Thanks, OP!

I think this deal is good for being able to customize. But if you are looking for a basic with webcam and 250G HDD, you can get the Lenovo G550 - 29582CU for 399 plus free ship. link: http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/942259?highlight_key=y&keyword1=G550. or search for G550.

you really shouldnt compare a thinkpad with a generic Lenovo laptop; its like comparing a BMW to a Hyundai =P

I would advise staying away from the T400 model. A company I support just issued out hundreds of these laptops and had many hardware issues. If you like go with the IBM look for a diffrent model such as the T-61 or newer.

You do know that T400 IS the newer model for the T61 right?

Out dated IT support? Come on, T400 has come out for a long time, T400s come out too. What kind of support you provide?
I think still not bad if most of us are already willing to pay between $500 and $600 for cheaper brands.

Honestly, no. It does make a difference but for the majority of tasks it won't be a big deal. In the end what minimal improvement in speed you might notice would be offset by the possible noise and decrease in power (faster drives consume more power, if only by a fraction - in most cases anyhow).
You also get a free (well, a penny) privacy filter with the purchase of a T400 or T500. Fortunately, that one is selected by default.
Pretty stupid that they do not auto-select the 250gb and webcam upgrades. I just ordered my son a T500 with the discrete graphics.

I think so, because it's the smaller things that always seem to make the laptop feel "sluggish." Copying files over to watch movies, downloading and transferring, and even the occasional game or so (even if you don't plan on using it to game, you might find yourself doing it once in a while!) makes the difference noticeable. If the price premium is more than $20-30, I wouldn't do it (or if the space difference for the same price is 100 gigs or so, i also wouldn't do it), but it makes a difference.
Unfortunately, the price difference is higher than that. It's $157 to upgrade from the 5400rpm 250gb drive to a 7200rpm 320gb drive (and that is $40 more than the 5400rpm 320gb model).

Yikes, I would not do that upgrade then. It'd be way cheaper (and very easy) to do it on your own. Buy the drive (the 500gb scorpio blue from WD is a great drive) and install it on your own. It can be found for about $100.
Yes, it appears the HDD pricing is still based on the 160gb default, not the free upgrade to 250gb.
Meanwhile I got a shipping notice last week, 2 days after ordering, which I thought was quite impressive. I did not see a tracking # online so I decided to call. I was told that it was the privacy filter which had shipped, the Thinkpad was still waiting. I asked how long it would be (since the original ship date was 8/17) and the rep put me on hold and checked with production and came back and said something about 15 business days. Given that I was told 11 when I placed the order (and I need it then), I *hope* that is not correct!
No, the load time off a cold boot of ms word or an internet browser might be a second slower if that. But you wouldn't even be able to tell a difference unless you were doing hard drive intensive activities like transfering/accessing large files. Also, higher density platters have shorter seek times.. So a 320 gb 5200 rpm drive would probably perform the same as a 120gb 7200 rpm drive.
