Doesn't mention night sights? I jumped in on a glock 22 deal and am very happy. Glocks rule.

These are 2nd Generation Glocks.

No tactical rails or finger grips...

A lot of people pay a chunk of cash to have the finger grooves cut off.

Personally I'm a s&w guy though, these older 3rd gen s&w are some of the most sturdy pistols ever made, my 1076 feeds empty cases from the mag even.

That seems like an incredible price for the Smith and Wesson.

I may have to get one of those.

Yes! The police are run by the government. The government has infinite money. Even though the used G23 are still great guns, the police department had to trade them in to get some new S&W M&P for more $$ and new holsters and send their armoror to M&P school and such. The S&W rep came by and took some police officials out to dinner and convinced them that their new gun was so much better. Of course using the money to "force" the officers to train more than once every 6 months would have made them better shooters but theres no sales rep going to take them out to dinner for that program.

Also the police are run by the government and in government when you have an allocated budget and you fail to spend the money, it means a reduced budget next year. So perhaps the deparment was getting close to the end of their fiscal year and needed to spend $20k somehow.

I would suggest a complete tear down of the gun and clean when you get it. Just because cops shoot their guns once or twice a year doesnt mean they are good. I have seen a cop's gun that wouldnt even cycle the slide. He shot it to qualify and then worked marine patrol for 6 months until he looked at it again without cleaning it. So much rust had built up that we needed a hammer to knock the slide back. I wouldnt worry about that with these guns, I am sure the store looked at them at least casually, but just something to think about.

Excellent information to know! I'm just over 2300rds on a pistol I got in November.

Should I find comfort in buying a police trade-in because they are never used or be scared out of mind that the last aimed shot a LEO took could have been 364 days ago at qualifying?

The gun could care less at how long it's been before it has been shot, neither should you. I've had quite a few trade-in guns over the years and aside from replacing the springs before relying on them, I never thought twice about it.

As a thought about duty weapons, I have been carrying the same Glock 22 for eight years and I have likely only fired 1200rds through it (100rds a year to qualify plus some extra times at the range). For the record, I use a Glock 17 at the range setup the same as my duty weapon so I get most of the same feel of shooting the .40S&W but I get to save money on ammo.

A few years ago these prices would have been a little high, but with the current .GOV issues I guess we should be happy with $299/379 prices.

The glock is a great deal for a great gun.

How does one go about buying a gun for the first time? I am sure if I buy this, I would need a license or something along those lines

The gun would be shipped to a local FFL (federal firearms license) who would transfer the weapon to you after filling out the federal paperwork and jumping through any hoops you have in your state.

If you say where you are, someone can help you further as far as what might be required.

edit....

You would have to be 21 for starters, and also pay a fee to the local FFL which could be as low as free (some do them for free for NRA or military members) to some rather high amounts. The most I ever paid was $20 cash. Some FFLs will try to collect sales tax (if you have that in your state) but that's hard to legally do when they are not actually selling the item.

Ok, I am over 21 and I am in southern cali. I have never seen a gunshop anywhere near me here

I wont attempt to interpret Cali gun laws with a 10 foot pole, unlimited access to Lexus Nexus, and a sexy paralegal assistant.

My advice is to move anywhere but Chicago, Cali, NJ, NYC, and I think Massachusetts if you want to own a handgun. But then again clearly the strict gun laws in those areas make it so safe that you dont even need one for self defense!

Where in SoCal? Lookup the closest Turners, they're all over and they'll answer the questions and walk you through the process of getting the permit. IIRC There's a $1 book you need to buy to study for the test, pass the test, order the gun, wait 10 days, walk out of the store with it. Something like that anyway. GL.
