My birthday is coming up and I just got the reminder email that I get to go to Disneyland for free on my birthday. Knowing that the birthday offer can be upgraded to another ticket and being a SoCal resident, I was sad to find out that the 2Fer deal expired yesterday.
But they do have a new summer deal, which IMO is not as good but I guess it's better than nothing: linky

So I did the math to see if it would be a benefit to get this first, before an annual pass. It is the same cost as if you were to just use your birthday upgrade and buy the Southern California Select annual passport except that you get 3 days of unblocked access during the summer. Pretty good if you are on a budget and 3 days during the summer is enough for you. I personally wouldn't get that Select passport, since it blocks out ALL weekends and the whole summer.

I personally wouldn't go to Disneyland, if I can avoid it. The place has gone down hill for the last decade. No fun parking in that huge parking structure, walking to the tram, waiting for the tram, coughing up diesel fumes on the tram, getting off the tram and then having to walk thru downtown Disney Shopping district just to get to the line to wait in to get checked by security, then walking to the line to buy a ticket, and, once your in, the place has gone to sh!t. Overpriced crap. Then, once it's done, you have to take the reverse trip back to your car. They really screwed it up when they put Califonia Adventure in the parking lot.

With all due respect, the parking structure is a million times more efficient. Your car is kept cool in the shade, your walk is minimized, it is quicker to get in and out, and it is easier to remember where you parked. I think the parking structure is fantastic. I wish Magic Mountain would follow suit. Getting through 'security' is extremely easy, especially if you plan for it. If you go without children (which I do), you can literally walk right through. My female companions do not carry a purse and instead carry a small wallet. If you do this, then you are golden. If you are the type to bring strollers, large bags, drink bottles, etc.. then you will encounter a wait, but that is true of all theme parks. I do not recommend traveling heavy anyway for this very reason. Again, the return trip is a breeze. When your legs are tired, you get shuttled to an escalator -- what could be better? As for overpriced crap -- well, that has been true since 1955.
Thanks for finding an update to the 'free on your birthday' special, ChunkyBarf

anyway just wanted to share, for those of us who have summer birthdays.
Can anyone please share their experience purchasing these tix at a local grocery store? Has anyone ever been asked for ID when purchasing?? I'm taking my daughter to disneyland in a week so I am thankful for any feedback...

Seems kind of harsh, but I do agree about the diesel fumes part. Maybe Disney should consider a higher smoke stack or switching to CNG or something.

Yes, they do check ID, at least at Ralphs. However, they don't care about Southern Cal residency. I saw someone pull out their foreign passport, and the supervisor keyed in a code, and that was that...

In December, all 16 parking trams that carry guests from distant lots to the front gates, began running solely on compressed natural gas instead of diesel. Also, the five Disneyland Railroad trains that circle a one-mile perimeter of the park began running on cleaner burning biodiesel made with oil that comes from the resort’s restaurants and hotels.
I'm in line for Space Mountain right now. This definitely is a good deal IF you want to go only 3 days this summer, but keep in mind parking is $12 per car (I think a yearly parking pass is $60).
I have a Premium pass so parking is free every time (and the gf has it as well, so we can get 2 cars in for free every day), and I was able to buy used park hoppers to get $125 off ($195 face value - $70 paid for each) passports for 3 of my friends, and we've been having a(n astro) blast.
ALWAYS BRING YOUR OWN FOOD. Bottled cokes are $2.75, so I stock up at Costco where they are $.75 and bring in 6 in my backpack. Combined with kirkland signature snacks, it makes disneyland dining a luxury that I don't have to worry about. Even this morning I stopped at AMPM and got 2 BIG chicken sandwiches for $2.50, then made a right and was at the parking structure. Seriously, with a little legwork you can have a true FW time in the magic kingdom.
And yes, the trams are compressed natural gas, and the parking situation is incredibly swift and convenient- I don't get the people hating on that.
Gtg, I'm about to board for my intergalactic journey.

It's fine to complain but at least be factual. Obviously you haven't been to DL in a while because alot of the things you complain about don't even exist... I guess some people insist on showing their ignorance.
We love disney! There are annoyances, but hey, sit back, relax and just go with it. Life is to short to pick apart every little thing! We also bring in snacks. One time we had pizza delivered. While the kids and hubby were in line for a ride, I walked across the street to IHOP to meet the pizza boy. Then, after they were done on the ride, we met at the picnic area and ate. It was a whole lot cheaper than buying food in the park!

How do you use the used park hoppers to get $125 off? You can apply them toward a season pass? Thanks!

You get the face value of the ticket applied toward the passport. Make sure there's one day left on the ticket. I recommend meeting up with someone on craigslist and getting their information in case they're trying to scam you (ask for a driver's license and if they hesitate find someone else). Have them write down what days the ticket was used, since the cashier will likely ask and the ticket is supposed to be upgraded only by the person who used it originally. Make sure the back of the ticket is not signed- if it's signed, the ticket can only be used by the person who signed it.
I bought 3 used 6-day park hopper tickets off a guy who came from Vegas. I made sure the ticket was still valid (it says the date it's valid until on the back), checked the face value ($194), made sure it wasn't signed, and he wrote down the dates they were used for me on an index card (which my friends memorized in case they asked). I wrote down his name and address, and had his phone number from craigslist. I also memorized his DL number just in case, but didn't write that down in front of him. I went to the ticket booth with my friends, and they upgraded all 3 without incident. The passports are supposed to be pre-dated to the day the parkhopper ticket was first used, but 1 of my friends got lucky and it wasn't.
So the Vegas guy got $210 back by selling us the last day of his tickets, and my friends got $582 off the price of their passports (net savings of $372 [$124 each] after the cost of buying the tickets). It was a huge win-win for the seller and us.
You have to upgrade to a passport that is more than the face value of the ticket(for my friends that meant getting the Deluxe passes), so they paid $145 for their deluxe passports (regularly $269) which includes 315 days (most blockout days are only Saturdays and major holidays).
Like I said, this is a good deal only if you want to go 3 days. Otherwise, upgrading from someone else's ticket is the way to go.
Edit:
Check the OC section craigslist either "Disneyland used" or "Disneyland Upgrade" or "Disneyland value" and you should be able to find a few that will get you $120 off.
Does anyone know if they check your ID when entering the park? I was thinking about having my inlaws(they live in SOCAL) buy them and then have the family use them????
I just wasn't sure if we would be asked for ID's after we have the tickets?
Yeah, I agree with Barf Simpson. I personally carry a "Road Soda" of Bacardi and Coke to kill the time.
