Finally found a converter that seems worth spending my coupons on, and even from a reputable seller to boot!

http://www.amazon.com/Zinwell-ZAT-970A-Digital-Analog-Converter/dp/B001DVZXC0

Consumer Reports' review found that this box is among the best in terms of image quality:
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/electronics-computers/tvs-services/digital-tv-converter/ratings/dtv-converter-boxes-ratings.htm

One nice feature is that you can add channels without doing a complete rescan, and there is a signal strength meter.

The Blogspot blog that reviews DTV converters also said this is one of the best:
http://dtvconverterboxes.blogspot.com/2008/09/zinwell-zat-970a-analog-digital-tv.html

One downside is that it doesn't have S-Video, but none of the reasonably priced ones have that for some reason. Another is that the program guide isn't the best.

Best of all about this box, it's absolutely free, including free shipping after coupon!

I can't understand what all these sellers are thinking pricing their boxes just above $40, the free after coupon places must be selling a 100x more boxes than the ones selling for $42.

If nothing else, can be a free shipping item qualifier.

Product Features per the manufactor's website:
· Terrestrial 8-VSB demodulation
· ATSC 18 video formats decoding
· ATSC HDTV complaint MPEG2 MP@ML/ MP@HL decoder
· Compatible with HDTV, EDTV and SDTV displays

· ATSC AC3 audio decoding
· Modern design with user-friendly OSD interface.
· Aspect Ratio 16:9/ 4:3
· Multilingual support
· Automatic and manual channel scan
· Closed Caption, V-Chip and EAS (Emergency Alert System) Support

Actually, the most notable feature of the 970A is its timer ability. Too bad the user-experience for these boxes is poor in my opinion.

getting one CM7000 and will try this one out too... thanks

I have the CM7000 hooked up via SVideo, and it looks great. Program guide is not great, and the best I could find if for was ~57 - 40 coupon = $17. But I think it was worth it.

I was able to receive two CM7000 from Solid Signal for $24 shipped AC ordering them both at the same time in 2008 and two for $18 shipped AC in 2009. The price does fluctuate there.

Barring flood or fire, all done buying these at any price.

RIP

Awesome deal. I am in for 1.

Its too bad I only had one coupon left.

Thanks, OP. N41.

in42.thx.

another website offers free TV antenna with the free airlink101 boxes. FW thread

This may seem to be a stupid question, but if I get one of these boxes, can I then connect it to a flat screen monitor and watch TV with it?

No.

If your monitor has AV input like many large LCD monitor has now, then yes. or you need a converter to converter av to VGA.

I have this product, and I'm happy with it. It *does* have program timers, but they have a few bugs in them. I would recommend to others.

how do you checkout with the coupon at Amazon? any hints? it's asking me to enter credit card info.

It's free and yet the "entitled" overtones. Sad.

Be careful because on other websites where they're supposed to be free after DTV coupon, when they ask for a CC it usually meant that the coupon was invalid and/or rejected. My second "active" and "valid" coupon proved to be rejected at a B+M store.

On the product page, look for the red coupon for "Save $40 on This TV Converter Box" and click "redeem it via our online form here". After entering the code, you can place an order and $40 should automatically apply to your order. If you choose free shipping, the total cost is shown as $0.

my 2 cents... I went with the Channel master 7000 Svideo out, makes watching SDTV .01% better then RCA. I also ordered from Soild State $18 to the door for two, after Coupons.

I just entered (at Amazon site) my coupon number (I received yesterday which was rejected as invalid.

Here is what the rejection email says:
"Thanks for submitting your Converter Box Coupon code for use on Amazon.com. Unfortunately, our attempt to validate the code you entered with the NTIA (National Telecommunications and Information Administration) agency who issued the coupon was unsuccessful."

I'm not sure what's sad about me or my tone.

These DTV converters aren't being given away free by the retailers or the manufacturers out of the goodness of their hearts. They're being paid for with our tax dollars. I don't see anything wrong as a taxpayer with expecting a quality device, or a reputable seller, especially when past deals have seen high levels of shady business.

However, I do have a problem with your entitled attitude, coming in here and talking trash to me for my tone, despite my sharing a deal with you and everyone on FW for for free. Sad.

I got the same thing. I got 2 coupons on Monday. I tried to use one at Amazon and it said it could not be validated. Does this mean if I take it to a B&M, they will deny it as well? I am afraid to try my other one. I really just need one I have tried entering the information 3 times...

Anyone else seen this? Seems like the B&M stores only have the sub-par boxes.

I ran into that problem as well. I thought I was lucky to come across this deal since my coupons were expiring Monday, only to find out the cards weren't validated by the Amazon system. Yes, I tried both cards several times in Firefox and IE and still no luck. Guess I'll be reapplying for coupons...just hope this price will be around when I finally get them.

By the way, do you guys that got rejected live in apartment complexes? I heard sometimes people have trouble with that since the units use the same address.

I live in a house - no address issue for me. Are there any other online stores that have decent units to try this at? Will these be usable at a B&M? Seems crazy they would send out something unusable. The government would never do that

If you don't mind spending some additional money for one and want to try the coupons at a B+M store, then buy a Zenith DTV box at K-Mart for $50 B/C, $10 A/C. It's considered one of the very best basic boxes (i.e. coupon eligible).

I have the Zenith DTT900 and the quality is just ok. Consumer Reports was correct in rating Zenith (in link in OP) as just 'Better' but not as Best.

is this better than the airlink 101?

So, is the "BEST" the Tivax?
Does anyone have any experience with it?
Thanks

I got DTT901, it has less problems than DTT900.

Zenith is good all around, from features to picture quality. It runs the coolest of all, you can put your hand on top of the box and you almost don't feel any hit. It can remember Pixel Aspect Ratio per channel bases, something most boxes can't do at all.

CM-7000 has S-Video input. I found the color on CM-7000 is the most vivid. So you can't go wrong with it either.

I live in an apartment complex, and didn't have any trouble using 2 coupons.

I have heard that sometimes there are issues with using the coupons when they get close to expiration, like around a week.

Hmm, if that's the case I guess I fall into that category. However I got in on the Artec deal (which I can't seem to find the thread to any longer) on the expiration day of my coupons and didn't have any problem redeeming both coupons like I did this time.

I have tried the Artec T3AP-LL and the Zenith DTT901. Both have their pros and cons but best overall I think goes to Zenith. Artec is good since it's FAC. I'm interested in the Zinwell solely because it's the more reliable in quality of the only 2 programmable converter boxes out there, according to the reviews.

I picked up a Zenith 901 tonight. Seems to be ok. I guess I will pick up another with my other coupon. The remote does not have a code for the GPX TV I have it on though, LOL.

I didn't think about it like that! Thanks!

I have two of the TIVAX STB-T9 boxes. They're great. Meritline had a two-pack for $17.99 shipped after fed coupons.

* I believe the picture ranks in the Best category at Consumer Reports.

* They have add scan. When I had an older different brand unit last year, I had to rescan every time I pointed the ant in an opposite direction.

* They have the signal strength, aspect, and volume control buttons on the remote instead of buried in the menu.

* Lots of vents on top. Runs very cool.

Get the STB-T8 if you require analog pass through.

oh.. i found the redemption link in the Amazon page.
sorry about the confusion.

BTW, is the external antenna a must?
