LA Residents only. Might work in surrounding areas, call and check.
I just got this advertisement in the mail (and called and ordered a few minutes ago).
Subscribe to the LA Times for 52 Weeks (1 Year), Thursday - Sunday service for $39 and they send you a $20 In-N-Out Burger gift card. So it's like getting 1 year for $20, can't beat that!
The gift card arrives in 4-6 weeks according to the rep.
Call 1-800-396-7841 and ask for the deal, no special codes needed. You just need a credit card to sign up.
Don't forget to cancel after the 52 weeks, otherwise they charge the "normal" rate, which is about $2.50 per week.
please change title, since its not really a weekly service... still a good deal

Just called and was referred to customer server (we're an existing customer). Agent told me that a promo code (starting with SV?) was required for this promotion.
Works like a charm, even for existing users! The correct code is SP4455. This will give it to you, as the op said, Thursday-Sunday for 52 weeks for $39 and they will send you a $20 In-and-Out gift card in 6-8 weeks, making this a total of $19 for a years worth of LA Times! WOOHOO! This is now 3 straight years of $20 annually!
BTW, I live in North San Diego County and they deliver no problem!

Thanks for sharing!!! I just called & it worked so easily. I live in Ventura County, so you don't need to live in LA to receive the deal.

does one know when this deal expires? I have a subscription now for $40 a year, but would like it when I renew.
My weekend subscription ends this month. The CSR offered to extend the subscription for $1.25 per week, which comes out to $65/year. I mentioned this promo code and got this deal. Thanks OP! Greenies for you.

I called today and was told that these codes ended January 1, 2010. It was a good try. They do have a promotion for 52 weeks, 7 days a week for $98.80 if you pay in advance and link the creit card.

It's my experience that no two LA Times representatives will (are able to) tell you the same story. As BTsaver's experience contradicts Jrabbit's, I'd not consider these dead until there are multiple reports claiming the same.
EDIT: A CSR told me these were invalid but did say similar active ones could be found in papers purchased on news stands. She did not say they were always available but did say the best ones are usually available on Sundays.
I just called but got shot down. The rep can't find match for 470702 nor SP4455. The post says "470702 / SP4455". Am I suppose to ask them to enter the entire thing, including the "/" ?
Hello, After subscribing, has anyone received 10 or 20 dollar gift card.

Richard9 - you need to find the phone number to the Los Angeles Times Corporate Offices. Then ask for the President's Office - they will redirect you to an executive level customer relations person. Otherwise, when you call the regular customer service - customer service people in the Phillipines take the call. You don't want this - The Los Angeles Filipino Customer Service people are trained to do anything they can - lie, make false promises, anything to get the customer off the phone.
And still... it gets worse... The Thursday through Sunday deal is a variety of a switch-and-bait scam. What The Los Angeles circulation department does is the following:
1. A consumer signs up for a 4-day Thursday through Sunday deal for $39.00. A $20 gift card to Ralphs, Target or any number of other companies is supposed to be sent to the new subscriber. 2. The gift card is never sent. 3. The Los Angeles Times sends the consumer a letter saying that the 4-day service has been upgraded for "FREE" to the full 7-day newspaper delivery service. 4. When the 1 year special subscription period ends (or even earlier for some Los Angeles Times Subscription rubes) The Los Angeles Times circulation department automatically continues the 7-day home delivery service. This time however the consumer pays FULL PRICE - no discounts of any kind. The consumer is not even notified about the upgraded price for the upgraded service... nice scam huh?
To be clear, The Los Angeles Times, once a prestigious publication has been hemorrhaging subscribers. During a 6 month period ending March 2009, it was reported the subscriber based slipped 6.5% to 7.5%. With lower subscription numbers, advertising rates plummet. New online content has destroyed the daily printed newspaper - and The Los Angeles Times is fighting back by ripping consumers off. It's just a matter of time before the paper will fold. In my opinion good riddance to bad rubbish.
Just add to IrateConsumer's post, do not ever let them talk you into signing up for their "EZ Pay". Once you are on EZ Pay, you will have no idea the price they charge you for your paper. If you do a vacation hold, you will never know if they credit the days you didn't get paper. All they do is send you a post card every few weeks with the amount cahrged to your credit card.
They do send you a postcard informing you of the new rates before they actually charge you, but not getting explicit consent is still pretty sneaky IMO. Then again, other services offer lower introductory rates, but I guess people get caught off guard because there's a year and change before the "higher" rates kick in. I just cancel it and renew w/ a different phone to get the "lower" rate.

I never received a postcard before my rates increased 5X.

They never sent me postcard about new rate before charge my card. However, I shouldn't complaint too much since I got the $20 in-n-out card last year even though I already getting their paper
I never used a real credit card for these deals. I generate a card number from online and limit the amount and time for the virtual card. But if you dispute the charge, they will give back your money. I had been in those situation once, and will never do that again. But if there's a deal, I still like LA times. So let me know if this 39 with 20 gift card still works or not.
So, here's how to do it: 1. Generate a virtual credit card number with time and total limit to $50, you can apply a citi card, they have that service. 2. Mark the date of expiration, before that, call in to cancel the service. BTW, since your generated number will expire before the sub expires, so they will try to contact you anyways. 3. enjoy your great deal. You don't have to read any news there, just check the ads and coupons
Edit: forgot to mention, LA Times, they will sell your phone number, believe me.

Boy, you must be really pissed off, I had been doing this kind of deal for the last ten years, from weekend sub to extended weekend..., from $50 something to $20 after gift card, and I got the gift cards every single time. As I said, I once got charged after the initial sub expired, but I called and wasted time talking with them and got my money back. Just do your own homework, give them a one time payment, and you will be safe and happy. I hate their practice also, but once you do as I suggested or use some fly points, it will just be fine. Best,
Thank you very much for your time and respone. I tried to call the 1800 LA times number. And contacted subscriber service. I had asked to speak to the supervisor. She mentioned 12 weeks before receiving a 20 dollar gift card. I have only been through 8 weeks. I will have to try with the coporate number.
Thanks for all your responses.

I didn't receive a postcard with the rate hike notice. I received a bill with the new rate listed - no explanation given whatsoever as to the increase.
I don't dispute lyeinyoureye's experience, mine was simply different. There are now a number of stories online regarding The Los Angeles Times fraudulent subscription practices.

I had experienced that before too. I got bill with ridiculous rate to extend service, I picked up phone immediately, and told them I never asked to extend the service, and I will only do that with the same rate as before which they won't possibly give me at all, and they canceled my service and refunded me. Don't give up, just play tough to dispute it. They were doing things like that for a long long time. Even if they got your real, unexpired credit card, you can dispute the charge through credit card company, you can go to BBB, you have a lot ways to do that, to reach a higher level, and get what you deserved. Look, I like their newspaper, so I always tried to tolerate their practice and just take the deal whenever available.

I concur with what FAMIR writes. It took my calling The Los Angeles Times Corporate number and speaking with executive customer relations before I received satisfaction.
Even then, I had the sense that the department handling fulfillment of my gift cards wanted to play "Lets Make A Deal." When I asked for the gift cards they owed me for previous subscription offers, the person on the end of the line balked. Again, I strongly worded my request saying, "The Los Angeles Times created the subscription deal; why should I be made to suffer just because they never fulfilled it?" I still paid for service, didn't I?
In all, I was owed 3 cards. As I renewed three times under the same offer. They had the information on record - so there was really no dispute. In fact, I had even paid the retail rate for my last subscription period, though I was told it had been refunded - The Los Angeles Times customer service person in the Phillipines had lied and never refunded the amount.
There is absolutely no reason why consumers have to accept lies and deceptive marketing practices from The Los Angeles Times. Unlike Directv or AT&T, The Los Angeles Times customer service in the United States eventually do cave, when confronted with the unvarnished truth. I believe that American employees recognize that Fillipino based customer service is hurting their company and taking away American jobs - to be specific - their jobs. Alienating the consumer is just going to erode interest in the newspaper even further.

I've been paying $52 per year for the last 3 years! Now they want $98 and this time I couldn't talk the Filipino gal into a similar rate. It's just not worth it for this rag. I was getting it for the ads which offset some of the $52 per year. The paper itself has been downsized physically and the quality of journalism is simply not what it once was. It's worth a buck a week max to laugh at the absurd editorials.
