i setup tversity a while ago and it never seemed that stable. q6600,3gb,gig-e wired connection. seemed to lock up alot or dead stream.
anyone got any stories of great success with this app?
Installed it on Win7. Dont think I need it. Besides it gave bloatware with it. Never asked if I wanted it or not. Not impressed. I rarely install anything I dont know about and this was a mistake.
The original version was pretty bad. It had a lot of issues with refreshing folders, etc. I'm currently using 1.6 without any issues and love it. Currently running on a Core 2 Quad Extreme Q6850 on WinXP with 3.25GB(4GB) RAM. I'll try out the beta.
@ComeOnNow - did you get the Bloatware with the new Beta download or a previous older version? If you got it with the beta, i might just skip it.
If you are streaming content from your computer to either a PS3 or Xbox 360, I'd suggest PS3 Media Server (yes, it works with the 360)... Great free product.
But, if you need to stream, it seems TVersity is a pretty good app.

I got the bloatware with the current download (1.7 beta).

I had tried this in the past and could never get it working with my 360 or PS3. Not sure if the latest version is improved. In my experience, PlayOn is better(even though it still has issues and, of course, is not free).

My experience is the same as 'awp'
I have tried to use Tversity many times and ran into various issues. PlayOn has never given me any problems. I'll try out the pro and lets see what happens.

Has anyone gotten the email with download link yet? I tried three different accounts - the first one being over an hour ago and nothing...

I have been running it for the last year. Works beautifully. It pretty much worked without much tweaking. I have a PS3 and also have PS3 media server which works great too.

Thanks for the heads up. Great post op, but I'll survive with just the free version.

The Pro version has always been free (well, technically, it's a good faith system and they would like you to pay for a license), so this isn't anything new. I've downloaded that version numerous times now and haven't ever had to pay for anything. The only thing that TVersity has going for it over PlayOn IS the fact that you can get it for free. Otherwise, it would be a no-brainer to go with PlayOn (which is half-off with a coupon right now I believe). I use PlayOn on a daily basis and combined it with Netflix to eliminate the need for cable TV.
Anyway, TVersity is a good program to get your feet wet when it comes to this type of streaming entertainment. If you intend to stream services like Hulu a lot, you'd probably be happier with PlayOn, which also has plugins available now for a wide variety of other sites and services.
Unless TVersity now supports more codecs and file types than it did earlier this year, stick with Java PS3 media server if you have a PS3. It can transcode 1080p mkv files and push bitrates up to the limits of you bandwidth.
Is anyone running this on an older PC (2-3 years old) with a standard 6 Mb cable connection?

I'm using TVersity with my Xbox and it works well for avi files, not so great with streaming from Hulu (can't fast forward). However, I just learned that PS3 Media Server plays ISO and mkv files (thanks to the above posts), so I'll be checking out that app tonight.

Honestly, PS3MS is the best thing since sliced bread. 1080p mkvs work great- but you really need the bandwidth on your network...

Hadn't known about PS3MS prior to reading this thread. My question is when you start running multiple media servers (PlayOn, TVersity, PS3 Media Server) will they conflict with one another causing issues? Or can they run in harmony? In my case, I was just thinking of PlayOn and PS3MS.

I am unable to answer specifically for PS3MS and PlayOn, but I had Orb, TVersity & PS3MS running simultaneously at one point (while I was testing out PS3MS). I don't think it would be a problem since you can specify which port you want PS3MS running on. In fact, since I'm running the Win7 Ultimate Beta I've noticed the Windows sharing service listed on my PS3, but I don't use it since PS3MS honestly takes care of all my sharing needs.
JohnTheDoe said: I read somewhere that you cant pause/ffwd/rew with PS3MS ?
Not true.
I have used PS3 Media Server, TVersity, Nero Home, WM8, and Orb. I have different uses for different application but I will start out by saying I have a home network (wireless), PS3, and iPhone.
PS3MS is the best for PS3 functionality. Period. There are no detection issues, and it is "live" so there is no need for a "library" to store playlists. Plays HD (via.mkv)and .Iso, you should have a wired connection for HD. No Cable TV streaming though, just media.
Tversity is my second choice for the PS3, but it won't play some files without transcoding, which is slower on Tversity then PS3MS. PS3MS plays more files natively thus better streaming. If you want to stream Cable TV this is the choice. It requires you to build a library and you have to refresh it to update it unlike PS3MS.
Nero Home: not recommended.
WM8: Not recommended.
ORB: Perfect for the iPhone. It streams my cable tv to my iphone and works flawlessly. It also streams movies to the iPhone of most formats. I dont care for it on the PS3 although it does work. I will add that Slingbox can do cable TV also but you have to buy the hardware which is a bit pricey. I love this program for the iPhone.
Everyone will have to use whatever accommodates their hardware at home for the best fit. They all get the job done, just some better than others. They all do photos, and music decently.
Can anyone explain how these work? The tv versity or the PS3 one? I have an x-box 360 connected to my router via ethernet cable. But how would I stream content from my PC to the 360 to my TV that the 360 is connected to? I don't understand how it works or what I need.
The program plays media on your PC or Mac by transmitting a signal through a "media server" such as a PS3, Xbox, HTPC or other piece of hardware. So to be clear, Tversity is software on your computer that allows you to stream media (.avi, .mkv .mp3, .jpeg) over a network (wired or wireless) to your media server (PS3,Xbox) whcih will then allow it to play on your TV. Once you have set up your PC and software to stream correctly, it will create an icon on your PS3 XMB which will magically appear. Then you access the media server through the XMB on PS3. It will show up as an icon on the XMB under Video, music, and photos. Then you navigate to the icon, and it will allow you access to the folders on your PC and the ability to browse and you click what you want to play and it plays on your TV.
You can stream cable to another TV that may not have a jack accessible. You can stream movies to another room without a physical wire or you can just stream movies to the TV. This way you dont have to burn it/write to a thumb drive and there is no physical media involved. You can play your entire music library remotely as well as your pictures up on the big screen.
I take it a step further even and have all this on my iPhone. I can stream my cable tv, photos, music, and movies from anywhere in the world.

I can make an unreasonable decision? Shouldn't it have read better....

If I already have an HTPC hooked to each TV is there really an advantage to this program?
sivartk said: If I already have an HTPC hooked to each TV is there really an advantage to this program?
Somewhat. If you don't have a cable input on one of the HTPC's you can stream the cable to another one through the program so you don't need a jack installed. Also if you want to stream to a laptop that may be using your internet but not shared on the network. You can also stream the media to another one if it is stored on one computer, if they are not networked and shared. Also do your HTPC's all have Blu-Ray players? If not with this program you could have one and stream the contents to the other TV's with this program. Those are just a few uses. i'm sure there are more.

I completely concur... at least from my experience with a previous version of TVersity...at least following an s/w update from Sony for the PS3...PS3 Media Server seemed much more stable and faster...

I don't know about netflix, but hulu does work. I tried it out a few weeks ago and got it to work setting the Device to Mpeg1/2. Playback was choppy and after stopping, my computer was still transcoding. I couldn't find any other recommended transcoding settings for xbmc/xbox, so I haven't used it since.

Yeah, I use PS3 Media Server (as it seems a lot of people do in this thread), but I can't seem to cause the X-Box to recognize it (or any DLNA streaming server, TVersity included).
I also think it's transcoding my MKV content instead of just re-muxing it, since it shows "MPEG2" as the video type for any of my non MP4 videos (it shows "MPEG4" for those).
But, I had many more significant issues with TVersity, with it taking anywhere from 5-20 minutes from the time I turned on the PS3 until the time the PS3 discovered it. I also didn't like the library refresh interval, since I couldn't just upload a quick video and immediately have access to watch it if I didn't manually refresh the library. So, I have issues with both programs, but more significant ones with TVersity.
