Dunno if its coincidental with the Maxtor aquisition or what....but other then the comments like this you see frequently...I have never had had a HDD die on me that I didnt cause going back to the 8088 XT days untill a couple seagates I picked up a couple years ago which have died and been RMA'd four times now. Personally I wont be buying another Seagate drive any time soon. Decent deal on the twin pack though if you arent scared of or been scared off by late model seagates.

I think most people reading 75 posts down have already created their opinion and are looking to reinforce it further (in either direction, for or against the product). My post was meant for those who need real world experience from an end user. I think if people limited their posts to objective information rather than being opinionated or subjective or inflammatory, then it would quite a service to most people reading this site. |

My 1.5tb Seagates works fine. No problems. They are setup as Raid mirror, despite helpful posters telling me that 'they cannot be used in Raid mode'. Go figure. However, what is not working for me is FatWallet Cash Back. I noticed that I didn't get Cash Back for a Dell purchase a few months ago, nor for this recent drive purchase. Is this drive just not valid for CashBack, or is Dell keeping my dough? I have had no problems using CashBack with Sears, Newegg, etc. Just Dell. |

FWIW, I've used over 50 of these 1.5TB drives with either shipped or flashed updated firmware over the last 7 months with two failures. Well within in the norm for all hard drives. YMMV. |

Okay, here's my promised review. -Drives were CCH1 firmware out of the box -Both drives arrived in perfect condition, no DOAs (though I was slightly dissatisfied with the Dell packaging - box, strip of packing paper, and one piece of cardboard that held just one of the short sides of the drives - other side could have been more cushioned) -Put the 2 drives in RAID 1 (these are specifically named in a short list of drives Thecus recommends for my NAS, despite people saying they're not for RAID). -Currently 44 hour up-time with near continuous reading and writing from multiple sources (doubling as media server for VuNow VN1000HD player [an inexpensive, full-featured product I highly recommend so far, btw]) -Long S.M.A.R.T. tests and bad block scan show healthy. Was going to post a screenshot but I don't care enough to sign up for Flickr. My review proves nothing, and 44 hours is piecemeal, but it's another drop in the bucket showing a lot of these comments are just fearmongering by non-owners who have explicitly called FWers who (after taking the evidence into consideration) decided to buy "stupid" and "foolish" - perhaps a symptom needing to justify to themselves their decision of paying too much for a different, smaller drive that could similarly fail at any moment.* If you really need super-safe enterprise-level solution and are willing to pay for it, there are certainly more reliable alternatives to SATA anyway. Furthermore, at the risk of being redundant, reducing risk via redundancy is key for enterprise and home users alike. We can't know for sure with statistically dubious self-selected reviews (people who have been burned write many more reviews than those who haven't), but it appears as though the majority of the latest drives with the new firmware preinstalled are working perfectly for many people (check out the comments from those who own 10 and 50 of these models, rather than...0). *Do note one of the most outspoken repeat negative commenters has proven themselves misinformed or has intentionally lied about several things (doesn't work in RAID, implied firmware could be any version, only 1 year warranty). |

I have 3 of these drives for 5 months and 2 of them for 3 months. The first 3 had the 'bad' firmware, which were easily upgraded to the 'good' firmware on receipt. The other 2 came with the CCH1. I have had zero issues with the drives. DOA drives and other clicking issues could be attributed to improper shipping as easily as it could be contributed to poor QA at Seagate/Dell. The drives shipped from Dell in an approximate 4"x 8" x 6" box and had internal plastic packaging that 'suspended' the drive in the center of the box. There have been a lot of bad reviews, yes. The issues with the drive momentarily freezing seems to be fixed. |

The coupon code expired on the 8th, anyway, so the deal is pretty much dead. |

Next time a deal on this drive gets posted, I just hope the "I don't have one of these, but they suck" crowd remembers all the positive feedback coming from actual owners in this thread. |

I bought a SATA cable from eBay for $.15 shipped, but it came from Hong Kong. You can probably either get it fast, or get it cheap, but not both. |

Just realized I need another SATA cable...dumb HP doesn;t have any extras inside. Any recommendations on best and cheapest and quickest place to get one? I ordered a hard drive from Frys.com about 9AM and got it 10AM the next day with ground shipping . I ordered one of these on Monday morning and I'll get it Wednesday which isn't bad at all for ground shipping. It's just coming from a couple of states away though. I'm hoping I don't have problems with this drive.... with all the negative reviews and all but I think it'll be fine. Great price . |

Good or bad, I'd rather hear from someone who's bought and used this drive than some of these other guys who've never even laid their fingers on one and simply repeat each other's trash talk. |

I have 8 of these running with a Highpoint RAID controller (7 x RAID5 + 1 hot spare). Not a single problem with any of them (been in service about a month or so). Had the newer (non-problematic) firmware on them when I received them. |
