Small tidbit. I've subscribed to a lot of magazines and just quit paying the "oh my god, your subscription is about to expire!!!" notices without a problem.
Every magazine except the economist handled this just fine. No pay, no more issues.
The economist sent me progressively threatening letters starting with a very high brow, white collar professional "have we forgotten something...?" note to claims that they'd sent me issues that I didnt pay for, which was not the case, to threats that they'd turn me over to a collection agency. I sent them several emails to no avail. It wasnt until I wrote them a snail mail letter that they p---ed off.
Unlike 99.92% of other magazines, they apparently require that you notify them in writing of your intent to discontinue service. Not sending payment to their resubscription demands is insufficient, and nobody on the other end of their email address bothers to do their job.

yes.. get it free online.. I think that is the best.. save the environment.. ha ha. are regarding the "progressively threatening letters " that is all a scam. I used to work for a software company and thru data mining we know that by the 5 or 6th threatening letter, most folks 50 to 60% will buckle and pay. ha ha. it is an optimized program. and once that is achieved, the remaining are abandoned.. ha ha.. just try it. the letters will definitely be -progressively threatening letters. u hit the hammer on the nail with that one.
I got in on this last time it came around. First set was 12 bucks for 12 issues, second and on was 24 for 12 issues. I still subscribe, as it's about as good as the 100 dollars per year deals that go on periodically, except I can cancel quickly.
I'd like to go online, but I just don't read it much online. Actually I'm pretty bad about reading it in general....so much information!

I have done 3 or 4 subs, for cheap, to The Economist and have never experienced the "threatening letters". They must figure you're in the "sucker" demographic somehow.
Thanks this magazine has been on my list for sometime. They do have a couple nag screens begging you to check the auto-renewal box, even offered a free pen drive (256mb with their name on it) if you would so be careful....otherwise a great deal.
The Economist is such a fantastic newspaper. Intelligent, clear, concise, and well laid out. You'll never read part of a story and then have to hunt for "page 63" or "A19" to finish the second half; everything is contiguous, in it's right and proper place!
FYI, you can also order the Economist using Delta airline miles. At 3,200 miles, that's a rough cash equivalent of $32. For a straight cash purchase, this $12 deal is excellent.

I agree. With Bloomberg Markets, The Economist is simply the best out there. I particularly appreciate how insightful it is.
I live in NYC and everyone reads the NY Post which is nothing but a Tabloid. I don't get it. Their views are shaped by crappy publications and brain-washing TV.

More importantly, that's $32 for 51 issues, or 63 cents per issue. A better deal, and if you like the magazine, 12 weeks (issues) will go by fast. If you have miles of course. If not go $12.
I was just reminded how much I like the magazine and went to re-up.
Thanks both OP and fpd.

I like the Economist because it's a lot more intelligent than most news magazines, especially its coverage of international affairs, science, and economics, and it doesn't censor swear words.
rolfecms said: I like the audio podcasts but those aren't free anymore. No time to read the magazine so makes no sense to get a hard copy. The audio edition is free for subscribers. This is another benefit of getting the mag.
So this is just a 3 month subscription? It is a weekly paper. In the Christmas -New Year weeks they do a doubly issue covering 2 weeks, with light subjects like this.
I agree, I've been listening to their audio version for a few months now. Time up renew my membership. Thanks OP. nycll said: rolfecms said: I like the audio podcasts but those aren't free anymore.
