There is only one oil that is stable enough to resist heat-induced damage, while it also helps you promote heart health, maintain normal cholesterol levels and even supports weight loss -- coconut oil.

So, whenever you need an oil to cook with, use coconut oil instead of butter, olive oil, vegetable oil, margarine, or any other type of oil called for in recipes. Even though I don't fully recommend frying foods, if you must fry, by all means use coconut oil -- it's your smartest choice.

Coconut oil is ideal for skin care. It helps protect your skin from the aging effects of free radicals, and can help improve the appearance of skin with its anti-aging benefits.

In fact, physiologist and biochemist Ray Peat, Ph.D. considers coconut oil to be an antioxidant, due to its stability and resistance to oxidation and free radical formation. Plus, he feels it reduces our need for the antioxidant protection of vitamin E.

Like Dr. Peat, many experts believe coconut oil may help restore more youthful-looking skin. When coconut oil is absorbed into the skin and connective tissues, it helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by helping to keep connective tissues strong and supple.

Coconut oil will not only bring temporary benefits to the skin, but it will aid in restoring your skin's youthful appearance. The coconut oil will aid in exfoliating the outer layer of dead skin cells, making the skin smoother. It also penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin to strengthen the underlying tissues.

All fats are not equal.

And just so we're clear, the terms "fats" and "oils" are often used interchangeably, but fat is more correctly considered solid at room temperature, while oils are liquid. But what's really important is the structure.

The unique health benefits of coconut oil are directly related to its chemical structure, or more precisely, the length of its fatty acid chains.

Coconut oil is comprised of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), also called medium-chain triglycerides or MCTs.

Coconut oil is nature's richest source of these healthy MCFAs.

By contrast, most common vegetable or seed oils are comprised of long chain fatty acids (LCFAs), also known as long-chain triglycerides or LCTs.

There are several reasons to explain why these long-chain fatty acids are not as healthy for you as the MCFAs in coconut oil:

LCFAs are difficult for the body to break down -- they must be packaged with lipoproteins or carrier proteins and require special enzymes for digestion.
LCFAs put more strain on the pancreas, the liver and the entire digestive system.
LCFAs are predominantly stored in the body as fat. (That's why most people buy into the myth that fats are automatically "fattening".)
LCFAs can be deposited within arteries in lipid forms such as cholesterol.
On the other hand, however, the MCFAs in coconut oil are more health-promoting, because:

MCFAs are smaller. They permeate cell membranes easily, and do not require lipoproteins or special enzymes to be utilized effectively by your body.
MCFAs are easily digested, thus putting less strain on your digestive system. This is especially important for those of you with digestive or metabolic concerns.
MCFAs are sent directly to your liver, where they are immediately converted into energy rather than being stored as fat.
MCFAs in coconut oil can actually help stimulate your body's metabolism, leading to weight loss.

Great product great deal! But if you aren't using this regularly, a gallon will seem to last forever. Good it has a two year shelf life. Now where to put it???

....personal lubricant?

Organic & all natural. Much better than some of the chemicals in more expensive brands. Good for masage oil too.

i take a teaspoon a day. so your saying that you can put it on toast and such and cook with it but you shouldnt swallow it after brushing?

"but you shouldnt swallow it after brushing"

May not of made that clear. It was just an Obscure use most people don't know about: After you let it absorb the toxins

I just do it for a minute or two when i have extra time once a week or two:

http://www.totaldetox.net/tag/oil-pulling/

http://www.answerbag.com/articles/How-to-Oil-Pull-for-Health/3e540423-ffd0-e25a-4980-dff2c8f1ff6f

Step 3:
Swish the oil around in your mouth without swallowing it. Move it around in your mouth and through your teeth, as if it was mouthwash (don't tilt your head back to gargle though). You'll find that the oil will start to get watery as your saliva mixes with it. Keep swishing. If your jaw muscles get sore while swishing, you're putting too much into it. Relax your jaw muscles and use your tongue to help move the liquid around the inside of your mouth. When you do this correctly, you'll feel very comfortable. Pretty soon, it will become second nature.
Step 4:
As the end of the oil pulling session approaches, you may notice the oil/saliva mixture in your mouth has become thicker. This is quite normal, since it is pulling out toxins from your body. When 20 minutes is up, spit out the oil into the toilet. Don't be alarmed if it looks yellowish--this is also normal.
Step 5:
Rinse out your mouth a couple of times with warm water and spit into the toilet. Rinse and spit with a good mouthwash. I prefer to dilute with water (or use full strength), regular hydrogen peroxide and I rinse and spit with that. The hydrogen peroxide is very effective in rinsing out any toxins which may be left in the mouth.
Step 6:
Brush your teeth as usual with your toothpaste of choice. Baking soda is also a good option for brushing. Now you can drink liquids, eat and go throughout your day as usual. Enjoy a more healthier you with fresher breath, and clean, brighter and whiter teeth.
Tips & Warnings
To get your mind away from how long you are swishing, do something else at the same time. For example, read, watch something on television, check your email, make breakfast, take a shower or a bath. Before you know it, the 20 minutes are up.
If 20 minutes is challenging for you or if you notice you have a gag reflex, break up the time into 10 minute increments. Swish for 10 minutes, spit, get another tablespoon of oil and swish again for 10 minutes. If 10 minutes is too long, do 5 minutes at a time, four times.
If your oil pulling experience with your chose oil does not agree with your body, simply switch to a different oil. Choose an oil you resonate with. I started out with sunflower and sesame, since those are the recommended ones, and discovered my body loves the sunflower oil best. Sometimes, I'll swish with coconut oil just to switch things up (plus it tastes good). I once oil pulled with castor oil, which worked very well but I didn't care for the taste.
If you are oil pulling to cure specific disease in your body, use one of the tried and true oils first, the cold pressed or expeller pressed sunflower and sesame oil (not the toasted kind).
Adding a drop or two of peppermint essential oil into your tablespoon of oil, helps the detoxifying process and will help improve your oil pulling experience if you dislike the taste of the oil you are using.
Keep track of your experiences with oil pulling in a journal. Every person will have different experiences, depending on their health issues. There will be some common results, such as healthier gums and teeth.
If you have many toxins in your body or if you already have disease, you may experience detox symptoms at the beginning, such as headaches, pimples, more mucus and congestion. Continuing with your oil pulling anyway and these symptoms will disappear.

thnx for clearing that up, your a fast typer ha. and ya coconut oil is amazing and i recommend it for anyone

FYI: I tried to order a second gallon and was informed:

"You have used the coupon the maximum number of times allowed per customer.1 times."

If you want more than one gallon get in one big order or maybe you could make another acount...

I just tried to order, and I got the same message and have never ordered before from them.

To recieve coupon you have to become a fan of nutiva on facebook. OP will you put this in first post or in title. Thank you

Vitacost has better pricing. 21.49 for 54 ounces. Smaller sizes also available to try it. There is also a 5% Vitacost coupon floating around.

That website is super messed up. Or OP link is messed up.

When clicking the link from OP. You will log into Nutiva with the last persons login.

If you proceed to checkout you will see some 'foreign' persons act details and if you try to use the code it will fail with message 'can only be used once per member'

I saw someone elses, now I see mine!

I tried from a different machine.

If you log in to nutiva.com direct, all is good.

i cleared my cookies (and used a diff. credit card), i could enter a 2nd order @ 20% off, however, the code is for 20% full order, so order all your hemp seeds and oils first time and you'll get 20% off entier order.

and do enter from nutiva.com instead of link above.

Corba, Yes I see what you mean.....

Ya, it was the link that kept the website last order info in. I removed direct link in original post. If you need to search for what I think is the best deal it's:

Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil 1gal
[CFS301] $72.99 $39.99

PS. This was my 8th order from them. They always through some samples in your order. Ussually just packets of hemp seeds. But one time I had an 8oz bottle of hemp oil as a sample with the seeds. So you could get lucky too.

I'll probably order from Vitacost as they have better pricing. I am eyeing a sample pack and am wondering what products you recommend.

Huh???

At $32 for 128oz (1 gallon), nutiva.com costs 25¢/oz
At $21.5 for 54oz, Vitacost costs 40¢/oz, a 5% coupon won't make up/exceed that difference

Nutiva is a great brand and this is a fantastic price. I cook with cocnut oil, use it on my hair and skin, and sometimes make a toothpaste with coconut oil, baking soda, and peppermint oil. I'll have to try the drawing/rinsing technique the OP suggested. I highly recommend using a sterile utensil to scoop out a portion into a smaller covered container to use daily/frequently to avoid potential contamination the entire gallon.

Gosh I am sorry, you are right. I don't know why buy I was thinking 64 ounces not 128. Sorry.

You think that's bad? You can buy a 4 pack (4 gallons) or a 5 gallon tub: http://nutiva.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=23

Saturated Fat in Coconut Oil is bad for your heart

http://www.healthcastle.com/coconut-saturated-heart.shtml

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute warned that "a high content of saturated fat... found in ..... palm kernel oil, palm oil, coconut oil and cocoa butter" put people at risk for having heart attack or stroke.

* For the sake of your heart, minimize the intake of both saturated fats and trans fats. Choose wholesome fresh foods instead of packaged foods, which usually contain these bad fats.
* Avoid using cooking oils that are high in saturated fats and trans fats such as coconut oil, palm oil or vegetable shortening. Instead, use oils that are low in saturated fats and high in mono- and polyunsaturated fats such as canola oil, olive oil and safflower oil.
* As saturated fats are found in animals products, choose lower-fat version dairy. In addition, trim visible fats and skins from meat products.

Thanks. i just started using it a couple of months ago, and I love it. I use it for everything.

In for one. Thanks

Going to have to agree with this post. In my graduate Lipids course (taught through the Food Science and Nutrition department), coconut oil was at the top of the list for fats with high ratios of saturated to unsaturated fat, which is much more important than the chain length of the fats. While medium length FAs may not be present in LDL, dietary intake of fully saturated fats increases the production of LDL in the liver. Furthermore, the website's claim that the saturation resists oxidation is true, but this does *not* make such compounds antioxidants. Antioxidants be definition undergo oxidation. You can think of them as 'taking one for the team' in that way. Coconut oil, with its exceedingly low polyunsaturated fat content, is not much of an antioxidant.

Don't worry about the fat. Coconut oil is incredibly healthy stuff, and saturated fat has an undeserved reputation. Not to mention the type found in coconut oil is vastly different than the type found in factory farmed meat. Check out The Omnivore's Dilemma and Good Calories, Bad Calories for more. Also, this article.

Thanks OP!

The above post is sponsored by Big Pharma, the Soy Bean Association/Lobby, and Monsanto.

Saturated fat is considered "bad" by some authorities only when it contains LONG CHAIN fatty acids, as is the case with animal fat (in flesh, dairy, and eggs, where it is also associated with cholesterol, another "reason" for its bad reputation - a reason that is not based on good, up-to-date science but on the drug-pushing pharmaceutical industry's desire to sell more cholesterol-lowering drugs to the unsuspecting public) .

Coconut fat contains SHORT and MEDIUM CHAIN fatty acids, making it a perfect food for gut cells, for healthy (thyroid-protective) metabolism, and for prevention of the negative effects of unstable fats in vegetable oils (coconut fat functions as a cardio-protective, immune-protective, and cellular defense antioxidant, preventing the formation of dangerous fatty acid free radicals in rancidity-prone seed oils). Also, these coconut fatty acids have good antimicrobial capabilities (inhibiting the growth of viruses, bacteria, fungus or yeast, and parasites while promoting gastro-intestinal health). They enhance the immune system as well, and improve our overall hormonal balance.

Coconut oil is perfect for improved fat-burning metabolic activity, so it is an excellent addition to any weight-loss program (remember, good fat is necessary for general health!). It is great for skin care, since "you don't want to put anything on your skin that you won't put in your mouth".

One reason saturated fat (when not derived from animals) is actually very good is that it is very stable (does not go rancid in heat, oxygen, and light). The seed industry has brain-washed us to believe that all saturated fats are bad, so that we would use their extremely unhealthy, unstable cheap oils (especially soy, corn, peanut, safflower, sunflower, and canola oils) instead of the previously highly available, highly stable coconut and palm oils.

Everything in moderation. The truly bad oils are hydrogenated. Palm oil is high in CoQ10,tocotrienols and tocopherols. The lauric acid and ketones in coconut oil are extremely heart and brain healthy. Coconut oil actually raises HDL greatly as very few foods do. Here's an example of coconut oil reversing Alzheimer's in a middle-aged man. Coconut oil extract is also currently being marketed as a new treatment for Alzheimer's called Axona.
http://www.tampabay.com/news/aging/article879333.ece

If you are worried about saturated fat use tasteless MCT oil instead. Although, here's the real truth about saturated fats that's far more logical, cogent, and yes science based.
http://www.coconutoil.com/truth_saturated_fats.htm

Here's a strong counterpoint to the coconut oil is bad for you lobby.

I'm not big on soy, corn, and peanut oil. However cold-pressed virgin canola is a high source of omega-3. An oil is only as good as the extraction process. Cheaper oils are heat pressed, or worse yet extracted with hexane.... like for instance pomace oil made from olives. Pomace oil is really bad for you, while virgin and extra virgin olive oil is second to none.

I agree with limiting amounts of coconut oil, but I use it amost exclusively for cooking because it is heat stable. I stay away from soy, canola(rapeseed) and corn oils; particularly hydrogenated. I feel more comfortable eating products containing palm or coconut oils. Stating coconut oil is not healthy is not supported by research. Google Dr. Weston Price and learn more. Know the source. Patrick Timpone has some incredible interviews as well. Google Patrick Timpone and listen for free while it is still free.

The discount code "FAN" wouldn't work if choosing to check out, without creating an account.

Code "FAN" doesnot work. Dead?

Not until last page of checkout, price will not reflect 8.00 off.

For me, the code wouldn't work using the quick check out at all (without creating an account). I had to create an account to get the code to work.

Are the shakes any good? Do you mix with milk or water? I have a friend who is a cancer patient and can't gain weight. The oncologist says google MCT but thats it. Would these shakes help with the weight gain. Also this friend is subject to diarrhea. Will this promote it or help to stop it?

All the healthy and not-healthy claims are based in semi-phoneomenological arguments without a solid clinical studies behind these. When nutritional scientists are split - the consumers can't know any better. But if you really like the taste and want to count on placebo effect - that seems to be a good price.

speaking of good vs bad fats, try this on for size -

Lard contains just 40 percent saturated fat (compared with nearly 60 percent for butter). Its level of monounsaturated fat (the "good" fat) is 45 percent, double butter's 23 percent.

mmmm, lard

whats old is new again..

I've tried there hemp protein shakes, they are just too grainy to be mixed with milk/water/soymilk etc. It does not dissolve well or taste good, but I they do taste good if you use it as part of a shake. I make a protein shake after working out with the hemp protein, frozen berries and soy milk. Low calorie, high protein, and refreshing.

Uggh.... both sides arguing bout the deal is just ... oily. No thanks OP. I like EVO for Cooking just fine.

rasa frasin double post.

Good deal, but the amount of hack science in this thread is amazing!

Skipping 9 Messages...

just ordered 2 gallons for $70.38 shipped after using the FBFAN coupon. thanks op! now i've gotta pick out a deep fryer...
