This edition of HP's 12c Platinum calculator is a natural for real estate, finance, accounting, economics, and business calculations. It features the HP 12c standard edition's 130+ built-in functions and memory for 80 cash flows, complemented by a black and silver body, and embossed leather pouch.
If you can spend a little extra, I would go for the HP 17bII. Unless they have upgraded the 12c, the 17b was faster at inputting and calculating. I remember people using the 12c still waiting for it to finish calculating while I was already working on the next problem in my finance classes.
17B is a better calculator - you can program it to do certain calculations - but this is a fantastic price for the 12C, let alone the 12C Plat. Plat is quite a bit quicker than the original, and I happen to hate RPN.
Also, keep in mind the 12C is allowed for CFA exams (which many people who buy these will one day take) where they've now banned the 17B.

Green for you OP.
I agree with you that the HP 17B is a better calculator. Note -- I haven't used the HP 12C Platinum -- but I have used the HP-12C. I do own 2 HP-17B II's. My HP-17B was clearly superior in efficiency & clarity use, plus a much nicer & understandable display. I definitely like my HP-17B II.
The newer HP-17B II+ is similar to my HP-17B II except that it is less ruggedly built but has more memory, better battery setup & solves MIRR. However the HP-17B II+ is considerably more expensive (unless you can find a hot deal on one) than this HP 12C Platinum deal. Also the HP-12C has been the favorite in the real estate & financial industry for many years.
Like you said -- the HP 17B is no longer allowed on the CFA (I'm not one -- but am a CPA). Whereas the HP-12C is allowed.
