I built my i7 920 using open box specials from Newegg and sale items from Microcenter. Final price for a 6GB RAM system : $600 (sans monitor).
The system is now overclocked to 3.6GHz and its very fast. I do a lot of video encoding and it helps.

The point I am trying to make is ... Dell / HP systems do not allow you to overclock - which is a bummer.

Thanks for that useless info. Contrary to that useless post the e9150t has 2 rear e-SATA ports and unlike Dell PCs they are on a seperate SATA controller from the main 6 port SATA controller.

So about $500 not counting the OS...right?

Not sure your open box items have more than 1 year warranty on them. But with Costco you have 2years warranty. So at least you have some kind of peace of mind my brother...

Oh ... I forgot to mention ... my custom i7 machine has a generic design case. So I can upgrade the components with no problems. Compare that to a Dell Precision desktop I have at home. Its motherboard is a mirror image of standard motherboards (i.e. reverse) ... so there is no way in hell I can upgrade that motherboard. The Power Supply was also Dell specific. Henceforth ... I will always buy open standard hardware.

is HP any better or any pluses compared to a Dell in the same price range, especially for media center type and expandability?

Not sure if the overclockers and gamers care, but this system has high fan noise. Sounds like the pwr supply fan. Just delivered from Costco/Fedex. Everything runs fine, but the noise is not much quieter than the the HP system it is replacing. That system was 5 years old, so the noise standards were lower. I think this "box" should run with less noise. The i7 CPU fan or the PS fan should give performance + quiet operation at this price.
