It is not just the Smithsonian, it is all Smithsonian Museums

Smithsonian museums are always free. Here is the list of participating museums:

Dont the Smithsonian museums, at least in DC, have free admission all the time?

Participating Museums are not generally free admission. These are Smithsonian affiliate museums.

"Offer valid only on September 26, 2009 (Exceptions for Museum Day participating museums closed on Saturdays). Card must be presented for free general admission and is good for 2 people. Not valid for special exhibits, IMAX film screenings or for use with any other offers. One Admission Card per household. Admission card will be collected upon entry. Museums and cultural venues participate in Museum Day voluntarily."

Would save $10 a person for the Senator John Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh. thanks OP
