Lowest price I have seen for this reliable, high sensitivity handheld GPS with a color map display. You also get the Costco extended warranty. It is somewhat 'last generation' but has the SIRF III chipset which is arguably better in forest cover than some newer ones with similar specs from new chipset makers. The built in maps are not much, but user assembled sets of USGS 1:24000 topos for some areas (for example, all of California) can be downloaded free from www.gpsfiledepot.com. It can take up to a 4Gb microSD card for map and trackfile storage , enough to let you log your location once per second for every waking hour for months. There is a newer, somewhat more expensive generation with bigger screens, some of which can display aerial photos (DeLorme Pn-40, Garmin Colorado,etc.). Most of those have or formerly had firmware issues and have higher battery drain. This is a transitional unit and has both a serial port and USB. Most of the next generation only have USB. A niche product, but I'll probably buy another. http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11491434&cm_mmc... |
