

Will this work along side another Antivirus software installed on PC or will it clash?

From the FAQ, linked to directly above your post:

Can I run Cloud Antivirus alongside my Norton360/AVG/Etc.?

No you can’t, just as you can’t (or shouldn’t) run two or more different antivirus programs at the same time. The Cloud Antivirus installer identifies a large number of AV programs and will stop the installation if it detects one running. However there are reports of some users that have been able to install Cloud Antivirus running at the same time as lesser known AV programs such as Spyware Doctor Antivirus. In these cases you might experience slowness or slugginesh of the Operating System. To resolve this issue simply uninstall one of the two AV programs.

Cool, I'll check out your software in the fall when it will actually run on my 64-Bit OS.
