I was just at my local PETsMART and they have the older looking bags of nutro dry catfood for 50% off. Most of them have additional coupons on them too. I just picked up a 20# bag that was regularly $40 for $16. The newer bags are regular price. The exp date on the older bags I was buying was 09-10, so plenty of shelf life left.
I normally don't buy this brand because of the price.
I used to feed this brand, and my cats did well on it. I changed because they raised the price CONSIDERABLY when the Mars company bought them out, and I can buy higher quality food for the same price or less.
Seemed like pretty good stuff though. It used to be at a great price point, but not anymore, IMHO. Great deal here though, OP.
Found some 20lb/8lbs/4lbs bags at the Murrieta Ca store (50+% off but very limited supply left). Many bags included a $4 coupon attached too .
Grabbed a 20lb first vist ,then about an hr or so later decided to go back for more but all the 20lb bags were gone . Settled for a pair of 8 lb bags. 20 lb bag ($40 regular price) $20 -$4 coupon = $16 8 lb bag ($20 regular price) $11.90 each , -$4 coupons = $7.90 each (x2 bags) TOTAL : (1) 20lb $16 (2) 8lb $15.80 = $31.80 Savings of $48 !!!
I do agree though , the regular prices were quite abit lower not long ago . My cat loves the stuff , but I may be forced to go for a different brand if prices keep rising . However Iam good for about another 9+ months at this point ; so we'll see what happens by then .
I think it all depends on the ingredients of the cat food. Not all dry cat food is bad, and not all wet cat food is good. That is fine if your cat drinks enough of water with dry food made of healthy ingredients. Wet cat food with wheat/corn gluten, animal digest/by-product is a big no-no to feline.

Do some research. Cats need meat, as in the wet, canned variety.
Vegetable based dry food, even with some trace meat byproducts, is bad for feline health.
Great find OP! Normally feed the kitty Max Cat, but with this price was able to upgrade. Got the last 20 lb bag of Adult for $20 and a 4 lb bag of the Kitten formula for $6.90 (Gonna switch kitty to adult food after the 4 lb bag of Kitten formula runs out). With $5 off total in coupons (found in store), I left with 24 lb of cat food for $21.90 + tax.
I found these at the Howell Mill location in Atlanta. I got the last Adult and Kitten bag of any size. They did have 6 more 20 lb Senior formula bags for $20 as well as some smaller Senior formula bags. I had previously checked the Cobb Parkway location and did not find anything.
If cheap cat food with vegetable protein that is correct. ie. Kit n' Kaboodle
Liver Failure = Diabetes
Canned is mainly water 78%. It would be better to feed a high quality
dry food than a low quality wet food.
I am currently supplementing with raw chicken parts with bone. You
have to balance Protein and Calcium.

I just got a couple of the big bags at the Bloomingdale store - there were a couple of the weight-loss big bags left as well as tons of the smaller bags in all varieties. They were located on a back endcap. This is a really great deal for some better quality cat food!

You are very wrong with your conclusions. 1) Diabetes has very little to do with the liver - google pancreas 2) Water is not inherently bad 3) Raw chicken is bad. Cook it. 4) Balance protein with calcium? Did you just make this up? It's an absurd statement.
Chicken meal is much better than chicken. nice article
Gluten is a filler in cat food.
Stay as far away from anything that says "animal" or "meat" in the ingredients as this can be sourced from anything. Does the author of that article work for Blue Seal Feeds?

Whether he was correct or not, I have no idea. Some of the research I did supports this view, though. My cat was fed Science Diet dry food for 18.5 years before he got liver failure. A pretty good lifespan, I'd say.

In the wild felines eat the bones as well as the meat. Canned and dry foods have the bones ground in or calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate added.

+1 We were avid fans of Nutro until the relentless, unreasonable price hikes. The last straw was when price was in high 30s per bag. That's when we switched to Kirkland Premium for about half. Nutro lost us because of their greed.
There was a voluntary recall on Nutro dry cat food early this summer. I got nervous and stopped feeding it to our kitties. Just be certain that the expiration dates on your food aren't involved in the recall. Info in link above.

Thanks for the heads up OP. I have 4 cats and was needing to buy more food. My PETsMART (Buffalo, NY area) had some smaller bags of the Nutro that was a great price and also a 20lb bag of Eukanuba for $20. Unfortunatley the bags in my store didn't have any coupons on the package but I did have some coupons they gave me when I adopted my kittens. I'm going to check out another store in the area tomorrow and see if they have any bags with coupons on them.

Half had the $3/$4 coupons on them. Found the same coupons at Petco, I reallocated them.
I gotta say I have mixed feelings about this deal. Sure the bags are 1/2 the price of the new label, but seems to me not long ago I was pricing the premium brands at this same price point - $6 for small/$20 for large. When did pet food double in price? Right about the time we had the Chinese melamine scare? Sounds like a scam to me as most of my other food prices are declining.
I know that Nutro MaxCat has retailed in the $25 range for a 20-lb. bag at PETsMART/Petco since the beginning of this year. I went with that one because Nutro (the real stuff on sale on this thread) cost so much more (~$10 more if I remember correctly). So while they might be saying the standard retail price is slightly higher than it really was, it definitely wasn't anywhere as low as $1/lb. This is still a good deal on a price basis of this brand (of course there are cheaper options...other cat foods).

Wow , thx for the heads up . One of my 8lb bags from the sale is in the listed recall .
I do remember reading about this before , but recently forgot about this . Again thx for the reminder !!!
Slickone said: Bump. Everyone should read the consumeraffairs.com link atwnsw posted just above. There are still complaints being added to it.
Again thx .
Just to let everyone know , the recall page HERE still looks the same , BUT the dates have changed once again . Previous recall dates were for 2009 stuff (around April-Sept 09) ; but NOW there seems another recall for 2010 dates !!!
Damn , Ive already returned some Nurtro cat food from the earlier recall dates of 09 , now theres MORE for 2010 !!!
QUOTE :Franklin, Tennessee (May 21, 2009) -- Today, Nutro Products announced a voluntary recall of select varieties of NUTRO® NATURAL CHOICE® COMPLETE CARE® Dry Cat Foods and NUTRO® MAX® Cat Dry Foods with “Best If Used By Dates” between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. The cat food is being voluntarily recalled in the United States and ten additional countries. This recall is due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in our finished product resulting from a production error by a US-based premix supplier.
I'll now be returning ALL the Nutro cat food I have (about 35lbs) ,one older label 20lb and two 7lb bags with the newer labeling/packaging. Having this many recalls almost back to back is BS and for the SAME reason , let alone no "offical" notification from Nutro either (even after signing up at the Nutro site for updates) .
I guess I'll try Science Diet or something simular . Any other recommendations for a healthy/indoor-outdoor 3 yr old cat ???
Beware of the ingredients used in Nutro. My local pet store owner avidly advises clients against buying Nutro any more since the MARS corporation bought the company and made the price hike. He'd rather clients switch to cheaper bags than buy Nutro. The ingredients have also since changed into lower quality ingredients. Read the ingredients list. For even the discounted $16 at 20lb bag, there are better options out there.

I didn't notice that. We just returned all the Nutro food we had bought from this deal. Thankfully hadn't used it yet, since I'd been debating to return it or not.
While there's nothing wrong with Science Diet, as we had a cat that lived 18.5 years exclusively on SD, my mom is now using Purina Pro Plan with her new cat, since (maybe just with the diet versions), the main ingredient (meat) was better than Science Diet (rice).
Even though Nutro Natural Choice was not bad according to the link (and Ive yet to have any problems with it in the last 3yrs) , its still all going back tomorrow due to the many recalls and complaints of late .
