I have 2 of these that I bought about a year ago. When fully charged they almost have enough power to cut through plastic clamshell packaging but they seem to always need charging. They are never fully charged when you need them.
My mom got one of these on clearance a while back. Unless you do a lot of sewing and need to cut a lot of fabric or tarp, they're pretty useless for everyday use.
They are Piece-O-Carp in my personal opinion. Target had them for $10 in clearance a while back. I purchased one and returned the next day. Fully charged, it could not cut even the package it came out of. What a joke.
I guess it's YMMV. I got 'em for $5 or so @ Lowes last year and they're pretty decent. Used to cut open 40 plastic sacks of wood chips. Nomad's *maybe* right - they can't cut from the edge through 2 layers of clear hard plastic packaging - but they can cut through a single layer of the stuff (what you'd normally do w/ a folding knife, for example) fine after starting a pilot slit. I think they're worth owning. They're not quite the gimmick they seem. Not the sharpest tool in the drawer, sure, but still worth owning.
i got one for $5 from Target clearance some months ago. Charged it up, let it sit about a couple of months and it still easily cut through several expired credit cards (one at a time).
