Sony 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player Re-certified for $171.99 at eCost.com

  • Dolby TrueHD
  • Bravia Sync
  • True 1080p output

This is a nice Blu-ray player for under $200. I like how it upscales your existing DVDs to 1080p. $171.99 with $15.59 for shipping.

I know some people are a little hesitant to buy re-certified products so I provided a link to the cheapest new Sony Blu-ray player I could find.

What is the difference in quality between blu-ray and an upconverting DVD player (philips DVP-5992 for example)? I have a new plasma and was wondering if it is worth it to switch to Blu-ray

If your talking Blu-ray quality as compared to DVD quailty then Blu-ray is better. The storage space on a Blu-ray disk is greater allowing for less loss of quality when recording from the master version of the film. Check out these screenshot comparisons. link

Yea, the quality is better on those pics. I guess the second question is Blu-ray discs are still more expensive than DVD's (on average) correct?

Generally that is correct as well, although some times you find cheap blu-ray discs on sale. As for the quality, its true that a blu-ray disc is a better quality than an up-converted dvd, but not by much. Especially if the Blu-ray disc is an older movie. I only buy blu-ray if the movie I want is not available or is as cheap as the regular dvd.

From 6ft & beyond, human eyes can't tell a difference between 1080p & 1080i.
Why spent your hard earned $$$ for B-ray?
