Because those Slim PS2s were so much more reliable than original PS2s.
The existing PS3 hard drives are already big enough for most people, I don't know anyone with a PS3 who's filled their hard drive. If there's a good deal on the "fat" PS3, there's no reason to skip over a good PS3 deal if someone wants one now, unless someone doesn't have physical space to keep a "fat" PS3.

I never had a problem with my slim ps2, plus it's a completely different console. That's a stupid generalization to make.

Zach is right. Wait for the slim. Smaller foot print, bigger hard drive, and for the same price ($299) as the "old" 80GB PS3. Only thing you loose is ability to load Linux OS and reverse playback of PS2 games, but only the much older PS3's were able to do that anyway from what I've heard.

I was wondering if they're still gonna allow you to swap out HDDs.
This is a thread about this specific PS3 Deal. If you want to discuss the advantagesdisadvantages of the PS3 Slim which btw has no official Sony specs released despite all the rumored specs then do it in the current FW PS3 Slim thread. There are strong opinons on each side. Irregardless of your opinion either way you can't disregard Sony's long history of quality issues in their later gen "economy" gaming consoles as being a factor in your decision of "Phat" vs Slim.

lol you scold people to go and post in the PS3 Slim thread if they want to compare the two, and then you follow it up by pointing out issues to influence someone's decision on which one to buy.

I didn't know Sony had quality issues with consoles. I thought that was Microsoft's issue (overheating XBOX 360, the recall).

LOL you are kidding right? I don't know of anyone who has not exceeded the original capacity of their PS3 at least 2-3 times. Most I know are already near the 460GB formatted limit of their "upgraded" 500GB PS3 laptop drives. If you are still using the original PS3 drive then you are certainly not realizing the potential of your PS3 as a Media Center or Media Server. Now that Phat PS3 compatiable 1TB internal laptop drives are out I am sure the PS3 capacity limitations will ease for the moment.

For you an others than lack basic reading comprehension I did not point out ANY issues HERE specific to one console version or the other. I only mentioned that ALL Sony economy gaming consoles have well known issues than can't be denied and are easily verified ny a siimple Internet search. How exactly is that biasing one console version over the other version Mr "Expert".

PS2 compatibilty is relevant to whether or not this is a deal; last time i checked you werent a mod either.
cnIsfg said: For you an others than lack basic reading comprehension - thats rich! Try reading the first page, i mentioned nothing about quality issues, the deal was crapped purely because the slim is coming out, i merely stated that i didnt know if the slim could handle ps2 and then it was posted that the 80gb couldnt, that is not the case, the 40 and 160 cant, the 60 has hardware and the 80 emulation.
Sadly youve continued to add nothing to the thread (go talk about media center in off topic) but your opinion so why dont you lay off the stone throwing over there in your glass house.

While I agree with most of what you said - including the "you are kidding" part, I fail to see the need to store almost any of my media there since my PlayOn server handles everything quite well - negating the need for local storage. True it does cost a little bit of money, but is well worth it. Still, my 320GB drive has about 100GB worth of data on it right now - and maybe 10GB is media.
Regardless, the only question I would have about the slim is the capability to swap drives.
Everyone whining about PS2 capability being a deal breaker - you are not the audience Sony is targeting anyway. God of War 3 is coming soon enough....for that matter, I am still upset there is no DOS mode in Vista.

"Yes, you can. It does not void your warranty. In fact, we encourage it," Koller told us. He explained that the drive is now located on the front of the system, not the side, and changing out your hard drive will still be easy. "It's a two-screw process," he explained.
- has a 120GB HDD - can't install Linux - only 2 USB ports - different power cord - smaller and uses less power - matte finish - actual buttons instead of touch sensitive ones - 45nm processor - Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA bitstreaming just discovered
Sounds like a lot of cost reduction "downgrade" there.

Agreed, except for the reduction of energy usage + smaller size.

I don't see all that much downgrading. The touch-sensitive buttons, maybe, but I hate mine. They're crap. I'd gladly trade for real buttons.
All the current 3rd gen PS3s have 2 USB ports. To get more, you have to go back to the 1st or 2nd generation systems.
The power cord is simply a different cord. Nothing really to complain about there. It's just a cord.
The HD is maybe an issue, but it's 40GB larger than the current base PS3 that used to cost $100 more. The expensive one only had 160GB. If you're replacing 2 models with 1, it seems reasonable to split the size difference. It's still replaceable, in any case.
The matte finish is ugly, but the shiny finish looks like crap after it's collected dust for a few days. This one's a wash as they're both bad.
Lack of Linux may be a real drawback if you need it. That's the only real complaint-worth omission, as far as I can tell.

It consumes 34 percent less power and takes up 32 percent less space.
Im in the market for a PS3 after the pricecut and new model, but I will wait it out for sometime in September to see what stores do with the 80 and 160gb leftover models if they cut the price further to make room for the slim PS3's

I think those percentages are supposed to be for weight and volume, not power. I didn't see anyhting baout power usage on the new one yet.
BC isn't that important, REALLY! If you have the space for the bigger console (slim does look nice) then this is a good deal for a good game and a pretty good intro to BluRay. However, I also am going to wait and hope they up the stakes in the future to make room for the slim.

I think that's what sams club called their 'fathers day bundle'. I found a merchandise card in the video game section there that said 396 for 'fathers day bundle' but they couldn't figure out what the package was. If you have a sams club membership or know someone with one you're much better buying there as I believe they still have a basically open ended electronics guarantee. When I asked an employee one time about a tv he went to the service desk and when he came back confirmed that you could basically bring back a tv after a few years if it broke even without buying a service plan.

I looked at the stock online and they are selling fast in my area. Also, to extend the warranty was $19 bucks for 2 years at WalMart. I figured it was worth that cost.

Speaking of checking stock online, is the OPs deal in stock for anybody?
OOS for my current locale + my parents locale + my college locale (those were the only zip codes I knew off the top of my head for the in stock search)

My ability to load linux is still pretty tight thank you very much. Though I heard that you do lose the ability to load linux on the PS3 Slim.
