I think this is a good deal. Compared to equivalent bikes produced by Schiwnn and Trek, the nashbar bike is at least $100 cheaper. Rims, spokes, cog, ect... are virtually the same between the three. I found cheaper fixed gear bikes out there, however the components are of lesser quality and the they are sold by merchants that I have no experience with. I have ordered from nashbar.com on a three occasions over the past year, and in my personal experience, they have done a great job.

If there is a better deal out there for a bike like this, please share.

Wow. I can honestly say that hadn't even occurred to us.

Our Deal Hunter experiment was started to bring extra value to the forum community because we want to be the best for YOU. We want great deals, great discussion, and we thought some staff created deals might make our forums even better.

From concept to creation, the idea of staff Deal Hunters has been focused on the community.

Does that coupon code give you free shipping? Otherwise, tax and shipping kill this deal.

Seems much better then the WalMart/Targe/TRU garbage that is normally posted. For < $300 it seems like a nice bike. Now just need to stack up some more coupons on it (free ship or find a bigger % off + some CB)

Grandpa told me about single speed bikes. They might be OK for Waterloo, Iowa but I'll take gears anyday!!

Bikes like this are all over the place. Problem is if you want a Fixie you really need to ride one first for fit. I would suggest a LBS first! The extra cash there is worth it in fit.

besides that here are a few under the $300 price:

Coming from a guy who has spent obscene amounts of cash on fixed gear setups, I would argue, despite all of the bashing, that this is arguably a decent deal for anyone looking for a simple fixie to mess around with. Not flaming hot as there are plenty of generic $300-$350 fixies floating about online. 48x16 is a good learning gear ratio.

Plus, it looks good.

Thanks, HappyCamper09.

The Schwinn fixed-gear road bike on Amazon is $300 with free shipping and no tax (for me).

I appreciate most of the Deal Hunter posts I've seen as they're usually of greater value than most other posts and they're always from reputable brands or vendors. Anyone can post a cheaper fixed gear bike from an unknown eBay seller, but that's not comparable. So long as the Deal Hunters are truly knowledgeable about a subject and know the real "street value" of things, why not have them searching for special deals? If you have a better deal overall, just post it in response. Better yet, start your own thread. You don't win a prize or anything, but that's not the point. If the title doesn't reflect a good deal, why are you clicking the thread anyway?

I agree, buying a bike online unless you've been on that particular bike before can be a bad experience.

Thanks for all the constructive replies everyone! I think if anyone is in the market for a fixie, they have a few people to turn to.

edit: forgot the word "in"

While I don't have this model, I do own Nasbar's 29'er and am quite pleased with it. My other bikes are mostly Bianchi (fixed track) and Specialized (road bikes).

I did notice that nashbar also has their flat bar fixed road bike (better reviews) for the same deal. Also, Performance has the Schwinn Cutter for the same price with no coupon.

Nice Deal OP....but I won't ride a fixed gear. I at least need a free wheel. Screw pedaling down hill...

For those that don't know, there's a good description of fixed gear vs single speed here: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/singlespeed.html

-g

but what will your hipster friends think when they figure out that your fixie isn't vintage?

glenatuf,

It's a flip/flop hub, although there are some comments in the product reviews on chain line if you do it. So, in theory, you could make it a single rather than a fixie.

# Rear Hub: Single Speed 36H, Nutted, w/ 16T Freewheel

That's a single speed, not a fixed wheel... Which is way better, at least to me.

edit: man that's tempting. If there was an active 10 or 20% off coupon, I'd so be in...even though I don't need it.

The Ops on the other hand has this guy:

# Hubs: Sealed bearing alloy, Flip/Flop rear hub

which IS fixed, by the sound of it.

edit: woops, responding to answered question already...=)

Just got an email saying free shipping today. Unfortunately, it doesn't knock all the shipping off since it's overweight. Maybe like $10.

Also, check with your employer to see if you get any sort of wellness bucks. I got $200 back from my company when I bought the 29'er

Flip/flop means fixed one side, freewheel on other.

Watch out for CC fraud after buying from nashbar, their CC processor still appears to be compromised. For more infor check this thread. Use one time CC # if you can.

They claim to have fixed that months ago.

performance bike has a 20% off sale today. They have a fixed gear bike for $300, or $240 after the 20% discount. If you have a local Performance Store, you should be able to buy the bike there and avoid the shipping fee.

http://www.performancebike.com/bikes//Product_10052_10551_102607...

Performance owns nashbar, so I would not be surprised if this bike was identical to the one at nashbar.
Performance has a 3% FW CashBack.

nashbar lowered the price of the bike to $280.
W257 coupon reduces the price to $252.
Shipping is still $27, so total is $279.

20% nashbar discount code 73496 through Sept. 23.
$280 - 20% + $27 shipping = $251.

The price has dropped to $224.99. Just use coupon code: W257.
