Frys has the retail version for $114 if anyone is interested in 5 year warranty vs 3 years for OEM. |

Beware you are likely to run into a lot of hearsay posts trashing these Seagate 1.5TB drives from totally ignorant non-owners in these FW threads! They have even been known to cite biased non-verified Newegg user reviews also most written by non-onwers. Some even go so far as to cite reputable hardware sites to make their point even though the site has offically gone on record with an opposing view of those trashign these drives! For Example...Toms had reviewed this drive back on October 2 of this year, and we did not find any issue similar to alleged problems Ordered two of these drives. Drive #1 was DOA and I returned it for refund. Drive #2 worked for about 2 months until it started click-click-clicking. Sent to Seagate warranty department for Drive #3. Drive #3 made a LOUD noise on startup and I returned it for a replacement. Drive #4 made same loud clicking noise on start up (likely head malfunction according to Seagate chat). I'm still waiting for Drive #5. I had to pay shipping to return 2 of the drives to Seagate. Average turn-around time was 2-3 weeks for each replacement experience. Yes they all had the most up-to-date firmware. After the fourth drive failure they offered a different (1TB) model, citing the fact that they don't make the 1.5T drives anymore. Seagate was extremely unpleasant and condescending on the telephone. Your experience may (and probably will) be different. Personally, I am avoiding Seagate; most people would after going through 4+ drives in order to get a good one. |

Be careful, the message board police will castigate you for posting a bad review. They only consider the good reviews in evidence. Too funny! A simple search will demonstrate that many people are having problems with these drives. It is the single most problematical drive out there. Good luck to those who chance it. |

Yeh all those same bad reviews posted by the same 6 reviewers who never even owned the product spread across the internet by ignorant non-owners of these drives like you. But then again as you stated a simple search would have revealed that it is the same few are posting all the negative reviews too. You would think those bogus reviewers would at least use different names on different sites? Bottom line any drive can fail and legitimate negative reviews from real drive owners are just as welcome as good ones. As far these being single most promblematic drive out there? Once again you are spreading you own unsubstantiated fud based on your own non-ownership of these drives. BTW you might want to google IBM Deskstar. |

Perfect demonstration of how people who don't even own a product often end up being the most vocal and repetitive disseminators of negative commentary. |

FYI...all the drives I've received from Dell have been the newer firmware...granted, I'm using them in a Linux box, but I haven't any problems with them: [root@storage03 ~]# df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 168G 75G 85G 47% / /dev/sda1 190M 15M 166M 9% /boot tmpfs 4.0G 0 4.0G 0% /dev/shm /dev/sdi1 1.4T 235G 1.1T 18% /mnt/holdingdisks/dmp0001 /dev/sdf1 1.4T 1.3T 0 100% /mnt/amandatapes/tap0001 /dev/sdj1 1.4T 731G 576G 56% /mnt/amandatapes/tap0002 /dev/sdk1 1.4T 426G 881G 33% /mnt/amandatapes/tap0003 /dev/sdl1 917G 119G 752G 14% /mnt/amandatapes/tap0004 /dev/sdh1 1.4T 1.3T 0 100% /mnt/amandatapes/tap0006 /dev/sdg1 1.4T 924G 383G 71% /mnt/amandatapes/tap0007 /dev/sdb1 1.4T 719G 588G 56% /mnt/amandatapes/tap0009 /dev/sdc1 1.4T 9.5G 1.3T 1% /mnt/amandatapes/tap0010 /dev/sdd1 1.4T 586G 720G 45% /mnt/amandatapes/tap0011 /dev/sde1 1.4T 133G 1.2T 11% /mnt/amandatapes/tap0012 |

Got this deal last month and have had no problem with the drives so far. Just been using an rsync script to mirror them occasionally. I figure if a drive is going to go out it usually happens in the first few months. After that time period is up Ill clear one of them and actually start using it. |
