There was this thread regarding Toshiba on sale at Bestbuy for $449, with AMD Athlon QL-65 processor. Was also noted there is similar model available at Costco with Intel T6400, price is $599 in store and there is $100 coupon in Costco coupon book. Costco model has slightly faster processor, plus comes with Costco's excellent 90 day return policy and 2 year warranty (versus BestBuy's 14 day return policy and 1 year warranty). Costco model is exclusive to Costco, so hard to find reviews and comparisons. However, you can configure similar model on Toshiba site (L300-ST2501), you find lots of reviews there. 112 reviews, rated 5 stars. Configured as sold at Costco it's $675, but still 1 year warranty, no 2 year offered but 3 year is $85 more. Here is detail product specs for Costco's model (click here).

We chose the Costco model, picked this unit up for my daughter for college. Feels solid, looks good, still early to tell anything significant but it's working. Having 90 day return was primary decision point -- plus 2 year warranty is plus too. Worth the $50 additional, plus I get 2% CashBack as Executive member.

FYI - Free upgrade to Windows 7, info here.

yes, got one yesterday. Pretty happy so far except the glossy finish that can easily attrack dirt and dust.

Also picked one up and could not agree more.

Has anybody but me had issues with the build quality on Toshiba laptops? I've had two now: an entry level A135 from a FW deal several years ago (HUGE problems trying to find XP drivers and trying to run Vista, enven after boosting up the paltry 512mb memory that it came with - it should be a caning offense for manufacturers to put out a computer with so little memory. There were also several straight up hardware failures, too), and a high end 17" Qosmio (the poor sods at Toshiba have had to replace virtually every component of this unit, from the motherboard to the screen, and everything in between). It has really made me reluctant to buy another.

I thought Costco used to have a lot longer return policy than 90 days for computers? I know SamsClub has a 6 month return policy for their computers.

wrong compare... costco is much better system.. duo core 2, 3gb ram, better graphic card.. run much quiter...

Got one for the wife. It comes with Windows DVD Maker and Picasa which is the kind of software we were looking for. Make sure you check for Windows updates several times. Took me 1 hr. to download all the updates. The last big one was SP2. Also, don't forget to sign up for the Windows 7 update.

I'm curious to know. Did this model qualify for the upgrade? I ask because I checked the Win7 Toshiba qualifying laptops and this model was not on it. The list is very specific so I'm wondering if this one qualifies.

Yes it is, already processed my upgrade order, it's confirmed.

I registered and got a confirmation number. So yes, this specific model qualifies. It does come with Vista Home Premium. Those list of laptops are those only purchased from Toshiba.com. From the stated terms and conditions, it says any new Satellite, Satellite Pro, Qosmio, Tecra, and Portégé branded laptop computers pre-installed with the Vista Home Premium are eligible.

They then also bumped up the warranty to 2 years on these items, so you get better coverage after the purchase - but nice return policy by Sam's.

Processor is and memory, that's what makes the difference - only 1MB cache on lower priced BestBuy item, plus about 30% slower in benchmarks.

I think graphics cards are same, at least based on the product specs (click here.

Other benefits of Costco model is DVD burner support "Labelflash", not critical selling point for me, but shows there are internal differences between these models. In addition Costco has better return policy and 1 year additional warranty. BestBuy model looks like a good alternative if someone wants / needs to save a little $$, but it is outlet item so may be subject to limited stock in areas.

Does this have a HDMI port?

No, it doesn't.

I heard that the Windows 7 disk will come with both 32 and 64 bit versions. Anyone know if you will be able to upgrade to the 64 bit version from this 32 bit version of Vista. I heard that you can't upgrade a 32 bit version of Vista to a 64 bit version of Vista.

That's correct. You will only be upgraded equivalent to the version you have. That only seems fair.

My current laptop is a HP Pavillion dv6000 with AMD Turion 64X2 TL-50 1.60 GHz and
NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 video. Would this be much of an upgrade? I want to use it mostly for imaging, video and Microsoft Flight Simulator.

I don't see too many greens for the OP. I think this is kind of HOT deal.

From CPU benchmark (Passmark CPU Mark), your current processor (64X2 TL-50) = 678, the new processor (T6400) = 1317. Benchmark on video card, current = 55, new video procesor would be 130.

That said, if you are happy with performance of your current system, no need to upgrade. If you are looking for performance boost in your day to day use of your laptop, this looks like it would effectively double your processing power. You also get free upgrade to Windows 7 when available, so that's worth something right there

Nice thing about Costco, you can purchase it and if it doesn't meet your needs/expectations, you can bring it back.

I bought a Toshiba laptop for my daughter 5 yrs ago. I thought it was pretty good deal at the time, so,I bought me one few days later. After 2 years, both screen went dead. I bought a third one 2 years ago, now the screen is dead. So, I would advise anyone buying Toshiba to beware of the screen problems that I had.

Thanks OP and others. I'm writing this from my brand new Toshiba laptop!

I bought this on 6/29.. it effectively crashed today. I had to call customer service and have the whole thing restored to factory settings. The restore process is not going well, either. Keep getting stuck at the last step, been 2 hours now. Anyone else have similar issues? I think I might have to send this back for an exchange.

I just got one today. There is no restore disk or any windows back up disk. I check on my Hard drive. There is no back up. Is this normal or my package missing the restore disk?

bitlotai said: I just got one today. There is no restore disk or any windows back up disk. I check on my Hard drive. There is no back up. Is this normal or my package missing the restore disk?
Most companies stopped including OS disks a couple of years ago. You have to burn your own restore CD.

still available, now without coupon, I think, just with an instant rebate. I think I might get this tomorrow.

Mine is still humming along. I've been pretty happy with it (it runs Vista much faster than my now dead thinkpad T61) for the week and a half I've had it, especially for $500. Throw in a costco warranty and it's an easy decision.

Guest here,

I am looking for a laptop that will be used as a secondary computer. Mostly something to keep downstairs that I can use to surf the net and do some scrapbooking on along with my daughter playing some of her web games (ie: playhouse disney sort of stuff).

Would you say that this Toshiba at Costco would be a better deal than this Acer?

Yes, and you wouldn't have to deal with TigerDirect!

Hold down "0" and press the start button to prompt system restore

Is this in-store only? Can someone post the Costco Item number please? Does it have HDMI port?

Anyone? Is this still on? My nearest costco is quite a drive. I was hoping to save a trip by calling early..

Red for you. Plenty of notebooks out there for less then $400 that do everything this POS does.

Costco is now selling a T6400 for $579.99 (after $100 rebate) which sounds like the same one you guys got for $100 cheaper last month. I just ordered it but am now feeling like I am getting ripped off. Is this the computer you all bought?

Costco is now selling the T6400 for $579.99 and that is after a $100 discount! Can anyone that bought the laptop tell me if this is the same one? I just ordered it and already feel ripped off if you all bought it for $499!
Toshiba T6400
Thanks!!!

Costco Toshiba T6400

Check at the very bottom of the page, you'll see the model number for the item you ordered is L305-S5970
Which is different from the L305-S5946 that this thread was about.
How different? Not sure, but it shouldn't be too hard to find out.

OK there is a difference.... The one that is being sold now for $579.99 (after $100 coupon) has the software (Microsoft Home and Student Student 2007) included.

Just in case there are any potential buyers out there, they just lowered the price yesterday from $579.99 to $549.99.
