Earlier this year bought a Pentax K100D camera kit at the Ritz GoB for $235. Been looking for a Zoom lens for awhile but on eBay they sell for at least $120.

Found this http://www.techforless.com/cgi-bin/tech4less/253091540?id=z5mi8v... combo on techforless for $99 shipped after 10% coupon. ( mcouponS10)

As of today 45 left, it is listed as Open Box but mine was all new ( YMMV)

My kit included the following:

Sigma MiniZoom Macro 28-80 F3.5-5.6 II http://www.techforless.com/cgi-bin/tech4less/085126659455?id=z5m... selling here for $46.

Sigma 70-300mm F5-5.6 DL Macro Super http://www.techforless.com/cgi-bin/tech4less/085126505455?id=z5m... selling here for $250 similair price on Buy.com

Sigma camera lens bag, similar to this http://www.photo4less.com/pd-productid-1165-ref-Become.htm so about $20.

Also included are all the caps.

Here is the review for the 70-300 lens http://shutterbug.com/equipmentreviews/lenses/0500sb_sigma/

While doing my research I found this deal discussed on SD but never did see it here. Kit arrived today.

Here is the link for the Minolta one even a better price http://www.techforless.com/cgi-bin/tech4less/253091524?id=z5mi8v...

The Minolta one is only $78 and would fit Sony's too. YMMV

BTW. Do not try to use Bing and the coupon, I got caught in a loop and had to close my browuser

If you just need some alternative lenses, or if you're looking to do things as cheaply as possible, this is a fine deal. But keep in mind that most Pentax-branded lenses will retain most of their value in resale; they're not like most technology that loses half its value the week after it comes out. These lenses don't have particularly desirable characteristics, and while Sigma is a fine brand, simply not being Pentax will hurt their resale value should you decide to upgrade later. That said, they're so cheap, you might just be able to resell them and recoup the cost anyway.

Again, this is a fine purchase if you're starting out or just want to experiment, but high quality glass is usually worth the investment.

Green for OP.

Just So you know, You will have to operate in manual mode when using this lens.
Notice there is no "A" on the aperture ring to set it for use on your camera, which means that the camera can not automatically adjust the exposure in program mode or aperture or shutter priority mode. you have to manually set the aperture by twisting the aperture ring to the appropriate F-stop, than pick a shutter speed for proper exposure. You exposure compensation dial won't work either.
I have a similiar Tamron lens I use on my Pentax K-10.
Also, Auto focus may or may not work, on mine I have to use manual focus as well. Pictures are fine looking.
Good Price, just be prepared to go manual.

The way I see it, the 28-80 is a waste of money. You'd be better of putting the 99 bucks towards a sigma 70-300 APO or tamron 70-300 DI or even buy a used one of these for that amount...

Forgot to say that I am speaking of the 70-300mm lens.

p.s.
this lens came in 2000 according to the review

Autofocus for me. Make sure all the setting are correct.

Just tested it, quick pic, through dirty window, just handheld

got one with 10% off coupon, can not combine with 9% bing CashBack. Green for OP.

Yours must be different, pulled the lens out of the box, these have the following settings:

A 22 16 11 8 5.5 4

Sell the 28-80 on eBay for about $40, and you still have the camera bag and 70-300 for about $65.

Just need some cheap lens to play with. This is good. btw, they are autofocus

Not bad.... Thanks for the reminding.

I can't vouch for the Pentax version, but the Minolta version of the 28-80 is a very good and affordable alternative to a real macro prime lens. It has a switch to do 1:2 macro at 80mm, which gives you very close minimum focus distance. It is not a very sharp as a zoom, but quite sharp as a macro.

Both lenses have a Macro Switch and lens hood

Please note that the Minolta is only $78 because it has free shipping

Care to elaborate? what's wrong with a 28-80mm lens? Or are you talking about this one in particular?

wow. 32 left.

Thanks OP!

I didn't go for the Minolta kit but I found "Quantaray 261660237 2x AF Tele-Converter for Minolta" for $48~ plus shipping totaling $57.49 and went for that instead. I have a Sony A350. I think it the teleconverter would work with my A350. If anyone knows it won't please let me know. Thanks.

EDIT: I forgot the coupon code so I cancelled and re-ordered. It came out to $52.63 including shipping.

Does anyone know of a deal like this for Nikon lenses?

I got the 28-80mm at Ritz for $18 during the clearance. It's what you would expect from a cheap Sigma lens (I love Sigma's high end stuff, but the low end stuff...ehh). In actuality, you can get some decent pics out of it in outside / moderate light levels. It's an odd lens in that I actually found the sweet spot to not be at f/8 but actually at f/11 (I think it was f/11). Basically, it's worth is in the fact that it does close focus and will take a reasonably sharp picture as long as you don't expect much out of it.

I have no experience with the other lens so I can't say. I will say that you will probably get what you pay for. 2 low to moderate performing lenses for $100.

...personally, I would be happier spending the $100 on some old used manual vivitar lenses or something of the sort, but I also don't mind manual focus.

Thanks OP in for one

In 4 1. Thanks OP.

The Quantarray 19-35 for Minolta AF , which should fit Sony, looks promising as a full-frame wide angle lens. Unfortunately, the full frame A850 costs $2000...

Would the autofocus work with the Sony Alpha? I am so tempted...

good deal. similar 70-300 lenses ( Tamron or Sigma) going for over $100 on eBay or craiglist.

I was just looking for one of these.

In 4 1.

Thanks OP.

A lie if ever be told. While true 70-300mm be better for spotting ships to plunder from a distance, once ye sack said ship ye will wish to record the booty for posterity and upload to the net of inter so ye wench will believe you are actually at work. In such case, the 28-80 be much better for closeups of the pillaged doubloons and jewels as it be macro. As well, it be a right faster lens for taking photos below decks in subdued light. And, ye will use the 28-80 much more, as with the digital factor it be equal to a 43-128mm film lens and is shorter so ye don't be banging 'gainst ye peg leg while on holiday with ye brood.

They have just the 70-300mm for the Nikon, listed with free shipping YMMV so after the 10% it would be $68

Thank you OP for a very well-written, justified, and accurate post.

I look forward to these lenses!

No it is Macro Super their 505 lens. It is the DL not the DG. The lenses in my kit were the 659 and 505 to get the part # you have to add 109 for the Pentax mount i.e 505109

Here is the Sigma list: http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_chart_discontinued.asp

Buy.com has this one listed for this part #

Could someone received the Pentax lens confirm whether there is "A" on the aperture ring? I don't want to lose the ablity to do aperture priority. thanks.

Ready to pull the trigger, but: "Sorry, Product is Out-Of-Stock" (Pentax Mt.)

This lens actually is made by Tokina, its Nikon mount got very good review, do not know about A mount though.

One of THE best posts of NTLAP day/week. Thanks for making me laugh.

Got the Pentax lenses today. They are not new. Lenses are scratched.
