Pulled the trigger. Finally. Yay! Say hello to my little N4100Pro.

(I swear, FW, you had better not find a better deal in the next 2 weeks!)

in for 1, thx OP.

Ordered two of these drives. Drive #1 was DOA and I returned it for refund. Drive #2 worked for about 2 months until it started click-click-clicking. Sent to Seagate warranty department for Drive #3. Drive #3 made a LOUD noise on startup and I returned it for a replacement. Drive #4 made same loud clicking noise on start up (likely head malfunction according to Seagate chat). I'm still waiting for Drive #5. I had to pay shipping to return 2 of the drives to Seagate. Average turn-around time was 2-3 weeks for each replacement experience. Yes they all had the most up-to-date firmware.

After the fourth drive failure they offered a different (1TB) model, citing the fact that they don't make the 1.5T drives anymore.

Seagate was extremely unpleasant and condescending on the telephone.

Your experience may (and probably will) be different. Personally, I am avoiding Seagate; most people would after going through 4+ drives in order to get a good one.

Thanks for your analysis based upon personal experience!!!! I was thinking of getting and putting in my INOI DVD/HDD player. Currently have only 320GB and it only holds @30 movies for me. I may pass now.....

And I guess they thought you couldn't count! Did you ask for the 2TB model?

I bought these a few weeks ago and am using them in a RAID-5 NAS (Thecus n5200) and have not had any issues thus far. They have the CC1H firmware.

I can remember when $1 per MB was standard, man, I am old. Anyone want to play a game on my Atari 800? I upgraded the ram to 64K!

those who wanna take plunge.. juss check the Newegg, tomshardware reviews before spendin ur 200 bucks.
7200.11 version seagate HDDs are plagued by firmware issues. Many are DOA.
highly recommend 12th gen drives. if you dun wann to regret later.

I see the 7200.12 1 TB drives for about $80, so 3 TB would be about $240. If they are that much improved it might be worth it but how many drives can one house? unless, of course, I buy a new case......

Wrong, as is your assumption everyone is male. (You might find out about us womenfolk if you spent less of your time trashing products you have never owned and aren't interested in.) Anyway, I've made my position on "contributors" like you very clear here, where I've also advocated a standard warning for this drive as everyone and their cousin in solitary confinement already knows the reputation of this drive and knows to check the reviews first on any product they buy. But thanks for your exceedingly valuable contribution all the same. I know actual experience with the product isn't as important as regurgitating others' opinions, but I promise to let the thread know if any of my new drives arrive DOA or with old firmware.

Edit: Hey 'kid, way to red me on a post that merely said I pulled the trigger. Classy!

I bought a Seagate 7200.12 drive 3 days back after doing my research. I was just passing out the info I collected from various sources to people who cud possibly make a mistake by buying this.
Talk about assumption.

Implied from your silly suggestion is that everyone have to read every other thread and check the warnings before start reading a thread. You are "smart"!!. Where did you get ur degree from?

but I promise to let the thread know if any of my new drives arrive DOA or with old firmware.

haha ur personal review!!!. Aiyo girlll!! aint it the same thing i said. i.e. Read the reviews.
Unless u believe your personal experience with the drive has more value than other people experience
with their drives.

yep. a piece of useless information . to waste the bandwidth. and to misguide other people to follow your stupid actions and waste their hard earned money on an inferior product.

oh wait. i just checked the other thread. it seems u dunn even know what is giving red! given red for people who even shared there personal review their abt the drive.

Then you must know the 7200.12 benchmarks are inferior to the 7200.11:

Why are people who don't own this product obsessed with trashing it? Once again, someone who has no experience with this drive proclaims anyone buying it is stupid and wasting money on an inferior product. Talk about assumption.

?? ..its people who owned the product trashed it. I just trusted their experience and passed the info here. Is that wrong?

And Do everyone has to find out everything from their own personal bad experience? I understand some people dun trust others and think others are stupid to give bad reviews.
Like the ducky said she will give her personal experience with the drive here. so that others can make informed decision based on her exprnce. But dunn trust personal experience of other people who owned it already.
Anyone who want to do that is still free to do that. But I guess there are also people who dunn want to do that.

Moma : boy .. dun jump out of the window.. you could break ur neck and possibly die
Toddler: Moma, have you ever done that and died. if not why the hell are u advising me Moma

alert mods

"I'm not trashing it, other people trashed it and I just repeated stuff I heard." Yeah, I'm really going to put my faith in your opinion.

People post the same useless crap in just about every hard drive thread that sprouts up here. It is still incredible to me how passionate people can be about something they've never even used.

alert mods

Haha, I implied no such thing...I'm not the one who calls myself a whiz, or who compares FWers to toddlers in need of your mothering!

In that thread I merely took issue with people insisting others are thickheaded for buying the drive - that we somehow fail to understand that 1TB is better than a failed 1.5TB. Thanks for confirming my correct "assumption" you never bought this drive by the way - if mine are in good condition, it will be you who has wasted money on the smaller v12. And don't insult everyone else's intelligence here - if it were you really concerned over "wasting bandwidth" you would have also redded everyone else who said they bought one. I was letting the OP know he helped me out and I was appreciative.

Speaking of not understanding, the whole point is that we already know the reputation of the drive. FWers already check reviews; knowing that Tom's Hardware and the Egg have reviews does not make you in possession of some special, secret knowledge. I think personal reviews are great, which is why I would be publishing a brand new personal review on the drive, whereas you are republishing others' reviews FWers have seen already in dozens of threads - very few of which have been on the recent batch shipped from Dell.

I noticed a guy posted today in the Seagate 1TB 7200.12 deal thread that he's gone through two of those that have died on him so far. No hard drive is perfect.

bah, looks like i'm too late.

I find it amusing that someone has a need to hang out in this thread pumping these crap drives just because you were foolish enough to but them. Why is it important to you that other people buy this drive?
These are unquestionably the worst reviewed drives in the world. In addition, if you did even a little research, you would know that 1.5 Terabyte drives have problems among all manufacturers. At least Western Digital admits this problem, and sells a drive (the "RE" series)made specifically for RAID arrays. They also point out that "regular" 1.5 terabyte drives are not enterprise drives, and are not suitable for RAID.
These drives are crap, even if yours didn't break yet.
I am buying Western Digital "RE", the best drives currently made, and my data will be secure.

alert mods

I find it amusing that people feel the need to hang out in this thread crapping these drives, when they haven't bought or used them, nor do they even intend to do so. As I said before, that's becoming par for the course in these hard drive threads.

So as usual, we have yet another inflammatory post from someone who never bought or used this drive, insulting anyone who says anything positive about these drives. Well, I have ten of them, and I'm quite satisfied. Now watch who reds me for saying that.

Enough said.

They wouldn't replace it with a 2TB model (I asked).
