I got a note from them, this year they automatically renew your membership with the credit card they have on file...

Purchase a NEW membership certificate. Restrictions
Valid for new memberships and upgrades to existing memberships

I guess nothing can stop you from quiting the old one and signing up again. Though there was a period when costco would retro-actively charge you for the months you did not use your membership if you let it expire in the past, not sure if they do that anymore...

Also, Costco stores that I've been to in the east coast, close at 8:00PM and have no self-check out counters. BJS has them and they usually close at 10:00PM where we live. This helps when you want to make a smaller purchase like a can of milk and cereal and get out. Hope that helps someone.

In any case, Green for you OP.

I lived in Buffalo for 7 years. You have BJs that we don't have in Illinois.
About 10+ years ago, it seemed to me that the main difference between BJs (formerly Price Club) and Costco was that BJs used to carry stuff more family oriented (bulk food, toys, etc.) and Costco had a focus on things for adults. My personal problem w/ BJs is that they seem to stop carrying anything that I am buying regularly. We had to join Costco a couple of years ago because BJs stopped carrying Oscar Meyer bulk-pack bacon.

After some testing, I think that both buy/sell inferior gasoline (not worth the savings given the decreased vehicle performance).

You may want to check. Memory is that Price Club merged with Costco. BJs is a different chain of warehouse clubs that still exists. No question that Costco is the best.

Sorry about 'northern' areas of NY state; perhaps Costco will find an appropriate location(s) there.

BTW, some in Albany may appreciate one as it appears that the State Senate may need to purchase in significant bulk for its 'extended stay'

Yes, Costco bought out Price Club. The NY Senators are purchasing mattresses at Costco to use as all they do is sleep on the job.

Toadster said:a membership is worth the price just in the gas savings alone - easily pays itself off in the yearWould you mind providing some math to back-up this statement? The gas at Costco is at best 8 cent cheaper than the cheapest gas stations around (like a Delta). So lets say you have a 15 gallon tank, you just saved yourself a $1.20. If you fill up 52 times a year, that comes out to $62.40. Now lets factor in the 30 minute average wait time until you can actually pump, and the out of the way drive you'd have to make in order to make it to a Costco to begin with. The benefits have just cancelled themselves out. In the end, unless you live right next to a Costco, and only pump gas when no one is there (which is rare), you gained nothing.

Caveat, I'm a costco member, and find their prices great which is why I shop there. Can't be $6 for a 24 pack of Poland Sprint sport bottles. I pay $100/yr, and receive my annual 2% Cash Back check of around that much making my membership pretty much free.

I guess the point of this tirade was that you should NOT get a costco membership just so you can pump gas there, because you'll quickly run out of patience.

30 minutes, you are lucky.
Here in Oregon, they have to pump it and they are slow pokes.

Nice thing about BJ's is you can use more than one coupon for an item. So if you have 2 coupons for life cereal and they sell a box with 2 bags of cereal, you can use both coupons.

Care to share with the class exactly what that "testing" was? I've run Costco gas in seven separate vehicles my wife and I have owned over the past 12 years and we've seen NO decrease in MPG or performance on Costco gas. And it's always the lowest price.

I agree it's not worth it to get a Costco membership just for the cheap gas but I think you need to re-do your "math".

There are 3 Costco gas stations near me (in the Tacoma, WA area) that are no more than 3-5 minutes away from a freeway exit. To me that's not "out of my way".

And I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes to get to the pump - and that was last summer when gas was $4+/gallon. Usually I pull right up to the pump because people don't know the hoses are long enough to reach the filler on either side of your car - so you don't have to wait for the pump "on your side".

What's a "Visa AMEX" card?

It's a combo card. Weird, but I saw Visa offering them once.

Has anyone who had a previous membership use this to renew their membership? And, did you receive the expiration date from date of current renewal or from the date of your last expiration date?

The original link now shows that this deal expires on 12/31/09. The Fat Wallet link for Costco also shows an expiration of 12/31/09. They have also added 48 AA batteries to the offing.
* FREE rotisserie chicken
* FREE photo processing
* FREE Kirkland Signature™ 2lb. bag of coffee
* FREE Kirkland Signature™ 48 pk "AA" batteries
* – and more!

My membership is up for renewal so I might as well upgrade and take the freebies. They should refund the difference between white star and executive membership, if the Costco CashBack is under $50.

I pm'd the OP for clarification, and received no response.

The site offering this costco membership deal is PMG Data Services, Inc. I phoned Costco.com to ask if the upgraded membership offer on this site would immediately note my renewal date as beginning today or from when my last membership expired. I asked this because I wanted to order online today for deals expiring tomorrow. The answer was the costco.com csr said she was not aware of this offer, and did not believe it was valid and that it would therefore probably not communicate my membership renewal & upgrade to costco.com for my order. I know, csrs are often wrong but just thought I would share the information.

Would someone who upgraded their membership using this offer share their experience?

Bring on the red for phoning.
