Unfortunately you have to buy a 1st class seat to get a coach seat for free. Still a decent find for people that fly 1st class.

You may want to put that in the heading.

No. Buy one coach, get the second coach free.

What part of: "The recipient of this certificate is entitled to purchase one adult round-trip, coach-class airline ticket in this offer and receive a Companion ticket" implies anything about a 1st Class ticket?

I think he's confused because it said something like you had to buy the "first coach ticket"
oh well... attention to details.

can anybody comment on if the ticket prices are artificially inflated to make the companion ticket a wash?

This is not first of a kind, normally these promotions are a ripoff as they charge way higher than prevaling market fares

Often there are restrictions in the fine print of the actual certificate, such as requiring you to buy the first ticket at a certain class of fare, e.g. a "Y" class fare. In other words, "coach" can have more than pricing level. So the deal can be less good than assumed.
