thanks!

It's $19.89 + $4.58 shipping at Amazon now.
A reviewer says it sucks up batteries and only works on new ones. Hope rechargeables work. FYI, the higher up models (PT-2100 and up) come with an AC adapter. The same reviewer also says new carts are $10 and they don't last long. Anyone here have one? Would you agree?

I own one of these. I only use it infrequently, though (once a week or so). The batteries are over a year old and it still works fine. The plug-in models might be a better idea in an office where the machine is used daily. However, being able to carry the machine around with you when you are making labels is a nice feature.

Regarding the tapes, you can see how long they are and compare that to the labels you expect to print. They last a long time for me, but again, I don't print tons of labels.

The ones I saw on the shelves had M-K231S tapes, which appears to be half as long as the normal M-K231. Maybe that's why he thought it was short?

I bought one of there when Amazon had them for I think it was $17. About all I have used it for it to make labels of the date I recharge batteries to stick on the case, so that I used the oldest ones first. I have made about 30 2 inch long labels. I'm still using the label cartridge that came with it and I still have the original set of batteries in it. I guess my only minor complaint would be that I sometimes have a hard time getting the backing off the label. For $9.99 I'm almost tempted to buy another.

Just like new printers come with starter ink cartridges that are 1/2 or 1/3 full, I expect that this labeler comes with a starter tape that is 1/2 or 1/3 the length of the replacement tapes. Still, the tape does last a good while with normal home usage.

Here is a more powerful Brother labeler that can be plugged in: http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/933592
The power adapter is an extra-cost accessory, but maybe you can use a generic product that you already own.
