Their new "splash free" model is $96 without much upgrade in features so this may be a good time to buy if you've been waiting for a great price on a Thermapen. Both register temperatures -58°F to 572°F (-50°C to 300°C) in under 4 seconds. Neither model is genuinely waterproof, despite the splash free label on the newer model. The biggest difference I see is the battery life-- 100 hours for the $74 model compared to 1,500 hours for the $96 model but as often as I cook this isn't a deal breaker for me!
I bought a less expensive CDN digital instant read thermometer for $35 that died 14 months later (despite a new battery) so I decided to bite the bullet and spend the extra dollars for a Thermapen this time around.

For those that really are into cooking, this is the thermometer to get. Believe me - its worth the money - and it's rarely on sale - good opportunity.

You are so right Housemaidsknee! I work full-time so it's challenging to find the time to cook. I first learned about temperature-based cooking methods by watching America's Test Kitchen on PBS. Thanks to this program I learned how to produce spectacular results every time. Sorry if I sound like a commercial--shows and recipes are available free following each episode at ATK's website. I initially bought a less expensive instant read thermometer to try out these recipes but once it died I had no hesitation about spending the money to buy a Thermapen this time around.

This review may help you decide if you really need one.
Shipped from Orem, Utah so no tax for me. FWIW, you get one last opportunity to review your order after providing credit card info which is where I verified shipping cost options (and tax applicability can be checked for your location).

Old:
Range: -58°F to 572°F (-50°C to 300°C)* Resolution: 1° C or F* Accuracy: ±1% ±1 digit
New:
Range: -58.0°F to 572.0°F (-49.9°C to 299.9°C) Resolution: 0.1°F/°C full range (user reconfigurable to 1.0°F/°C) Speed: From 75°F to 32°F: ≤ 3 seconds to within 1°F Accuracy: ±0.72°F (±0.4°C) from -58 to 392°F (-49.9 to 199.9°C), ±1.8°F (±1.0°C) from 392 to 572°F (200 to 299.9°C)
So a little faster and little more accurate and more water "resistant". You can also switch it from degrees F to C and back.
They also moved the display to make it easier to use (the way most folks grip the device). The new model is $96, so a $22 premium over the old model. One of the complaints I have heard of the original model is any water / liquid / food that gets on it can render it inoperable. I guess if you saved the $22 and then ruined your thermapen you might wish you had spent the extra money? Up to you to decide.
King Arthur Flour is the other place to get these in the US, and if you catch them on sale you can get a nice deal.
If you know someone in the UK who can order one for you, they are currently 46 British Pounds (about $75 US) plus shipping and VAT from the manufacturer / distributor in England. Linky-Poo . Sounds like the US distributor is marking them up for extra profit since (if they would sell you one) it looks to be cheaper to buy one from the UK even with shipping.
In any case, much better than a cheap, slow, and inaccurate thermometer. I have tried several of those "instant read" models and they are not.
I found a 10% coupon code for King Arthur Flour. They sell the new splash-proof Thermapen for $95.95 with free shipping. They only sell the red Thermapen, so if you are looking for another color you will have to buy from Thermoworks. They also have a promo to get a free pound cake mix with order over $60, this mix also is shipped free. So with the code C9MP6 the total delivered for the updated Thermapen and the pound cake mix is $86.36. So less than $5 more than the OP's clearance deal and you get the newer, faster model and a free pound cake mix.
It's the best. $75 for a thermometer may seem high, but when you have a $90 roast on the grill, you need something that works every time right out of the drawer. I have one, else I'd be all over this.

Thanks so much for the very comprehensive break down Dwynne!! I just tried it today and it came out to exactly how you broke it down. I saved $20 total because of your post since I was going to buy it at thermoworks with no discount and would have to pay shipping. Originally I was going to get blue, but to save $20 red is fine. It's a present for my mother-in-law and she's going to be so psyched. We were at Emeril's Chop Chop restaurant in Universal and she saw a chef working with it and specifically asked him what he was using.
