And we only need to sign a 6 months contract, right? If so, not bad to get a new phone.

I dunno whether these deals are good or not. The Moto Krave for Verizon that I've looked at in the past is the same price it's always been -- free for new contracts, $50 for people on existing contracts.

Where did you get this info ?

That was probably supposed to be a joke.

I agree that Amazon has had a wireless store for years and prices don't appear to have dropped suddenly.

The Fuze is $74.99 as an upgrade. Would love to jump on this, but the data plan requirement kills the deal for me.

What's odd is that when I go to AT&T and try to upgrade, I'm told that despite the fact that there will be an activation fee charged and an activation of the data plan is necessary, I can cancel it at any time. So does that mean I can get this phone, sign up for the data plan for one day and then cancel it?

But now they have an easier web address http://wireless.amazon.com

I guess the 'new' part is that you don't have to deal with any rebates (which also means no more making money after rebates (hmmm... now that I think about it, I haven't seen those $ -75 final price offers in a while)

That's not a joke. If you click on "Click here to read equipment discount terms and conditions" on any phone, you will see the following as an example:

The purchase price of your device reflects an equipment discount of $xxx per device that has been provided to you by AmazonWireless based on your agreement to (a) activate a new, or extend an existing, line of service in connection with this device, and (b) maintain this service with the selected rate plan in good standing for a minimum of 181 consecutive days.

By accepting this equipment discount, you agree that for a period of 181 days after your new equipment is activated, you will not:

* disconnect this line of service
* change your service plan to one with a lower monthly rate (e.g.: from $59.99 to $29.99)
* cancel required plan options such as BlackBerry or PDA/Smartphone data features
* fail to pay your balance due each month

If you do any of the above you will be subject to additional charges by AmazonWireless of up to $xxx per device, plus applicable taxes.

This only means that along with the 1/2 year contract with Verizon/ATT/TMobile, you have another contract which would last for the first 181 days with Amazon.

not so fast my friends. IT IS A 2 YEAR CONTRACT....

this is from FAQ

Do I have to sign a contract to buy my phone?
Yes. Currently, all phones on AmazonWireless are tied to a two-year contract with a wireless carrier, but we'll soon add the ability for you to purchase a phone without a plan. So if you've lost or damaged your current phone, please check back shortly for this option (or visit our current cell phone store at Amazon.com to buy a phone without service today).

I did a search and didn't see anything like this, for a penny these are awesome deals... And the e-mail I got from Amazon had this as the Subject Line: Introducing AmazonWireless.com--Amazon's New Cell Phone Store

While they may have offered cell phones prior to this, I believe this to be something different...

I've used the current family plan (2 years contrast) for 6 months, do I have to extend "a period of 181 days" to get the new phone? The price is so attractive

read the faq's... you need to be eligible for an upgrade. You most definitely are not up for an upgrade if you are only 6months into a 24month contract.

If I remember correctly the way it usually works is that you still have a 2 year contract, where if you cancel you'll get charged the Early termination fee by the network, but if you cancel within the first 6 months you'll also get charged the full price of the phone by whoever you bought it from.

I'm on a family plan and when I get to the checkout page it says "keep existing plan". I don't see anywhere that I am extending my current contract (even though I know it must be there). What am I missing?

oops...

Guys, I have taken BB 8900 from Amazon Wireless. Awesome service. I did not like the piece (the keyborad illuminzation) and asked for replacement. promptly with no questions asked, I got a new piece and then sent back the first one. There are few conditions for new 2 yr contract, which are clearly given in their site. For you all, I got this phone for $0.01. My math worked this way.
If I buy same phone from AT&T without a data plan, I have to pay $250. But, if I take it from Amazon with the data plan for $0.01, I will pay 6*$30 (data plan rate) = $180 for 181 days and also I get to use the data plan for 181 days. I will be out of Amazon contract terms after 181 days then I get to keep this phone free.
Is it not great.

I have read everything but I'm still not 100% sure of something. If I get a phone from them (let's say a penny phone). Am I required to stay under contract for *ONLY* 6 months? That's the part I thought I knew the answer to but a few people have posted conflicting messaging saying that the 6 month contract is with Amazon yet I'm still committed to a 2-year contract with Verizon or AT&T. What I'm afraid of here is the length of the contract. So does anyone know for sure if I am ONLY under contract for 6 months?

exactly what I'm concerning...They didn't say things very clear. I'm just waiting

What I read is that there are 2 separate contracts: a 6 month contract with Amazon and a 24 month contract with the cell phone carrier. If you break your contract within 6 months, then you must pay a penalty to both Amazon and the carrier. Between 6 and 24 months, you pay the penalty to only the carrier.

Well if that's true then this isn't that great of a deal. If I am required to commit to a 2-year contract then I may as well get the phone I really want which is a Palm Pre. What would be bad is to get a "half measure" phone that you weren't thrilled with then be stuck with it for 2 whole years (which, in my opinion is a VERY long time to be stuck under a contract).

By the way, does anyone know of any discounts for Verizon wireless? I'm thinking about signing up with them. On the order confirmation page there is a PROMO CODE box so that's why I'm asking.

Nothing's ever a good deal if it isn't for the item you really want.

In my case, I actually wanted an HTC Fuze anyway, and while I'm not all that happy with the terms here, it's still a better deal than buying one through AT&T for $299, because they still require a 2 year contract. (I don't care about the phone being refurbished, every refurbished product I've ever bought has been indistinguishable from new.) Even at the $75 upgrade price plus six months of the data plan, that's about $255, but as someone else said, I get to use the data plan for six months whereas I wouldn't if I just took the $299 phone from AT&T and didn't get the plan.

I'm like this close to pulling the trigger on this, literally am at the checkout screen, but the fact that Amazon charges tax to New York always makes me want to cancel my order in disgust. That $6 is seriously the only thing that's holding me up, just on principle.

btw the other really annoying thing about the new Amazon wireless "store" is that you can't add items to your order from elsewhere in the store anymore. I swear I did this the last time I bought a phone from them; I ordered a case at the same time. I wanted a screen protector for my Fuze but now I have to get it separately and pay separate shipping, which probably means I just won't order it from them (especially with the tax!).

Yeah, it is.

I just upgraded to a pair of LG Xenon phones for myself and my sister for $120 or so after rebate, with the standard 2 year contract. It seems like Amazon doesn't require you to do anything above and beyond what AT&T does anyway.

I would have liked that Black Xenon phone, it didnt exist at the AT&T store.

If you're buying a PDA phone, Amazon'll want you to add on the 30 dollar data plan, with no changes for the 181 days.

Many of these phones are also available from WalMart.com for a similar price, with the option of not tacking on the 30 dollar data plan (but they still require you to keep the same plan for 181 days). I'm not certain how this directly influences the cost in the end, but if you're in the market, do check it out. I tried adding a Nokia e71 to my cart at both sites and this is what happened; that said, I didn't actually check out.

I'm in the market for a new phone. I want basic internet capabilities (e-mail and web browsing), but I don't want a $30/month smartphone data plan. Any recommendations for phones with good e-mail (preferably gmail) and web browsing with a cheaper data plan (like $10/month)? Thanks.

While you can opt out of the data plan, you lose the discount.

Indeed, I thought this might be true. I looked more into the WalMart side and this is what the discount terms look like:

$99.99 LetsTalk instant discount
Purchase select AT&T phones from LetsTalk.com or any of our affiliated partners and retailers online or through our customer service department and receive a $99.99 instant discount when you activate new AT&T service on a service plan of $49.99 per month or more and agree to a two (2) year service agreement.

So while this is absolutely true for the Amazon sale (it was covered earlier in the thread), this isn't necessary true for the WalMart sale (which seems to be actually someone else's promotion).

Thanks for making me verify and justify my claims. (: Naturally, though, this depends on which phone you're getting (and how much discount) and the provider. The example I used was the one I was concerned about, the Nokia e71x.

(Edit: Formatting, since I haven't posted on FW much before!)

The price at Amazon is much lower for new users than for existing users (So-called "Upgrade")

I currently have AT&T Wireless and am out of contract already (I am on month by month). I want to get one of those "Penny phones" which will cost more for if I choose "upgrade" rather than "new line".

Will the followings allow me to keep my existing ATT number while still take advantage of the new phone prices that are available for new customers "penny"?

1) Keep my current line active (while still Out of contract, OOC)
2) Buy the new desired ATT phone and setup a totally separate account and 2-year contract with a new ATT number (so to take advantage of the new account and new contract pricing).
3) Get a new Tmobile prepaid phone or get a Verizon phone (in 30 day trial period)
4) Port the OOC ATT (my current ATT number that I want to keep) to the Tmobile prepaid phone (or the Verizon line) and cancel the current ATT OOC line at the same time
5) Port the number from Tmobile or Verizon back to new ATT line/phone
6) Return and cancel the Verizon line

Anyone has done this in the past? Thanks.

What I have heard you can do if you have a family plan and want to upgrade, but haven't tried myself so just hearsay, is buy the phone as a new customer with a new individual account. Then, go to ATT and merge your phone to your family plan. They will then add that family phone with the same contract time as the new account, but will only charge the additional 9.99 for an added line every month. This will allow you to get the new customer discount on the phone. Maybe someone who has done this can elaborate...
