REI's Super Clearance sale is when REI and REI-outlet have 50% off all items that end in .83 - this is online and in B&M
Their next super clearance will start on 8/28 through 9/07. B&M stores usually open at 10am but the sale usually starts online at 12 midnight pst though last super sale started the day before. It seems REI online does it differently every time.
They do a super clearance sale twice a year and these are the best sales that REI has. Marked down items will sell out FAST!
Sale Pricing: Most items are already marked 20-60% off before they take an additional 50% off the discounted price. This additional 50% off either comes off when you put the item in your cart or has already been off the price that you see for the item on the item page. They have done it differently depending on the sale. For example: the spring 07 sale 50% was taken off on the item's page, while the fall 2006 took off 50% in the cart. (Edit on pricing) - it is only on items ending in .83, but the items that end in .83 will change before and during the sale.
Sale Timing: The exact start times are not exactly when REI has said in the past. They seem to be using different methods of marking down the gear for the sale. For example for the spring 2007 sale REI said that it would begin on Feb 12 but then it began on Feb 9. REI said the fall 2007 sale would start Aug 24 but then they started manually marking down the items on Aug 23.
Best shopping techniques: 1. Load up your cart with items that end in .83 before the sale begins. Then check the prices of the items in your cart when the sale begins. 2. They also add many new items through the sale so keep checking back during the sale 3. To keep items in the cart from disappearing while you are looking around: 1) place several small orders, or 2) move the order to the checkout process. This in the past has seemed to hold your items and you could still add items using anther browser tab. 4. "Be prepared for cancellation / OOS emails. Seriously, REI doesn't update the stock on their web page in real time (only once every 30 min or so), which usually leads to some disappointment during this sale." Although sometimes they will issue a 20% coupon to say sorry.
Remember that Ship to Store is free with REI and they have 100% satisfaction guarantee
Thanks for posting this! It is usually a killer sale. For the record, since 2007, items ending is .83 (and only .83) were be reduced by an additional 50% sometime the day before the sale began. If you are looking at the prices after the sale begins, you are already seeing the discounted price. Most items total out at about 70% off.
i don't think there's a reason to be dissing this sale three days before it even starts. historically you can't guarantee that everything with an '83' on it today will be part of the sale, or that they will or won't add hundreds of items between now and then to be part of the sale. i've always found at least a few things worth snagging in the sale...some years more than others, but there are always good deals to be had. i expect this year to be no different.
does anyone know precisely when the sale will start online? i think in prior years they were a bit sloppy about timing, but i work early hours out here on the west coast so need to know if i have to stay up late to access the beginning of the sale. i think REI is also west coast based but that doesn't mean 1201pm pdt is when the sale starts...
Was cruising through my local REI Wednesday at lunchtime looking for interesting .83 items and didn't find too much. Most of the items marked clearance were .93 and therefore not SuperClearance eligible. However, several store employees were re-pricing to xx.83 and moving some items (tote bags and fashionable "girly" items--stuff not of interest to me). I did catch part of a conversation of an employee with one of the managers that more re-pricing will be happening. I guess I will cruise through again Thursday evening.
I have a feeling that this sale may not be as fruitful since the economic downturn has been going on for over a year now. Markdowns on seasonal clothing have been earlier and it appears that not as much stock has been kept on hand in the stores as in better times. While there was a pretty good selection of winter items back at the last superclearance sale in February, I attribute that to mild winter weather in my part of the country.
These have been up for a few weeks, but I haven't seen many new items added during that time. Hopefully today they will add more items for the sale. Enjoy.
No, that is REI's garage sale, where they sell used and returned products at steep discounts. Those sales are usually a zoo if you go right when they open. Looks like its next week, while the super clearance sale is this Friday. The garage sale dates are usually store specific, but you can definitely find good deals there if you are ok with slightly used equipment and aren't real particular about a certain brand or model.
The Seattle flagship store used to do garage sales, but it got to be so crazy that they started requiring people to buy tickets to get admitted to control the number of people. I haven't heard anything lately if they still have that sale or not. Although if you go down to the first floor where the rental equipment is, they generally have a few racks of used gear for sale year round.
The sale should be starting in the next few minutes. Remember, stuff ending in .83 will be discounted an additional 50% before the sale starts so final discounts will be in the 70% to 80% range.
i didn't think they started until late tonight....if they start early that would be terrific! just went back to the site. it looks like they have items loaded in there, but prices haven't changed yet. i have stuff in my cart from the '83' group, we'll see if/when they change in price.
as usual the REI sale is a bit of a mess. just spoke to someone at REI, and officially they start the sale at 1201pm pdt tonight. they are still loading stuff into the links, but my latest check didn't show any prices changed yet. i guess i'll have to be patient!! midnight is late for me, time for a late night diet coke i guess.....
