OK, I will move-out to another house so I was looking for a rental truck.

Budget Truck has this promotion which is great. The trick:

  • Select a pick-up/drop-off date "other than" Sunday-Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday, so basically you are renting the truck on weekend.
  • Don't enter any coupon code yet.
  • On the next page, it will say: "Flexible schedule? Save up to $30.00." Select Sunday, Monday or Tuesday...
  • Next, on the pick-up/drop-off hours selection page, try to enter a coupon code. It will get you to the front page, now enter MVG43 as the coupon code.
  • See the new price!

Can't seem to get the discount to work.

Edit: Got it!

Watch out for Budget and getting your deposit back. I had a heck of a time getting my deposit refunded after a one-way trip this summer. Not sure why it was such a hassle, but it took 4 calls and even the credit card company to step in after 3 months of waiting for the refund. I really wanted to rent another truck, but after that experience, I'll have to go back to the higher priced U-Haul trucks.

Another thing, most of the time you will be required to purchase their insurance since it is considered a commerical vehicle and your normal auto insurance company will not cover the rental.

go to a local buget store and talk to them, many times you will get the $/mile and $/day down a bit. we use budget sometimes and we get a discounted rate of .29 per mile. i think each budget location is owned individually so u can bargain.

I have a long move coming up and have investigated a lot of options. Budget is the cheapest one way option followed by Penske. Uhaul is the most expensive but their trucks can handle 2,000 pounds more weight. Uhaul turned me off because their advertised truck sizes are misleading. The inside dimensions count a little cubbie hole above the cab which is kind of worthless. Now if you are doing a local move Ryder is the cheapest. They don't allow one way but give you 500 miles for free and a 16' truck is less than $60 a day if you rent online.

I still need to go and investigate the insurance issue like the previous poster mentioned. I will be having a family member driving the truck and I don't want to get financially wrecked if they have a wreck

Check out consumerist.com for a recent story on rental trucks.

The comments give Budget a GREAT rep! (boo/hiss to Ryder and U-Haul)

Make sure you select not a weekend day when entering the coupon

I'm not a fan of budget...

I had a couple moves in the area for different family m embers. Budget's basic insurance that was required cost more then the enhanced up sell that ryder offered me. They will rip you off any chance they get.

I agree, and Ryder gives you 500 miles to use also.

I used Penske, which was great. I got a truck from near chicago to go to Miami and it was $650 with unlimited miles.

Gas is freakin expensive to fill this thing up and you need to talk to a rep to get it that low. You cant get it online or anywhere else, so if you call the 1800 number you will have to talk them down and most of the time they will do it.

I doubt budget compares to penske in long moves. I just re-checked penske from dallas to miami, and it was 558 for their biggest truck....,the others were approximately the same. 1200 miles (approx) * .55 is 660 for just the mileage, then you pay by the day.... actually i guess they're in the same ball park...

I dont see a flexible schedule option?

Nevermind, got it..thanks.

Now through the 31st get 25% off truck rentals with code TFAS8

Totally agree- I rented from budget a couple of weeks ago and they really tried to screw me. They charged me for 4 gallons of gas and the $30.00 fill up fee. I only drove the truck literally 5 miles and put in the $.33 to make sure the truck was absolutely full. The only reason I was able to talk them into refunding me the $45 they charged me for "not filling up" was because I had only driven 5 miles. If I had driven the truck further there would have been no way for me to prove to them that I knew they were trying to rip me off. I also googled reviews and hardly anyone has anything good to say about Budget. I would be cautious and just spend the little bit of extra cash for the Uhaul since Budget will probably charge you the same amount in made up fees.

Well I went to re-comfirm my reservation and now I know why Budget is so cheap. They sting you with insurance charges. For damage to the truck its $104 and for accident coverage its $67

EDIT: Well Penske is $85 for damage to truck and $93 for accident insurance so not much difference. Penske rep said its likely the accident coverage may be in my own insurance but damage to the truck is likely not. He said with their damage coverage you hand the keys over and thats it, everything is covered. Penske rep seemed eager to please but Budget rep had a take it or leave it feeling to me. I understand why the insurance prices are not listed on the site now.

$85 and $93 for insurance alone?

I think it was about $30.00 the last two times I did a day rental with Penske. I called AMEX to see if they would cover, but their insurance applies to cars only. Geico does not cover the truck if damaged in an accident and they do not offer any type of insurance that would cover rental trucks.

I was trying to think of some way to avoid paying $30 every time I need to rent a truck.

I talked to Ryder and Budget. I believe Budget offered to waive the insurance requirement I just had to sign something saying I would pay out of pocket.
