My birthday is coming up and I just got the reminder email that I get to go to Disneyland for free on my birthday. Knowing that the birthday offer can be upgraded to another ticket and being a SoCal resident, I was sad to find out that the 2Fer deal expired yesterday.
But they do have a new summer deal, which IMO is not as good but I guess it's better than nothing: linky
Here are the details:
3 Days of Summer Fun for $33 a Day! Save this summer when you buy the Summer Fun Pass! Available for a limited time only to Southern California residents, the Pass lets you into both Disneyland® Park and Disney's California Adventure® Park for three days for $99. And for just $35 more, you can upgrade your Summer Fun Pass to an Annual Pass!
Get two great offers* in one! Buy a Summer Fun Pass for $99 and enjoy both Disneyland® Park and Disney's California Adventure® Park for three days. And at any time during those three days, you can take your pass to the Ticket Booth and upgrade it to an Annual Pass for just $35.
Do more in the Parks for less!
* Thrill to the musical spectacular of Fantasmic! * Revel in the stunning pyrotechnics of "Remember...Dreams Come True" Fireworks * Delight in the dazzling display of Disney's Electrical Parade * Shoot 'em up on the range at Toy Story Mania!

So I did the math to see if it would be a benefit to get this first, before an annual pass. It is the same cost as if you were to just use your birthday upgrade and buy the Southern California Select annual passport except that you get 3 days of unblocked access during the summer. Pretty good if you are on a budget and 3 days during the summer is enough for you. I personally wouldn't get that Select passport, since it blocks out ALL weekends and the whole summer.

I personally wouldn't go to Disneyland, if I can avoid it. The place has gone down hill for the last decade. No fun parking in that huge parking structure, walking to the tram, waiting for the tram, coughing up diesel fumes on the tram, getting off the tram and then having to walk thru downtown Disney Shopping district just to get to the line to wait in to get checked by security, then walking to the line to buy a ticket, and, once your in, the place has gone to sh!t. Overpriced crap. Then, once it's done, you have to take the reverse trip back to your car. They really screwed it up when they put Califonia Adventure in the parking lot.

With all due respect, the parking structure is a million times more efficient. Your car is kept cool in the shade, your walk is minimized, it is quicker to get in and out, and it is easier to remember where you parked. I think the parking structure is fantastic. I wish Magic Mountain would follow suit. Getting through 'security' is extremely easy, especially if you plan for it. If you go without children (which I do), you can literally walk right through. My female companions do not carry a purse and instead carry a small wallet. If you do this, then you are golden. If you are the type to bring strollers, large bags, drink bottles, etc.. then you will encounter a wait, but that is true of all theme parks. I do not recommend traveling heavy anyway for this very reason. Again, the return trip is a breeze. When your legs are tired, you get shuttled to an escalator -- what could be better? As for overpriced crap -- well, that has been true since 1955.
Thanks for finding an update to the 'free on your birthday' special, ChunkyBarf

anyway just wanted to share, for those of us who have summer birthdays.

Can anyone please share their experience purchasing these tix at a local grocery store? Has anyone ever been asked for ID when purchasing?? I'm taking my daughter to disneyland in a week so I am thankful for any feedback...

Seems kind of harsh, but I do agree about the diesel fumes part. Maybe Disney should consider a higher smoke stack or switching to CNG or something.

Yes, they do check ID, at least at Ralphs. However, they don't care about Southern Cal residency. I saw someone pull out their foreign passport, and the supervisor keyed in a code, and that was that...

In December, all 16 parking trams that carry guests from distant lots to the front gates, began running solely on compressed natural gas instead of diesel. Also, the five Disneyland Railroad trains that circle a one-mile perimeter of the park began running on cleaner burning biodiesel made with oil that comes from the resort’s restaurants and hotels.
I'm in line for Space Mountain right now. This definitely is a good deal IF you want to go only 3 days this summer, but keep in mind parking is $12 per car (I think a yearly parking pass is $60).
I have a Premium pass so parking is free every time (and the gf has it as well, so we can get 2 cars in for free every day), and I was able to buy used park hoppers to get $125 off ($195 face value - $70 paid for each) passports for 3 of my friends, and we've been having a(n astro) blast.
ALWAYS BRING YOUR OWN FOOD. Bottled cokes are $2.75, so I stock up at Costco where they are $.75 and bring in 6 in my backpack. Combined with kirkland signature snacks, it makes disneyland dining a luxury that I don't have to worry about. Even this morning I stopped at AMPM and got 2 BIG chicken sandwiches for $2.50, then made a right and was at the parking structure. Seriously, with a little legwork you can have a true FW time in the magic kingdom.
And yes, the trams are compressed natural gas, and the parking situation is incredibly swift and convenient- I don't get the people hating on that.
Gtg, I'm about to board for my intergalactic journey.

It's fine to complain but at least be factual. Obviously you haven't been to DL in a while because alot of the things you complain about don't even exist... I guess some people insist on showing their ignorance.

We love disney! There are annoyances, but hey, sit back, relax and just go with it. Life is to short to pick apart every little thing! We also bring in snacks. One time we had pizza delivered. While the kids and hubby were in line for a ride, I walked across the street to IHOP to meet the pizza boy. Then, after they were done on the ride, we met at the picnic area and ate. It was a whole lot cheaper than buying food in the park!

How do you use the used park hoppers to get $125 off? You can apply them toward a season pass? Thanks!

You get the face value of the ticket applied toward the passport. Make sure there's one day left on the ticket. I recommend meeting up with someone on craigslist and getting their information in case they're trying to scam you (ask for a driver's license and if they hesitate find someone else). Have them write down what days the ticket was used, since the cashier will likely ask and the ticket is supposed to be upgraded only by the person who used it originally. Make sure the back of the ticket is not signed- if it's signed, the ticket can only be used by the person who signed it.
I bought 3 used 6-day park hopper tickets off a guy who came from Vegas. I made sure the ticket was still valid (it says the date it's valid until on the back), checked the face value ($194), made sure it wasn't signed, and he wrote down the dates they were used for me on an index card (which my friends memorized in case they asked). I wrote down his name and address, and had his phone number from craigslist. I also memorized his DL number just in case, but didn't write that down in front of him. I went to the ticket booth with my friends, and they upgraded all 3 without incident. The passports are supposed to be pre-dated to the day the parkhopper ticket was first used, but 1 of my friends got lucky and it wasn't.
So the Vegas guy got $210 back by selling us the last day of his tickets, and my friends got $582 off the price of their passports (net savings of $372 [$124 each] after the cost of buying the tickets). It was a huge win-win for the seller and us.
You have to upgrade to a passport that is more than the face value of the ticket(for my friends that meant getting the Deluxe passes), so they paid $145 for their deluxe passports (regularly $269) which includes 315 days (most blockout days are only Saturdays and major holidays).
Like I said, this is a good deal only if you want to go 3 days. Otherwise, upgrading from someone else's ticket is the way to go.
Edit:
Check the OC section craigslist either "Disneyland used" or "Disneyland Upgrade" or "Disneyland value" and you should be able to find a few that will get you $120 off.

Mahalo in advance.
They didn't check our ID's.
We took advantage of the deal last year. Brother in law bought the tickets and our family enjoyed two days and sold the remaining day on eBay for about $275 for the four tickets.
The way I see it, Disney gets the money for the tickets and a family in the park to spend more money on higher profit margin items like food and t-shirts and other Disney trinkets.
My advice is to go in the morning when they have to process a bunch of people. Of course YMMV.
Good luck!

Sounds awesome... Thanks Hamsterman. I was given these tickets as a gift for my DD's birthday... My last question, thank you in advance to all that respond, is am i going to be asked to show ID at the turnstiles?? or should this not be a problem... Also will she be eligible for the birthday fun card?
In regards to bringing in food...you know some parks dont like that since they want you to buy their own food...however...there is one law that allows you to bring special food if its for dietary or religious reasons. They also cant stop water bottles..but they can stop soda...(no cans too...you probably can use deju blue water bottles and fill them with lemon lime soda..
If you have hypertension..for example..all the food in the park is loaded with salt..so the reason why they cant force you to eat their food..and you get sick...
If you read at most parks..they say no outside food..but in fine print..it allows for dietary food or baby food..
Best time to go to disneyland is Sunday Morning...the first 3 hours you can go on the great rides before it gets packed.
since I am a local..it use to be in February....the park was empty..but nowadays..its crowded all the time..and summer time...forget it.
another good time to go is when it rains...they do run bobsleds...and its great. Also last week in August...most schools start back east at that time.

Posting my experience. I purchased 3 of these park hopper tickets for the three days I was going to Disneyland. They did not ask for ID at the check out nor when I was going into the park on the days which I used it.
how bad are lines summer weekends? or... could i sell this pass for ppl who want to upgrade to season pass? i don't want to take another day off work to go, so what would be my best option? are saturdays or sundays better?
one thing i noticed - when i went on my birthday to upgrade my free ticket to this, they gave me this pass, but nowhere did it say i had to use it that day. so i could have just left and then come back for 3 more days. so for those of you who have bdays on weekdays, have to work, and live in the area, theoretically you can come by and upgrade your free bday ticket to this for 3 days for $33. not as good as the 2fer, but still, can't help it if your bday is in the summer!

Hamsterman It should be obvious from your comment, but does that mean Ralphs sells these SoCal tickets? I'm in NorCal and am planning on visiting Disney in August. So, if some grocery stores sell these tickets I can certainly buy those and I have CA ID so it might be OK. Any suggestions?

Wickeywouse, I read your email about the So Cal passes to Disneyland for your daughter. I'm taking my family next week and would love to know how it worked out for you.
Did they check for ID at Ralphs or the groc store you used? Did they check for ID at Disneyland when you turned the voucher into a ticket? Did they check for ID at the gate?
We decided to give this a go, and we just went to the closest grocery store to Disneyland, it was a Von's and they were completely sold out of 3 day hopper cards. So I asked my GPS for a grocery stores and found a Ralph's that was 2 miles away and we drove there. (I hadn't read this thread on Ralph's checking ID's). They had 3 day passes there and I bought 3 at the self-checkout. The checkout clerk did ask for ID, and I handed him my ID which was for Northern California, and he came back and activated the cards. Note, on my receipt, only two cards came out as "activated", the third said "activated within 24 hours" (we think the modem may have gone down at the store during that one's activation).
Anyway the gift card comes with a top tab. We broke off the top tabs, and went into Disneyland, there's no voucher, the gift card is your ticket. We presented the gift cards at the gate, no check for ID. The two that were activated worked fine. But since we had purchased the cards only a few minutes earlier the third card did not work. But after a walk to guest relations (during that time the card activated), they told us it was active, and we went back and went through. No problems. Never asked for ID at the gate.
Key here, Buy early to prevent the activation issue to prevent yourself some hassle and buy at grocery store farther from Disneyland.
I should also note, if you do this, be prepared to pay the difference $85 per ticket if you do get asked for ID and you don't have Southern California ID ....
What's a Southern Californai ID? If I have a CA driver's license, issued in Nor Cal, does the SoCal DMV issue a different license?
When you change address the DMV does not give you a new DL immediately, only on next renew. So, I guess as long as you have a CA DL it should be OK and you can say you just moved a few months back..
Right ??

It specifically says zip codes 90000-93999 for So Cal, if you don't have a DL that shows it they ask for a power bill, water bill, lease, etc.

Except for the first post - this thread is not talking much about the offer. Can you buy this pass AT THE GATE ? Disney site says online, Disney resort box office, Disney stores, and Ralphs, Vons, Food 4 Less, etc. Someone else I know insists you can get it at the gate. How would you upgrade your free birth-day by paying extra and upgrading to 3-day pass unless they offer it at the gate ? And has ANYONE been carded AT THE ENTRANCE asking to see your driver's license to match the So Cal offer. It seems buying it at grocery is best way to skirt any non-So Cal residents a So Cal resident is buying it for. I saw somewhere else that you can buy up to 4 non-So Cal residents who accompany you this pass - but it doesn't say this on Disney site of course. Anyone care to share some expertise on this ? Thanks so much ! BradInCA
My experience. Bought 3 tickets at Vons (Chapman Ave., Garden Grove), which seems like a real ghetto grocery store from what I could tell. The girl at the counter was too rude and busy (they had 3 counters open with each having at least 10-15 people in line) to ask for ID. So, no ID asked, SoCal or otherwise. They had tons of these gift cards. They even had a deal, I believe till 8/8, where if you buy 3 of these you get a coupon of $10 off for next purchase. We got the coupon but never went back, so never used it. At the Disney gate, same thing, everyone is too busy to ask for any ID. They just scan those and off you go. So, I'll say if you want a 3 day park hopper just give it a shot, I don't think you will run into trouble, but as lawyers would advise do it at your own risk and don't sue me if it doesn't work for you (i.e. YMMV). As far as other stuff, B'day etc. is concerned, don't know since I didn't care checking.

BradInCA
i went on my birthday and upgraded to this pass. so yes, you can buy it at the gate. they did check for id when i bought it (but i'm not sure if they were checking for socal or for birthday). but i think you can assume if you buy this pass at the gate they will ask for id. but they won't ask for id when you actually use it for entrance. i have never seen it happen, and i think it's because there are just so many different types of tickets out there that it would seriously slow down the entrance lines if they looked at each one and asked for ID for the ones that require it.
i used up my 3 days (grudgingly... i think 2 days was enough disney for me..) and they never asked once at the gate.
oh one thing to note, make sure you get your hand stamped if you plan to return to either park. they will still ask you for your ticket (hand stamp alone is not enough), but their system will beep if you've already used your ticket earlier that day, so you'll have to show them your hand stamp as proof.
