Etch said:Worth upgrading from a 512mb 8800GTS driving 1920x1200 resolution?
That is exactly the card I am upgrading from. Should be at least 50% performance improvement at that res which is what I look for when upgrading. Great price on the (arguably) fastest single GPU card (when OC'ed) currently.
This is probably the cheapest deal by far, but I'm not too sure about getting it because of the warranty compared to XFX. It will be a huge improvement over my 8800gt.
but otherwise, the 4890 would be a very worthy upgrade from the 8800gts 512mb
Some comments: 1. It depends on games & resolution, but indeed the 285 would be faster in most cases. However, the 275 is not "better" in general. At best you could say it is similar in performance to the 4890 (although with less OC ability), or you could say it is better for specific games/resolution (and the opposite can be said as well). 2. 15% != "wayyyyy" 3. At $160 this is definitely the fastest card you can get, hence the green the thread got. 4. Tom's Hardware was great 10 years ago, there are much better sites now...
Anand's and Firingsquad review shows that 4890 beats GTX285 about 50% of the time (from 1920x to 2560x). Compare to GTX275, it is faster about 90% of the time. 4890 is significantly fater than GTX285 in HAWK and GRID.

No.
bc a 4890 for $160 is NOT, Not a good deal.
a 1GB 4890 for $160 is actually nothing short of extremely impressive. I use a 4870 pair in crossfire for 1920x1200 and I'd rather use a single 4890 2GB for that (as is my plan). However, a 1GB for this price is still impressive.

I would love to hear you break down this arguement logically.
Probably something along the lines that taking a hard hit to your Equifax credit report for a new Bill Me Later account to qualify for a (now expired) $30 rebate is a great deal for everyone
Since you actually OWN the crossfire configuration I'm open to listen to WHY you would consider such a huge downgrade.
