Seems ok if you need a 4670 to upgrade your old computer.

$15 off w/promo code VGA9915, ends 9/15 Plus free shipping

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161287&...

There is a gigabyte with same price but it's after $10 rebate

That's a good price for that particular HIS model. I think the Gigabyte is also good.

Prices on several of the HD4670s are settling around the $60-&70 (usually with rebates involved). My guess is that this is in anticipation of the newer Radeons on the horizon?

I just grabbed a Diamond HD4670 1GB DDR3 off Amazon for $66, shipped, which I thought was a great deal, but this one is even better - $7 less, faster shipping and it has HDMI built-in, if you need that.

My preference for the Diamond included the fact that it had component video output for my older HDTV, but still came with an HDMI adapter, plus the usual DVI and VGA.

(UPDATE: When I finally got the Diamond HD4670, it didn't have the component output. They've changed the configuration on the card. It's VGA, DVI, and HDMI like everyone else now. )

Did a lot of research before I settled on the HD4670, and I'm mainly buying it for the solid HD playback performance and the fact it doesn't need an external power connector.

The reviews for the HIS that I've found look better than what I've been reading about the Diamond. But I think (hope) I'll be satisfied with it.

I need a low profile card for the Dell 545s i just got on last weekends outlet sale.
Newegg seems to have some good options.
Gigabye or Asus Radeon 4350 - $25AR, PNY Geforce 8400GS $20AR, Asus 9400GT $35AR, or 4650 $33AR.
is the 4650 the best of these?

I would say yes (and I have 3 of the 4 cards you've listed plus an 8500GT). For a basic comparison , see this graphics card hierarchy chart.

You got a link for that? Until I find a 60" DLP with HDMI for 599.90 at Frys, I'm stuck w/ component, too.

The deal on Amazon is over. Price is back up to $101.97....

But...here's the exact same Diamond HD4670 at Newegg:

Click here to see the Diamond.

It's $64.99 AR, plus shipping.

Or here is a Powercolor HD4670 at Newegg:

Click here to see the Powercolor

It's only $54.99 AR, plus shipping. But it doesn't come with an RGB breakout cable, so you would have to order one of these, too, which is an additional $12.95.

UPDATE: I received the Diamond HD4670 from Amazon yesterday. Apparently Diamond has changed the hardware configuration on that model. It no longer comes with an S-video or Component video output port. Instead, it has VGA, DVI and HDMI on the card....like everyone else's HD4670.

If you want the S-video and component output...(EDIT: See my later posts in this thread on what I've learned about the component video output on this card).

None of those cards will play games as well as the 4670, although the entire Radeon 4xxx series does pretty well with Blu-ray playback, assuming your CPU is also up to the task.

IF you want a card that is good with both games and HD/Blu-ray playback, and you want to go with Nvidia, I would suggest the 9500GT as a minimum. Newegg has them (with rebate) under $40 at times, and for older games, I think they're great at that price.

If you want a cheaper ATI card, I would forget the 4350 and stick with the 4550 as a minimum. It usually comes in low-profile. Gaming is not as good as comparable-priced ATI, but the HD playback is still very good. The 4650 is OK too, but neither it nor the 4550 can keep pace...gamewise...with the 4670, which is really outstanding for the price. (See Tom's Hardware, Anandtech, etc. they all recommend the 4670 as the entry-level "mainstream" gaming card for now.)

When the 4770 finally ships in larger quantity and the price gets below $100, it's the better deal on the ATI side, but it's still pretty pricey at this point.

thanks for the responses blackpearl and cartfan.
the best option for me looks like the 4650 because i need low profile.
there are no 4670 or 9500 low profile options.
and at $33, it looks like a good deal.

the question is whether its enough of an upgrade over the integrated x3100 chip to
make it worthwhile or if i should wait for a low profile 4670/4770.
the x3100 is about on the level of the nvidea fx5200 according to that tom's chart,
the 4350 is 7 levels higher, and the 4650 another 5 levels above that.

You're right on the low-profile....only the 4550 and 4650 are available. Forgot about that when I replied.

And yes, the 4650 is a definite upgrade over any of the integrated graphic options, both for gaming and hi-def playback.

The deal for a 4650 @ $33 AR is not bad at all.

The 4670 is still faster, primarily because it uses DDR3 instead of DDR2. Otherwise, they have many of the same features.

FYI: I finally got my Diamond HD4670 video card from Amazon. They've changed the spec on this one, apparently. The card I received a VGA, DVI and HDMI port. NO component video or S-video output.

BTW: Model number is identical to what Amazon had listed and what was listed on the Diamond website.
Click here to see the info for the card I got.

If you're buying this for a component video display ...(EDIT: see the next post for info on the component out capabilities of this card)

Final follow up post on the Diamond HD4670.

Card works great. Updated to the latest ATI catalyst and all options are available, which is what I was wanting. That includes all the AVIVO post-processing options - De-interlacing, Vector Adaptive, Denoise, Edge Enhancement, etc.

That's what I was wanting. Happy Camper, so far.

And for component output, folks on the AVS forum say that this ATI DVI to Component adapter ($6.20 + shipping) should do the trick.

Click here to see the ATI DVI to Component adapter.

After I get one and try it out, I'll report back.
