edit--this is off another deal board. some confusion regarding exact model-but a $299 back to school Laptop Deal does appear to be on the front page for the 7/5 B&M Circular
The deal is legit. A local manager showed me the ones they already got in for their sale in two weeks. The Acer model and actual week in July Staples store will offers the deal will vary based on your location but the specs for all models are basically the same. The regular price is $399.99 - $100IS = $299.99. This is a descent basic laptop. However, the biggest deal killer for me would be the fact that these since these Acers have Vista Basic preinstalled they do NOT qualify for the Windows 7 Upgrade program starting on Friday. There will be MANY BTS laptop deals i nthe next 6 weeks. I would wait for a laptop deal that has at least Vista Home Premium preinstalled so at least you qualify for the Windows 7 Upgrade program.

I do not see it on Amazon... At Staples, it can be got for $50 or so under the advertised price. With dollar of coupons and combined with 1 or 2 printers with offers and of course based on reselling those.

Since this laptop does not qualify for the Windows 7 upgrade offer even if you get them at $250 with no sales tax reselling these at a profit will be very difficult with all the Windows 7 Technology upgrade laptop offers that will be out in July for a little more.

How does the AMD Athlon 64 TF-20 1.6 GHz Processor stack up against the intel chips? Seems like a very basic unit.

CompUSA is selling a basic Acer notebook now. http://www.CompUSA.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=4553294&sku=S445-150034&SRCCODE=COMEM295C&cm_mmc=EML-_-Main-_-COMEM295-_-special

I'd guess that this is a pretty scary-slow processor given that the machine is so basic - but still probably adequate for light use, e.g. wordprocessing, websurfing, email.

Too many rely on the "numbers" For most the processor is just fine.
And what kind of a dumbbell looks for the bottom end pricing for something they want/need as top line.

Nothing is similar at Tiger Direct. These people are crooks and cheats. They may have refurbished with problems for this price. STAY AWAY from them and their new company COMP USA. If it has a rebate...you will never see it.
you forgot new CircuitCity.com is also owned by same company as Tiger and CrapUSA FirebirdGA said: yesidonoitall said: Similar eMachine right now at Tiger$349.xx + $1.99 s/h minus $52.50 bing Cash Back.

They are new, while yes, it is not an Acer. What diff does it make who owns what.
This is very similar to the $300 emachines that are on sale at Microcenter or OD earlier. The differences are the screen size (15.6" vs. 14.1" in the emachine), and card reader and no web cam. Don't be fool by the "AMD Athlon 64 TF-20 1.6 GHz," it is the same slow 2650e which is single core, and 65nm. Chipset is the old 690v, so don't expect to do anything graphics intensive on it (barely good enough for windows aero (irrelevent) and 720p video playback).
Yes, its a basic laptop, I thought that was covered earlier in the thread. But for $299, are you really expecting a 5ghz processor??? Its a good deal for a good laptop. EDIT: Majority beat me to the punch

Thanks you answered my question. I just assumed it was dual core but was not sure. OK, so now I know it is single core.
Still a very good deal IMHO. I bet it will play movies just fine . . . . . . just not modern games. Gamers have to pay more than this for the machine they need. Most everyone else will do great with this laptop.
Yeah, my kid just got out of school last week. Next year they'll probably start the back to school sales before school is even out the year before...

Makes me wonder if this is even a good deal (not that I'm looking for a hot deal).

Should have said this but I'll say it now. I'd like to find something under $400 with a dual core but I guess that's wishful thinking!

You can get a dual core for 400 at best buy anytime, which makes this deal warm at best.

Junk laptop, low specs. Agreed warm at best. Low end. Get a netbook, better performance. Or buy one from Tiger with Bing CashBack with better specs for lower price or same price.
This laptop is on sale starting 07/12 for $350 + tax after a $30 MIR.
Well, it will get a free Windows 7 in October, that is worth $50 But surely worth the extra anyway. If your store has one now, I would buy and get diff back on Sunday.
Staples says this about it & integrated microphone
