Nice price for decent shelves. I bought them last week when they were 30% off. I was going to do a return/rebuy today, but I noticed Staples raised the regular price up 10 bucks from last week, so the margin of savings between 30% off 49.99 and 50% off 59.99 is 5 bucks per shelf.
These definitely aren't great for hardcover books. With just particle board and a cardboard backing, these things start to buckle and don't last very well in a move. You get what you pay for... for a dorm or child's bedroom, or for filing papers, these are ok.

We go through this every time - ok, they are not rock sturdy, however it is not right to say they are not ok for books. They have held up pretty good for me and they are filled with books. Here is how much they bend.

I just wish they were 36" wide instead of 28". Price isn't that bad for what you get.

If you flip the shelf over, the books should flatten the shelf out.
I may have to jump on this - was just cleaning out the garage and came across a box full of my books and notes from college - don't want to dump them, and a bookshelf in the basement would solve my problem!
There's also $25 off $75 from ejunkie (sorry can't link this per FW policy) netting you three 5-shelf bookcases for $65+tax shipped or one-of-each + small filler (5/3/2) for $50+tax shipped.

you are stacking books...instead of lining them up
Nuts, I only just noticed this post after deciding two days ago to rearrange my bedroom. Sorry to bump an expired deal like this, but does anyone know how often Staples has sales on their bookcases? I looked through this and next week's fliers, but didn't see anything on the Staples brand bookcases. Speaking of wear, I think I actually have one of them from a few years back, and it works fine. I have my hardcover textbooks (from law school, these are heavy ones) lined up on one of the shelves, and while there's significant bowing, there is no sign of actual cracking. I may actually just flip the shelves over when I rearrange everything.

I was tracking them for a while and they seemed to go on sale every 2-3 months. The (I would say small) bend does not seem to take long to develop, but stays the same over the years if you don't add more weight. However, I am not sure if flipping the shelves and doing the opposite bend would be good for the structural integrity of the shelves.
In case anyone's interested, I've been glancing at the weekly ad previews diligently lately, and it looks like these bookcases are going to be 50% off again next week (10/4-10/10). I guess the in-store prices are $39.99 to $59.99 now, as the preview says the sale prices are $19.99 to $29.99.
