i work for the police. 90% of the guns are shot once a year, mine has the number of rounds i use to qualify shot through it, nothing more.
But is it up for sale?
Yes! The police are run by the government. The government has infinite money. Even though the used G23 are still great guns, the police department had to trade them in to get some new S&W M&P for more $$ and new holsters and send their armoror to M&P school and such. The S&W rep came by and took some police officials out to dinner and convinced them that their new gun was so much better. Of course using the money to "force" the officers to train more than once every 6 months would have made them better shooters but theres no sales rep going to take them out to dinner for that program.
Also the police are run by the government and in government when you have an allocated budget and you fail to spend the money, it means a reduced budget next year. So perhaps the deparment was getting close to the end of their fiscal year and needed to spend $20k somehow.
I would suggest a complete tear down of the gun and clean when you get it. Just because cops shoot their guns once or twice a year doesnt mean they are good. I have seen a cop's gun that wouldnt even cycle the slide. He shot it to qualify and then worked marine patrol for 6 months until he looked at it again without cleaning it. So much rust had built up that we needed a hammer to knock the slide back. I wouldnt worry about that with these guns, I am sure the store looked at them at least casually, but just something to think about.

Excellent information to know! I'm just over 2300rds on a pistol I got in November.
Should I find comfort in buying a police trade-in because they are never used or be scared out of mind that the last aimed shot a LEO took could have been 364 days ago at qualifying?

The gun could care less at how long it's been before it has been shot, neither should you. I've had quite a few trade-in guns over the years and aside from replacing the springs before relying on them, I never thought twice about it.
As a thought about duty weapons, I have been carrying the same Glock 22 for eight years and I have likely only fired 1200rds through it (100rds a year to qualify plus some extra times at the range). For the record, I use a Glock 17 at the range setup the same as my duty weapon so I get most of the same feel of shooting the .40S&W but I get to save money on ammo.
A few years ago these prices would have been a little high, but with the current .GOV issues I guess we should be happy with $299/379 prices.

The gun would be shipped to a local FFL (federal firearms license) who would transfer the weapon to you after filling out the federal paperwork and jumping through any hoops you have in your state.
If you say where you are, someone can help you further as far as what might be required.
edit....
You would have to be 21 for starters, and also pay a fee to the local FFL which could be as low as free (some do them for free for NRA or military members) to some rather high amounts. The most I ever paid was $20 cash. Some FFLs will try to collect sales tax (if you have that in your state) but that's hard to legally do when they are not actually selling the item.

Ok, I am over 21 and I am in southern cali. I have never seen a gunshop anywhere near me here
I wont attempt to interpret Cali gun laws with a 10 foot pole, unlimited access to Lexus Nexus, and a sexy paralegal assistant.
My advice is to move anywhere but Chicago, Cali, NJ, NYC, and I think Massachusetts if you want to own a handgun. But then again clearly the strict gun laws in those areas make it so safe that you dont even need one for self defense!

Where in SoCal? Lookup the closest Turners, they're all over and they'll answer the questions and walk you through the process of getting the permit. IIRC There's a $1 book you need to buy to study for the test, pass the test, order the gun, wait 10 days, walk out of the store with it. Something like that anyway. GL.

I live in Santa Clarita near Magic Mountain. I've never heard of a turner, but I will look it up. Thanks
What gun site can you use to ccompare gun prices? IN other words, how good of a deal are these guns?
I looked on Gunbroker.com (only large gun site I know), and they show many priced at $300+ with a great deal of bidding left.
I want a Glock, but the S&W has a great price.
So are these a great deal or just warm?
I will use the gun for mostly home protection and to the gun range (onc e I find one).
I have a Rossi 38 that will certainly do the job, but I want a better gun.
For the experts, i have a few questions: 1. Gun safety. I will keep my gun locked up. What does everyone use? I currently have a toolbox with a key lock on it. I was considering getting a small gun cabinet to hold these two pistols. I wouold like it to lock with a combination lock, so that I would not need a key to open it, nor could someone that got the key be able to open it. 2. The gun will be kept at the house for protrection and I may one day get a concealed weapon permit for it as well. 3. I know I need to find a gun dealer, but should I find ine first, work out teh deal, then order it? 4. I am in NC, what do I need tyo do to get this gun? I bought a pistol in NC about 15 years ago and I simply co,pleted a police form, they ran my background, and I got like a couple of certificates issued to me to buy a pipstol wioth. I bouight it from a friend.

Yeah, there are Turners stores in the LA area and several indoor firing ranges that rent and sell guns. Look up either one.
The book is only $0.75 or something, but taking the test costs something. Then there's the obnoxiously priced FFL fee in SoCal. I looked up FFL people in my area (on GunBroker) and found a guy who would do the transfer for $50 (the lowest price I found in this area). What he didn't tell me up front was that he's a scammer. He won't hand over the gun until you pay him the state sales tax on it. He's in the Torrance area. I'd avoid him.

I used to use auction arms as well, bought a couple good deals on there over the years. Yu have to remember that gun values are skewed with the current government.

Warm for online deals but hot compared to what a local shop would charge.

#3 Find the dealer who will do the transfer as you'll need them to send their FFL to the dealer you are buying it from. Many dealer will not help you as they feel it takes away from their business. I have done a few transfers for $15-20 so it is possible.
#4 The permit system is still in place, or you can also get a CCW permit and that will also take the place of the issued handgun purchase permits. What county are you in? Someone might be able to suggest a transfer dealer plus the gun auction sites usually have search tools to find willing dealers. I'm in Gaston County and can suggest a place in Gaston and Lincoln for a cheap transfer.
