The vast majority of people are still on a Docsis 2 system, so having a Docsis 3 router won't benefit them at all. Besides, this is $25. A docsis 3 router runs close to $100
I bought this from e-Cost ($30+10 ship) a few months back. It took a couple of phone calls to read some numbers off the modem and set it up. It's been working great and is officially compatible with Comcast.
I jumped on this yesterday, after getting in on the $19 Comcast deal. They gave me a 4 year old Scientific Atlantic modem that seems to be doing the job, but also seems like a piece of junk. After the 9th month, this will have paid for itself over the cost of renting.

+1
Yeah after looking up the specs on the RCA one I'm renting and finding out its ancient and DOCSIS 1.

Got mine last week. Works great with Comcast. Thanks OP!
Mine'll be here soon... Do I need to configure anything or call Comcast before I plug it in? Back in the day I remember some sort of process they had for allowing a modem on their network. Edit: Do'h! I just read blomywhistle's post above. Looks like I gotta give them a call?
I bought one of these modems about a year ago and it solved all my problems with Comcast's internet service. I was getting randomly disconnected, just for a short time, but long enough to boot me from whatever I was doing. The surfboard modems they lease are crap, at least in my experience. This modem has worked a lot better for me, and like the OP says, pays for itself in a year easily.

Price drop to $14.99 plus $7.56 shipping for me, minus a few cents for CashBack.

The Comcast rep I spoke to said something along the lines of, "ok, it's not on our list", then said she would call me back after taking down the serial number of both my old and new cable modems. She eventually got it running after calling back twice (I wasn't waiting more than 2 minutes after hanging up, and preferred this to being on hold). It sounds like Comcast has another process for connecting to modems not on their "list". I would just call back and insist that other Comcast customers have gotten this modem to work for them. Or keep asking for different reps if the one you're speaking with doesn't know how to connect the modem.

Even quicker now. Comcast bumped renting a modem up to $5 a month. Pays for itself in 5 months.
in 4 1. Still feels odd paying so much for shipping, but still cheaper than the original post, and anything I can do to pay Comcast less is a good thing

This link from the Comcast website lists the CM100 as compatible with their network.

Does anyone know the difference between the CM100 and CM100-RM? The CM100-RM is only $14.99 plus shipping from this? Thanks.

Edited : I checked the actual modem and it has CM-100 writen over it so I think my hunch that -RM means refurbished is correct and that is the only difference.

Thanks luvGnuLinux. Ordered refurbished one. Hopefully it lasts long since the rental one is now $5/month from Comcast.
I got one of these for $19.95 and it could not have been any easier. First I connected it to my cable. Then I connected my notebook directly to the cable modem, not routed through a router. A Comcast box popped up asking if I was a Comcast Tech or a customer. I clicked customer, put in my account number, and away I went. Connected the router and everything was good. I put my old modem, which I own, on a shelf for backup. Yesterday I was streaming HD from Netflix to my Samsung blu-ray player and it worked excellent. While it isn't Docis 3, it is 2, which is good enough for almost everyone but high power users. For this price it is a no brainer. Beats paying rental fees to Comcast.
Solid post OP. Green for you. I've been debating about switching to cable modem service as AT&T's DSL has been frustratingly slow in my neighborhood (max of 2.6 M service and claim they can't offer me higher).
