can anybody comment on if the ticket prices are artificially inflated to make the companion ticket a wash?

This is not first of a kind, normally these promotions are a ripoff as they charge way higher than prevaling market fares

Often there are restrictions in the fine print of the actual certificate, such as requiring you to buy the first ticket at a certain class of fare, e.g. a "Y" class fare. In other words, "coach" can have more than pricing level. So the deal can be less good than assumed.
