I'd spend the extra $3,000 to get the model with A/C.....try driving around the whole summer in most of the U.S. without it.... most people would rather be buried in sand to their neck and attacked by ants.
Renault owns/partners/shares a lot with nissan these days. If you've ever seen Renaults from the last 10 or 20 years, you know they have some of the ugliest cars ever built...

good for northern states without a/c?? No way, Jose.

It is an awesome price for some basic transportation. While the design might not be the prettiest, it is an extremely practical layout with lots of room. It reminds me of the early Civics. The design is likely the shape of things to come. With the push to fuel efficient vehicles, this is likely our future. I can give up the power options and A/C could probably be added, but safety in a small car is a concern for me. I would want ABS.

good for northern states without a/c?? No way, Jose.Washington State is northern, but Easter WA experiences summer temps frequently in triple digits, so no thanks. I drove without A/C for 10 years in the area, and while I may now be feminized, I won't have to change out of sweaty clothing after ARRIVING at my destination. Maybe on the coast, or AK, but not in my portion of the "northern states".
It's a great value due to $3,000 rebate and dealer incentives. MSRP about $18,000.
I've driven this car and it easily compares to the $18,000 Corolla which offers less....but, we won't talk about resale after 5 yrs.
Why not just buy a used car instead? You could probably get the same Kia (1 or 2 years old) for less than $8K, or a similarly-equipped used Toyota or Nissan for the same price.
this car is actually pretty highly rated especially for its interior layout and materials, i actually find it pretty cute, wish it were available here, not the best reliability but for about 1/2 price of a corolla, it's a great deal

That's more than I paid to put central A/C in my house!
For $8k it's a cute econobox. For $11k there's other options.
yeah I been wanting one ever since I watched Heroes, blue neesan veersa!!!
I think the hatch is way better looking tho, and more practical cause it's like a Honda Fit/Toyota Yaris w/o all the bs hype about a freaking SIMPLE point A to point B vehicle. of course this is too simple, lack of a/c kinda sucks but like the other guy said, put the tornado 735 on the dash and you're good to go.
my friend just bought a honda fit for 18k, totally not worth it imo compared to this. no offense to honda fit owners here.
No A/C? No problem, keep the windows down and the fan on. Still too hot. Cough up the $1k for A/C to be installed at a later date, primarily during winter.
It might be a down to have ONLY a 5-speed, like 99% of the other manual transmissions, and I don't know the gear ratios for the two transmissions, but it is going to help improve MPGs.
Oh, the interior is seriously lacking goodies and style? Less to break down, easier to clean, easier to customize to your liking.
This is a great deal for someone needing a second car, but afraid of used, as there is no guarantee of condition and service diligence of the previous owners. If this car was available in Cali for this price, I would seriously consider buying it.
10 years ago, I bought a Chevy Metro very similar to this Versa, in that it was lacking A/C, 5-speed manual, no radio, etc. And while I have had a couple of real sweats during hot days, I have never regretted the purchase. This car is still going strong getting 40 mpg without even trying. And though it is a smaller engine, 1.3 liters, last night I was having a little canyon carving fun with a corvette.
I would think a 10 year newer car would have better technology, reliability, and performance.
Like other posters have inferred, don't whine about luxuries lacking from a super deal, grow a set and drive happy.
The price of gas is going up. You could probably buy the car, drive it for a year, and sell it for about what you paid.
Tempting deal for me, but ever since Ford said they'll make it on their own without assistance, they've earned my loyalty. Avoiding the political debate to this, I've had poor experiences with Kia and Nissan in the past, but my Mercury and Ford vehicles have done better from a longevity standpoint. This may be a good deal for some, but I question the value if it gives out as quickly as my past experiences.
PS: I rear-ended a Hyundai last year in my Mercury Cougar. $0 damage to me, over $2000 to him. He had stopped on a merging on-ramp. I turned around to see if it was clear to merge, and it was, so I put the gas on to merge onto the highway. The guy in front of me decided to stop after merging onto the highway. It was my fault because I should have turned back around after checking my blind spot, but that poor Hyundai fell apart!

This strikes me as a great beater car for kids. They aren't going to be going on any road trips without A/C, and since it's new they won't have to shell out for repairs, etc.
My frigging 93' Nissan NX doesn't qualify because it gets 22mpg according to the govt... Pisses me off!!! (It's rusty, odometer/cruise don't work, ABS broken etc... ARGH!!)
