The problem with Acer is that they won't tell you how much you have to pay to get this "free" upgrade, until you input all the information about the computer, including the serial number.

Actually, with Acer's site, you can get as far as step 3 without entering the serial number. On that page it states:

Note: For selected countries, the upgrade is free. The blanks below will be masked and no credit information is required.

I entered US as the country, and indeed the price is listed as $0.00, and it won't allow any payment info to be entered.

You don't get your billing information until you have entered the serial number of the computer. I selected 6 different countries in different parts of the world, and blanks below were always grayed out. On the FAQs page, it's says that there will be a fee for the upgrade to cover shipping and handling. Since you have not gone through the entire process yourself, please don't comment on whether or not we will have to pay a fee in the USA, because you don't know.

I just picked LITHUANIA as the country, and there's no price listed, but I can enter payment info. So the info/behavior of step 3 does change depending on the country entered on step 2.

From the FAQ:
https://ebiz3.mentormediacorp.com/Query/faqs.aspx
What is the cost for the upgrade?
There is a fee for this upgrade to cover materials, shipping, handling, fulfillment overhead and import duty. The fee will vary depending on your location and the upgrade product being requested. For some selected countries, the upgrade is free.

Since selecting the US comes up with a listed price (of $0), and doesn't allow payment info to be entered, I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that it's one of the fee free countries.

Indeed it is great news and a testament to HP's commitment to customers. Dell better step up to the plate on their refurbished machines with Widows 7 or they will be handed their ass by HP and future customers on this issue. Dell always seems to have to have an ass kicking before they do the right thing for customers.

Hello. I am trying to find out information on the Windows 7 upgrade offer. Specifically, I have Vista Business on this PC and am contemplating building another PC. If I purchase the Windows 7 upgrade preorder, can I install that Win 7 upgrade on a yet to be built custom PC at a later date? Or would I have to install the upgrade on the PC that currently runs Vista?

Thanks.

EDIT: I should mention that the Vista Business copy that I am using came from Microsoft for free. It was not preinstalled.

Wrong thread. This thread is for new PC purchases that are eligible for the free upgrade. You want the thread on the upgrade pre-orders, which is here:

As a beta tester for Windows 7 I was pleased to get an email from Microsoft offering to sell me a W7 upgrade for $49 when ordered pre-release as a reward for helping evaluate the product. Imagine my surprise when I see Costco offering the same pre-release order upgrade for $44. That sort of shows how much Microsoft appreciated my participation.

Well, in fairness to Microsoft, supposedly the number of discounted upgrades at $49 is limited.

Did they actual use the phrase "reward" in the email, or imply that it was exclusive to beta testers? Or was it more like, "as a beta tester, we'd thought you'd be interested in a special limited-time offer to pre-order Windows 7 at a discounted price"?

Also, what does your post have to do with clearanceman's post that you quoted?

"You've been using Windows® 7 for a while now, and we hope you've been enjoying a simpler PC experience. Because you've been a loyal Windows customer, we're offering you the Windows 7 upgrade at a great introductory price* - only $49.99 for Home Premium or $99.99 for Professional. It's our way of saying thanks for trying it out." Emphasis is mine is but who cares. The implication is that they are giving me a special deal which they are not as this deal is available universally and to put salt on the wound the deal is even cheaper at Costco.

If you have installed following Vista versions then microsoft site says that you can upgrade to following Windows 7 versions.
Vista Basic= Not eligible for upgrade
Vista Home Premium= Eligible for upgrade to Windows 7 Premium
Vista Professional= Eligible for upgrade to Windows 7 Professional
Vista Ultimate= Eligible for upgradt to Windows 7 Ultimate

you cant upgrade one version type with another version type. If you have lower version of vista and need higher version of Windows 7 then you have to clean install a full new version of windows 7. No "upgrades" of higher version of windows 7 works in that case.

Kudos to HP for offering free Win7 on refurbished models.
But comparing HP refurbished against Dell outlet is not an apple to apple comparison.
Dell offers much more choices and in some-cases really good deals.
(I have yet to see any high-end refurbished model from HP with Intel I7-920 and ATI Radeon 4850 at a low-price.)
According to the following link, the decision has not been made at Dell and may not be available in 2 weeks.

Did you type in the serial number of the computer to be upgraded?
Did you press the "compute charges" button to verify the charges for Lithuania (and the USA) are zero?

No, you didn't. Until somebody actually is able to do this, we won't know. Maybe the upgrade is free, but there may be a charge for shipping and handling. Please.... just stop.

I didn't need to. Changing the country was enough to affect changes in the price and payment fields.

Did you press the "compute charges" button to verify the charges for Lithuania (and the USA) are zero?
I don't think the Lithuania upgrade is free, because the price for it wasn't automatically filled to $0.00, and the payment fields for Lithuania allowed input. This is in contrast to picking US, which causes the payment fields to be locked out, and the price field is automatically filled in as $0.00

Until somebody actually is able to do this, we won't know.
We don't know for sure, but we can make educated and well-reasoned guesses. Acer's site says that some countries will get the upgrade fee free, and the setup for the price and payment fields when selecting US all suggest that the US is one of those countries.

You may disagree, but I feel providing the info available (the price and payment fields change based on country, selecting the US causes a price of $0.00 to be pre-filled and the payment fields to be locked, in contrast to other countries like Lithuania) and a well-reasoned conclusion from that info (the Acer US upgrade is free), is more helpful to those in this thread than just saying "we can't know anything for certain."
