I quick ran in to Home Depot to get a part for a broken drain and saw they had the Propane weed wackers (straight and curved)reduced to $99 from $219. I know I should have a sku and brand but I was having a drain emergency so no time. If people saw these at the store they know which ones I mean.

I was having a drain emergency

Guess Lowes was the closest bathroom huh?

The box was pretty much green and white and I think it is the only brand they have that runs on a 1 lb propane bottle.

here's a lehr one

and a little info on a lehr propane model from about.com - link

lehr website

looks to be nationwide, too. plenty of curved in stock at the one i checked. running low on straight. lawn and garden dude i talked to said it was indeed Lehr, so you might want to add that to the title

Gasoline weed wackers exhaust a lot of pollution. These propane one are much better for the environment.

Good find, OP!

Damn! I just paid full price for one of these at Sears. :-P Yes, I've seen them there. They are the Lehrs. Lehr has a patent. They're the only people making these things. The only exception is Craftsman, but even those are re-branded Lehrs.

While I fail to see how this is eco-friendly (by simple math, something that is .033L running for 15min a week just doesn't create that much pollution). The real advantage is for us Northern types that only mow 7 months out of the year , propane doesn't have any of the storage issues that regular gasoline fuel does.

Also consider the waste produced by the fuel tanks for the propane (yes they are recyclable but think of the number of people who won't recycle them and the amount of waste the recycling plant will create).

Also note, these are a good deal heavier than normal weed wackers (16 pounds). Great price if you're in the market though.

I'm not much of a tree hugger but this is pretty cool. I will say the Indian will cry if he sees a river full of empty propane tanks.

Are these the models with the detachable shaft so you can use attachments?

alert mods

We have a straight shaft Lehr. I can honestly say, yes it is heavier, but it comes with a shoulder strap, and the propane cans make the Lehr much less of a bumpy rumble than gasoline. It isn't quite as annoying as our old one, and doesn't smell like bad exhaust.

I ma not sure how much these little propane tanks cost at Home Depot, but I just got a 6-pack from BJ's Wholesale Club for $17.99 for my portable grill.

You'd be surprised just how much they do pollute. The 2-cycle engines are especially bad.

agree the 2 cycle engines create more pollution while running than most newer cars! I'd jump on this asap as I have not seen them for sale anywhere else. However, I don't think all Home Depot have these in stock, so might be YMMV

Most the reviews on these propane trimmers are pretty good except for the weight!

no mixing gas/oil is good but how much power do these produce ?

FYI the research data in your link is over 15 years old and for the most part not relevant to modern 4 cycle engines or even 2 cycle engines produced in the past 5 years. Plus many states like CA now mandate strict emission standards for off-road 2/4 cycle engines. While no one is claiming 2/4cycle engines are completely eco-friendly they have come a long way in just a few years and for the most part the new higher end yard equipment using 4 cycle engines have emissions far less than your so-called eco-friendly Prius sitting in your driveway.
