Usenetnow.net has unlimited usenet access for $10.19 per month and you don't have to be bugged with a subscription. You can renew when you want to. I have used them in the past to buy a month here and there as I needed it. You get both servers US and EU and then you get SSL and posting. Retention is stated at 335 days I believe but going to 400 days as it states on there website (just like all the others). The link to get the price is http://usenetnow.net/upue.html

For those looking to get started with usenet, Gizmodo.com just did a very easy to follow write up: How To: Kick Your Torrent Addiction With Usenet

I personally use Astraweb and Alt.Binz usenet program, it is definitely worth making a donation to get the latest version that allows you to search most of the top NZB search site right in the app. You have to register in the forum, then make a donation to get the latest version.

that's a good guide there, i did as instructed and setup SABnzbd with Astraweb ($11/mo). Qued up a bunch of stuff and been downloading 24/7 at 15mbit for a couple of weeks now. hard drive space goes fast when you add +130gb per day.

Astraweb streams to me at ~1800kbs and they seem very reliable. will stick with them for now but good to know there are alternatives in the same price range.

i was paying so much more to use the web interface at Easynews because i didn't want to be bothered with the NNTP stuff, seemed like a big hassle. SABnzbd makes it totally simple, loving how it's all automated. you just download a small NZB file then it does the rest and after a little while it spits out the completed file. nice!

hopefully you arent with Comcast or i would expect a phone call real soon.

So what's the deal with usenet these days and encryption? Can you tell it to do end-to-end encryption like with torrents now?

nope, i have time warner and there's no cap that i'm aware of. there have been some months when i've downloaded 200-400gb and never heard a thing from them. however at this rate i would be sucking down 4TB a month. i can't keep that up for much longer though. i keep running out of space and adding capacity is expensive since i do 1:1 backups.

yes most usenet providers give you the option for SSL links. works for me and no performance hit.

You can do SSL transfers from your news provider to your news client with connection instructions provided by your news provider. I like the Grabit news client since it does all of the SSL, binary par file checking and extraction for me. It also runs nicely under Wine on Ubuntu and has a search engine built in.

Unlike torrents, the entire data stream is encrypted with SSL. With torrents, the SSL was just to bypass any traffic shaping/blocking AFAIK.

I think this is a better deal from a more reliable company: 11$ unlimited with ssl on 563 & 443, and 380 days retention across all groups

Only 20 simultaneous connections? Meh, I'll stick with NewsHosting, as they give me 60.

Astraweb and newsleecher have been my provider and software of choice for a good while now.

Joking? Less connections are typically better. Do you have a really high latency line perhaps? Then maybe. Otherwise it should only take 2-6 on an average cable line to max out your downstream from most major commercial usenet providers.

Slyck

I do apologize if you have a 100Mbps or greater link, then sure 60 may be fine.

Not that this has anything to do with this deal but how can you say Astraweb is more reliable? I have used usenetnow off and on as needed since earlier this year with no issues. Used there other service Blocknews.net for about 2.5 years i think, back when they sold unlimited and block accounts from that one site.

A few things make this deal stand out over Astrawebs and others....1- You are not bugged with a subscription 2- It is a bit cheaper although it is 89 cents, this is Fatwallet and we are all here to save money right? 3- Astraweb has NO support on the weekends. Send in a question to Astraweb friday night and i will do the same with blocknews or usenetnow, come back early next week and let me know what time Monday morning / Afternoon you get a response. I fudged up my news reader settings and didnt realize it earlier this summer. I sent a question into usenetnow at about midnight eastern time Friday night and had a response in an hour or so.

Retention will probably end up being the same for everyone so that really isnt a big deal to talk about I guess.

For those who don't need unlimited, you can check out blocknews.net as they have the best value for block accounts on the web right now.

It's articles like this one that are going to get usenet regulated.

not this forum, The "How to Kick Your Torrent Addiction with Usenet" article.

People who use usenet don't talk about usenet...

Fight Club rules apply.

I pulled down something 382 days old yesterday with them, a few blocks were missing but nothing that could not be repaired. I did not test further so I do not know if all groups are up to 381 days, but the one I did use was one of the more popular ones. So i think whatever they have on there website is a very low estimation!

What backend does usenetnow work off of? How long have they been around? I'm tempted with the 6/mo deal at $8.50/mo (http://usenetnow.net/ngr.html). But I don't want to commit 6 months to a new/questionable company.

And anyone know if they allow multi-ip?

They used to be blocknews.net and have been around for like 2.5 years i think, at least i have used them for that long. When they were just blocknews, they used highwinds. They split the two websites off earlier this year so block accounts are on one website and then usenetnow is unlimited accounts. It isn't highwinds anymore i know that (thank god). Support is quick and they seem like they are on top of things. i wouldnt worry about 6 months, they had a big sale on those earlier this summer and it spread around the internets so with all the customers they got i can't imagine they would go poof! Account sharing, i have no idea about, most likely not, it seems like only european providers allow that.
