FL Residents Renew Your Auto Tags NOW and Save 50%+ The State of Florida is jacking up its drivers license and license plate fees (i.e. taxes) by over 50% in many cases beginning Sept. 1 (and, of course, the state employees will get no raises again this year). At the DMV today the clerk urged to tell FAT WALLET friends to hurry in to renew before the new fees take effect. She said that anyone that has tags up for renewal in Sept, Oct, and Nov can renew now at the old rates. (Those up for renewal in December or later cannot renew this far in advance...Sorry.) And for icing on the cake you can lock in the old rate for 2 years by paying for both years up front. Hurry there are only 2 weeks left. Here is a sampling of the hike in fees. (Please no hating by those in other states who already pay much, much more than we do....we already know it.)

yeah, they just announced the increases, so wasn't much notice to pay for two years in April. good deal for those lucky enough to have their tags renew Sep-Nov this year.

I would call and see if I could renew early (and for the 2 years if possible.)
I just renewed in July and went with the 2 yrear option.
I don't think you can. He could have renewed for 2 years in April, but if he paid for just one year, not sure he can go back and add the second year in now to save the difference.
The increase in fees is broader than my aunt Nancy's rear-end. Here's the link http://www.flhsmv.gov/MotoristFees.htm#vehicles It's fairly comprehensive. From goat trucks to Class E renewals, from Retro Reflective Material fees to crash reports.
It's about time they raised fees: "Question: Didn’t the State just raise these fees? Answer: No. The majority of the fees have not been adjusted in many years. For example, original and renewal driver license costs (on an annual basis) have not increased since 1989 (20 years); the majority of motor vehicle registration fees have not increased since 1983 (26 years); and most title fees have not increased since 1985 (24 years)."

Your point is? Shouldn't government be looking for ways to REDUCE it's cost footprint to "we the people"? Sure, there's inflation, etc., but a registration fee is (in most states) just a cash cow with no real benefit to the citizenry. The overhead alone to run the program (salaries, making the plates, mailing costs, IT infrastructure) eats up most of the fee, and what little is left over usually ends up in the general fund and subsequently squandered on yet more overhead...
