I was using Acronis True Image 11 to back up Outlook as well as my PC. I just had a Mobile Me disaster with Outlook and needed to restore. 5 hours later I was restored to Nov. 2008. RuhRo! Luckily about a week ago I made an export to PST of my Outlook and recovered it and most of my mail from the Verizon server. It's good to leave mail on the server for a week! Not such a big fan of Acronis right about now. A friend recommended the Storage Craft program as a reliable back up. $80 ouchy. But does it work reliably? I don't know. I'll try the free trial and test out some failure scenarios.

Any idea why it did not work properly? One of the non-obvious quirks of True Image is that with incremental updates, it will eventually fill up the storage space, and you may not know that it has stopped making incremental updates. For this reason, I make nightly incremental updates to the secure zone, then start over each Saturday morning, AND make a fresh back-up to mirrored NDAS network drives.

Did you close Outlook when the backup was done? I remember reading that Outlook needed to closed in order to backup the current PST, at least in another backup program I was using. Not sure about Acronis.

I'll just say I used to be a fan of Acronis TI until it dicked me over too (in fact it was this version). I'd used earlier versions & loved the product.
Anyway, 2009 said it worked on Vista 64-bit, turns out it didn't -- the installation of Acronis True Image trashed my hard drive (I'm not talking about a non-functional backup, I mean the installation destroyed the Windows installation). Fortunately Windows system restore saved me (*never* thought I'd use it, or say that), and I contacted Acronis.... long story short, turns out I was beta tester for Vista x64! Idiots. They sent me a newer version that worked, but I'd already had a heart attack & a lot of frustration by then.
Also, these clowns refused a rebate that met all the criteria. For $15 it wasn't worth a 3rd round with them, they probably counted on that. So now I vote with my wallet, and I try to at least inform others... what they do is (naturally) up to them.
Between the rebate problems and the product trashing my hard drive, I'll never give my cash to Acronis again.
It runs fine on my Windows 7 RC. This is by far the best backup product I've ever used. I guess with all the FAR promotions, the 2010 version is coming out soon.
For me I do Outlook seperately using their (Acronis) Outlook backup. Outlook doesn't have to be closed. There are now over 1500 individual sections in the backup folder on my external. There's no way to tell it restore EVERYTHING and I think it only did the first big file, if I had to choose every segment and restore I'd have shot myself. I was lucky I did a PST, which I think I will regularly do and copy to Live Mesh or let Carbonite get it also. I'm having othere issues trying to get an externat eSATA drive to work. Thought I had it right and it "fell off" DURING a backup run using StorageCrafts utility. Argh! Another Acronis issue (I have 11) is I tell it to do my backups in the middle of the night. It just starts and goes whenever... like 5 minutes ago while the other program is backing up. Vista U64 BTW
I used to worry about keeping Outlook backed up and moving it to a new computer when I changed computers or re-formatted. What a hassle! I have now changed over to using Windows Live email (I have my other email address forward to the Windows Live address) and now I don't have to worry about all that. When I get a new computer and install Windows Live Mail, it automatically downloads all the messages to the PC. As a matter of fact, I have it installed on 3 computers right now and they all stay in sync automatically. So if I send an email on computer #1, that email shows up in the SENT folder of the other two computers. This is NOT the web based version that I'm referring to.
If you create a boot CD (or boot USB thumb drive) and do full image backups of your hard drive you will likely never have a problem with Acronis. Trying to backup from Windows while having other programs running is a lot more of a risk. You can do incremental and file by file backups from the boot media as well.
If you just need to back up mail, stop Outlook and copy off your .PST and .OST files yourself.
I have been using Acronis products for YEARS and about the only problem I ever have is trying to restore images from a really old box to something newer. Acronis is bad about removing old hardware drivers from the image boot media, so it can be a pain to find one version that works for both an old and a new box.
This deal is very rebate heavy (no rebates = you way over pay) and $15 of the rebate if a competitive product rebate (Ghost). Good deal if you own Ghost and eventually get your money back, not so goo otherwise.
I was using Ghost 2003 to clone Vista disks and I always had to fix the MBR so the cloned disk would boot properly. I bought ATI 10 (version 2007 I think) FAR a while back and was surprised to find that it clones a Vista disk perfectly with a USB enclosure. I haven't tried the clone feature with Win7 yet. Does anyone know if the clone disk feature is still available on the CD/DVD when you use it as the startup disk? I'm thinking about going by tonight an picking up a copy. Thanks.

How can you blame Acronis - sounds like it was self-inflicted.

when you say you have 11 / whats that version 11? 2009 fixes all these problems...
I cloned the Win7 disk in my Evo n620c using ATI 10 (version 2007) and got the message: Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. Status: 0xc0000225. Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessable.
It cloned a Win Vista Ultimate disk perfectly yesterday, so I suspect it can't handle Win7. Looks like I'll definitely need to get the newer version of True Image tomorrow.
By the way, I had to put the cloned disk in the Evo, then I used the Win7 install disk to repair it, restarted and made sure it worked. Then I put the cloned working Win7 disk in my Thinkpad 600E with 288MB RAM, turned it on, and Win7 started and found as many devices as it could without ever showing a BSOD (amazing to me). I dug up an old 3Com 3C3FEM556 combo card, found a driver, and now I am typing this reply on the TP600E. I don't have sound and there are some unknown devices but it works. Performance is not that great so I'll put the Win2K disk back in now.
Whether or not it supports a beta operating system is really a moot point. I've used Acronis for many years...not to do daily backups but to backup "fresh" installations of XP/Vista with essential software and drivers ready to go. Never had any troubles restoring...most recently restored my eee back to its factory state.
Anyone else having issues with accessing the fry's website?

I keep a 2nd hd in my system & backup to that one. In case I need to I can just swap them.
But I prefer FreeAgent for a software raid type backup. It comes with the Seagate usb hd's.

I don't need fancy backup, I don't even need backup increase updates. I use One PC only, and usually need fix sets of appications (office, visual studio). What I want is, after a fresh install, copy the whole drive into something external (USB drive, DVD, etc), and then uninstall the backup software, so in case of problem later, I can alway use the USB drive or DVD to refresh the whole PC back to this point quickly, so I don't have to reformat and install everything manually again.
Will Acronis do this job reliably? If not, what do you recommend?

Does anyone have a copy of the front page of the Symantec Ghost user manual for the $15 competitive upgrade rebate offer?
