Just called TiVo to cancel as I'm getting rid of my cable, and they said "oh it works with over the air signals". I said I'm getting rid of TV, and just watching movies, they said "it works with netflix" I said, oh that's too bad I have Blockbuster, they said, we are working on that right now, I can give you 3 months free so you won't have to pay until that feature becomes available. I said sure, and they gave me the next billing date so I can call and really cancel then.

Quick read:

Call TiVo
Cancel
They give you 3 months free to not cancel.

Green just because OP provided quick read!

Red because it deserves red.

Hope it works out OK for you... for me, the juice is NOT worth the squeeze. Too many horror stories and bad billing experiences with them in the past. I will NEVER give that company another cent of mine.

It worked for me three times. I bought a computer PVR so I could stop paying for cable and when I called to cancel I told them tough economic times are requiring me to cancel cable and TiVo. They gave their list of features, I said I didn't care I just wanted to save on expenses, then they offered 3 months free each time. I actually paid for two months of service before I threatened to cancel again.

The last time I contemplated cancelling, they dropped me down to $9.95/mo and threw in a free 802.11g adapter. Worked out great because I ended up dropping my landline, so I would have needed that. So far billing has been perfectly fine for me - I use a virtual CC# as a precaution though.

yeah, been there done it, on lifetime at $9.95/month others have dont it now at $6.95/month

I got this a few months ago when I tried to cancel. I actually have never used my TiVo's, I bought two at RS when they had the better than free deal over a year ago. So when the year was up they billed me and I called to complain and cancel and get the month's charge reversed. They asked me not to cancel and I got the 3 free months (which I really didn't want but it was the easiest way to get rid of them) and the billed month reversed. Not wanting to have to go through that again, I changed my billing to a rebate debit card (and which I had emptied out by the time they got to bill me), hoping they'd just cancel my service when they were unable to bill me. Apparently they did not get the message, so I started getting letters from them in the mail about how I owe them money, and they're going to cancel my service (finally!), and put me in for collection. That last one finally got my attention so I called and they cancelled my service, but then the guy asked for a credit card to pay for the month I owed, and I told him he must be kidding, I wanted to cancel last time and they talked me out of it and I've never used the damn things. Finally he spoke to a supervisor and got approval to zero out my account. What a pain!

BTW I still have those Tivos if anyone wants to make an offer (Series 2 80 hour, non-HD) . I had considered using one for my daughter, but I decided that the cost of the subscription plus an extra adapter for FiOS was more than the cost of just upgrading her cable box to a multiroom DVR. I know it's not as nice as a TiVo but it serves the purpose, and I like the multiroom capability. I still use a ReplayTV for myself (with lifetime service).

how does this work for lifetime users? you have already paid the one time price so why are you paying an additional monthly charge?

Exactly like a judge adds 5 years for perjury, to an existing life sentence.

Likely it's for additional Tivos. The lifetime is unit specific for the life of the specific unit it's bought for. Additional Tivos for other TVs in the house qualify for TiVo's multi-service discount.

thanks bibba

I called a little over a month ago to try for a retention offer. I got the whole shebang about the features that TiVo has and I told them I don't have Netflix and the Video on Demand is too slow to use. I think the most they offered was one free month. After I declined the free month, they went ahead with the cancellation.

I have been using it as a dumb vcr by setting manual recordings and have been happy not paying $13 for guide information. I've read that you can do this forever with some of the original Tivos and the DVD model and 30 days for the rest. However, I have the message that it has been over 30 days since the last connection and still can record.

I would highly recommend doing the manual recordings if you don't mind using the internet and/or the guide channel for listings. I usually leave one of the tuners on the guide channel so I can see what is one by going through fast forward.

egad. I have 2 units expiring tomorrow. The CC# they have is no good... thanks for the heads up, Bill. Will get on the phone today.

I harvested the 40GB HD from one of my units to revive a dead Optiplex.

I got the 3 free months about 6 months ago, they've been charging me $12.95 a month for the last 3 months. I actually called right before checking out this thread, best I could do this time was get them to refund the $3/month difference they should've been charging since the 3 free months expired (I have a TiVo on lifetime). So everyone else - is the cheapest month to month price possible right now $9.95? I got my parent's TiVo on to $6.95 years ago, but I'm pretty sure they did away with that price point. Just want to know the lowest price so I know where to haggle to.

Got the three months free, then 9.95/mo with no contract after that.
Anybody got the 6.95/mo lately?

Almost paid the $99/year when I remembered this thread!

Thanks OP...I called and after quite some time of haggling, received a credit for 3 months of service! Not bad!

Despite calling and receiving the retention offer one month ago... My account was charged again.

Thanks a lot TiVo.
