I bought this laptop from costco for $600. This is a 14" that weight 4.2lbs and it really has an 8hr battery life. this is a great laptop if you want a super light laptop with a long battery life.

Just so everyone knows, the newer, (slightly) bigger brother is also on sale for $50 more at Office Depot - here
Only differences I can tell is the 4gb ram and the Core 2 Solo processor (not ULV).
IIRC, the Core 2 Solo's are infact a part of Intel's ULV platform. So the only difference between the OP's config and yours in the RAM (3GB vs 4GB) and the clock speed (1.3Ghz vs 1.4Ghz). Basically you are paying $50 more for a 1GB and 100Mhz upgrade.
Edit: OP's config has a processor with 2MB cache while the Core 2 Solo SU 3500 has 3MB. This will actually make a reasonable difference in performance.
Okay. There is more to this deal comparison. I have been looking at the Acer Timelines for a while now. The OM config is the same as what is at Costco now for $549: SU2700, 3GB and Vista Premium. The OD config is the same as what Staples has: SU3500, 4GB and Vista Premium 64-bit. I prefer the hardware of the latter config. However, I do not like Vista 64-bit; too many compatibility headaches. So at this point, I'm not buying either config.

Specifically, what are the compatibility issues on the 64bit? I have the Gateway with the 64bit and it has not given me any trouble to this point, after about a month's use. Only one software gave me a bit of problem, but it was fixed. What else should I be looking out for? I have my eye on the one at OD for my spouse. Come to think about it, could these be upgraded from Vista to W7 and then the compatibility problem goes away?

Been doing some research on the acer timeline vs asus netbooks. looking for something light/thin and long battery life. Doesn't the Intel Pentium Processor SU2700 help keep the battery life longer than the Core 2 Solor model?
you can get this deal cheaper (depending on how long the Bing.com 12.1% Cash Back if alive for) since most likey majority of us will need to pay sales tax from Office Max.
any deals on the 13.3" model? at fry's they were the same price as the 14"

i just got this laptop last week at Staples for around $550 and have to say it is really sluggish with Vista 64-bit even with 4GB of RAM. I am keeping my fingers crossed that Windows 7 64-bit will run much better when it comes out. In the meantime I am considering trying Ubuntu or Jolicloud on it since Vista is running so bad.
The laptop itself is really nice. Super light weight and thin and does not get hot at all. The only complaint I have with this besides the performance is the trackpad buttons. The buttons are hard to press similar to the Asus 1000HA Netbook. Otherwise it is the best Acer I've ever seen.
There are some applications that rely on memory and/or data mapping that do not have a 64bit version (like MS Groove, some printers drivers, virtual drives, USB devices, etc.). The problem is not the OS. It is how the two versions map (or point to) where data is stored (or addressed). The older software does not have the code written in such a way to allow for using 64bit, and sometimes Vista at all.
If you have applications and device drivers written within the last 18 months, there should be no compatibility issues.

This is a fantastic notebook (I'm writing this response on it now). I got it about a month ago from Fry's for $599. Battery life is as advertised and it's perfect for on the go business use. Highly recommend for those who don't need something for gaming or HD video.

adnj: Thanks. Seems to not be a huge problem then.
Hey OP, if you bought it recently from Costco (within the last 90 days) ask for a 50 dollar refund, it's cheaper now. I bought mine about 15 days ago and they gave me my money back.
First let me say that I LOVE my 15" Timeline. It more or less lives up to its promise. Fairly capable and very mobile (~5 hrs/charge, light, thin) and relatively cheap. Now with that said...
IMHO Buy this at Costco for $549.
Hear me out. I've read ALOT of mixed reviews which boils down to this: some units are awesome, light and fast and others suck, massive lag on even minor computing tasks.
The extra 50 bucks is worth the peace of mind I get. I got it at Costco for its 90 day (vs. 15 days at OD) return period just in case I was unlucky and bought the ones that suck. and an extra one year warranty (for a total of 2 years). You might think warranties are no big deal, so did I -- until my Toshiba Laptop recently died out of warranty.
Nice price. But as others have mentioned the Timeline series with this particular processor are notoriously slow. The System 7 upgrade, due late October 22nd, should bring this machine up to a reasonable performance level.
Personally, I'm waiting for the 11.6" Timeline 1810T. It comes with a slightly faster processor and is to be available in a couple weeks. If the price is under $600.

Thanks, I didn't even know costco had a price guarantee. some of the reviews were pretty mixed and I must have been one of the lucky ones. Mines is fast and a lot better than my last lappy, a HP core 2 duo. I hated that laptop and I love this one.

Isn't Core 2 Solo a single core and Pentium SU2700 a dual core?

Damn, still 14". If this was 12" and under $600, I'd be all over it.

Agreed, this is a great laptop. Costco doesn't officially have a price guarantee, it just depends on the CSR you get. Sometimes they're very accommodating or not. If the CSR won't refund you, try calling again. My CSR didn't sound happy returning the $52 to me but she did it anyways. Another option is to return and rebuy if all else fails, ty 90 day unconditional money back .
dealme05: The U2700 is a Pentium Core Solo (some say its a Core 2 solo) Processor with a 2 mb L2 cache at 1.3 ghz.
The U3500 has an extra 100 mhz, an extra 1 mb on its L2 cache and a lower TDP (max power consumption). The U2700 has a TDP of 10 watts and the U3500 a TDP of 5.5 watts.
Real world, I don't know how much more battery life that would yield but the U3500 is faster and consumes less power. Anyways, I wish they put the 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SU9400 in a larger form factor than the 13.3" =\
mantalcore: They have the 13.3", which is 3.5 pounds and 1.1" thick on amazon with the U2700 for 582 free ship. Newegg has the 13.3" with the U9400 (a 1.4 ghz Core 2 Duo) and a 80 gb SSD for 799 + shipping and tax.
Would make a decent Hackintosh. I'm using a Sony Vaio I got 3 1/2 years ago and it has the intel core solo version 1. I must say it's pretty darn great, have not really noticed the need for anything new!
For those of you looking at the 13.3" Timeline, just be aware it does not have a DVD or optical drive. The 14" and 15" models do come with a DVD burner.

Thanks for all the info. What about the U9400 & the other two above- are they also 10watt processors?
Well compared to 25w & especially 37w or whatever the T intels were I've had in 13.3" cases, even 10w is awesome. I think I'll forget about 5w & probably want the most capable of the 10w processors. Thanks for the information.

wow thanks, i thought i saw a dvd drive on the 13.3 at frys but i was probably mistaken, it was probably a 14"
anyone who has this 14 or 13.3, can you confirm if it can do 720p or even better 1080p mkv's?
I saw a forum that said the acer 751 netbook could handle 720p, but I went to costco and loaded up a 720p mkv along with a portable VLC program, and it stuttered like crazy.

I have been running Vista 64 for two years now and have a bunch of legacy hardware (printer, scanner, etc.) that works just fine. No issues with software either. Also running Windows 7 64 bit on a laptop just fine.

I'd really like to hear the answer to this question. It would be terrible if this 'information' is totally heresay but is being repeated and driving people to make poorly informed decisions.

Buyers should compare this to the AS3810, which is almost identical specs except it comes with 4G of RAM and no optical drive making it much lighter and thinner.

AS3810 is 13.3". This is 14.1"
I am no expert but I have been in the market for a cheap lightweight for a few months. I think this is definitely the lightest with the screensize in this price range.

hmmppphh.. i didn't know that these timelines where such a big deal... THE SHACK has both 14 and 15 versions. I'll stop by one of them and try a 720p 1080p BD rips and see how well they hold up. the ACER aspire one deal breaker for me was they couldn't handle 720p reliable.

They always run better that way. I wonder if all the complaints of this running slowly is by those who didn't remove those crapwares.

Amazon has both the 13.3" AS3810TZ-4880 and the 14.1" AS4810-4011 priced at $549 total cost, which works out cheaper if you live is California (i.e. $549 vs $554).
back on sale for $499. at OM. i purchased from Amazon for $535 so slightly cheaper after tax, but had I known, I would have gotten from here OM so that I could more easily return it, if necessary.
