Gateway - Desktop with AMD Phenom™ X4 Quad-Core 4GB / 640GB Gigabit LAN Firewire HDMI $420+S&H @ BB outlet, $349 at Amazon J&R
Seems like a good price to me considering the lack of slick deals from BB lately and with gift cards burning a hole in my pocket, searched for other posts but did not find any.

Note the price does not include shipping, which is about $30, but may be available in store (you can check online), nowhere near me though.

EDIT: As it was pointed out (Thanks BIGFOOT_PI from SD!), this deal sux bad in comparison to Amazon / J&R for $349:

text
Plus if you use BING to go directly to J&R you can get 5% CashBack for $332!

Yes, bestbuy outlet generally stinks, I had hoped I found an exception and a way to possibly spend my gift cards, but in this case I would basically be throwing them away.

Edit: fixed link, thanks!

Thanks Flwsoldier - my copy-paste from my other post messed up the link.

Why are you giving this red, people? This is as good a price as I have seen lately for a quad core, with the exception of the HP when combined with EPP and Bing CashBack! This is a simple out-the-door (actually delivered) deal! Plus it might be available in-store to save shipping. New, not refurb, has most of the bells and whistles and a year warranty, unlike the overstock deals which were refurbs.

EDIT: Never mind, this deal does kinda stink, more info posted in OP (thanks to helpful SD people from that "other" deal site I frequent)

Decent deal, I thought it was a laptop at first..

Shagger said: Decent deal, I thought it was a laptop at first..

Actually, some helpful people on SD (the other deal site) pointed out this kinda stinks. Original post edited.

Woot had this same computer 2 weeks ago for $300, since a wootoff is happening right now, its possible to see a few of these desktops on there

Wow, good price but good luck catching anything during a woot-off! Were they refurbs or new? (These are new.)

Refurbs but that didn't worry me, I opened mine up and it looks to me as if its brand new and was never used.

With BING 5% directly through J&R, this is $332 now - new, full warranty... decent deal.

From some of the comparisons that I've seen the Phenom™ X4 Quad-Core aren't quite as fast as the Intel quads -- as a matter of fact, in several tests the intel dual core out performs the Phenom™ X4 Quad-Core. Comments?

Not sure on the benchmarks. I would think part of it would depend on how much you multitask foru dual-core vs. quad - for example I often find myself recoding video in the background while trying to do a couple other tasks, browsing, cleaning up my hard drive, composing emails, and my old Celeron just doesn't quite cut it.

this computer come with 4gig it will run windows 7 just fine.

green. thanks op

This computer is excellent in my opinion, for daily tasks such as checking your email to watching and edit movies, this PC surpasses my expectations, just make sure to get rid of all the bloatware that comes with this when you receive it and don't forget to preorder your free upgrade Windows 7 disc Link

How much multitasking you do isnt that important in deciding whether a quad core will give you any benefit vs a dual core. If you pull up windows task manager you'll see plenty of processes even just with an idle OS. Mine has 52. Running just a single app, theres plenty of stuff going on between application threads and operating system threads to keep four cores busy.

Now if the app you're using is ridiculously single threaded, which means it was incredibly poorly coded by an idiot who hasnt been paying attention to processor design for the last 6 years, then single or dual cores with much higher MHz and better efficiency than the Phenom will be a better bet. But I dont know of any apps off the top of my head that have one thread that grinds up a lot of cpu. For the most part, games and video transcoding or software video decoding of multiple blu-ray streams or compiling monolithic applications will run dozens, if not hundreds, of processes and threads that the OS will methodically spread out among the cores.

Nice part is if you have a blocking thread or two, you'll still have extra cores to give you good response times.

Sad parts of this system is the cpu is slow at 1.8GHz, the Phenom isnt that great of a quad core, and the video is kind of wimpy. It'd make an decent home theater PC.

For a general use PC, surfing the net, editing family photos etc how would this compare to an Athlon 64 3200+? My system only has 1GB or ram too. I'm on a tight budget and want to buy something that will be noticeabley better but I don't know too much about processors etc.
Thanks!!

Well, I had plans to build my own with the AMD/ECS combo deal last week, but the Newegg box is on its way back, and I went with this one instead. Hard to beat the price (I was already at $250, and I was reusing about 60% of my existing system)

got mine today but it came with the AMD 9750 with a 2.4 GHz, box says 9100e 1.8 GHz so YMMV. I look for more added features tomorrow

Windows 7 link

did anyone else get the processor upgrade. looks like a way better deal

Can this thing render 1080p video to my projector without hiccups?

lexscholar said: Can this thing render 1080p video to my projector without hiccups?
I would search for reviews... I would think video card / GPU would be what you would have to research though...

Where did you order from Bestbuy or JandR? (For people who got the upgraded cpu)

jr

I should get some time tonight to load Belarc and see whats all there. the processor upgrade was also mentioned on Amazon so its confirmed but YMMV. No one else has reported getting the bigger processor but me. Strangely the hard drive per disk manager is smaller but not by much. this has lead me to do a complete review. I couldnt find a desktop with the upgraded processor for under 600 so this was a better deal for me

got mine today with Phenom 9750 Ordered from J&R.

lexscholar said: Can this thing render 1080p video to my projector without hiccups?Search for the capabilities of the integrated Radeon HD 3200 graphics.

[EDIT]
It does 1080p according to this review:
Review

It isn't very often that we get excited about an integrated graphics processor (IGP). Every IGP on the market is painfully inferior to a dedicated graphics card and every IGP on the market struggles to handle high definition video and 3D video games. Not so with the ATI Radeon HD 3200. For the first time ever consumers have a low-cost IGP that offers flawless 1080p video playback and can even play many 3D video games at reasonable frame rates!

I researched the HD 3200 chipset. Anandtech had some good things to say.

The lengthy review indicates it will do 1080p just fine.

give me the weekend and I will test it out on a few games and tell how it is. I have a pcie 512 card that I got way back when BB was blowing them away waiting. I will also check out the power supply, I have just been too busy this week

ridn

EDIT: The game play is OK, the games I ran recognized at medium graphic, I pushed it to high and it didnt feel slow but I dont play the real real hardware type game. I have a card for the box but as mentioned and confirmed the PS is only 300W and will need to be replaced. I yanked the modem and added a capture card and authored a DVD, no complaints there very fast. I am no expert but all in all I think this is a great buy outside the PS needing to be upgraded.

If anyone buys a PS and gets one that has a good fit can you please post. I will hold out on the PS upgrade as I have other things that I need to load. many thanks ridn

I just picked one up from J&R directly today. they were offering free shipping and no tax. they were showing on the top of there page $10 back from a $100 when you pay through Paypal. I did that as well as went through Bing for the 5% Cash Back. I've never done Bing Cash Back so i hope I get it! It appears that everyone buying from J&R got the upgraded CPU, I hope I get the same! Thanks OP, Green!

Can anyone tell me what's Bing? thanks!

bubble20yz said: Can anyone tell me what's Bing? thanks! After you sign up for Bing CashBack, sign into Bing, select the store, place order. (You must go to the store from Bing.) Some time later you will get a CashBack reward confirmation email from Bing. Think it takes about two month to get paid.
Bing Cashback Faq

well bad news I lost video on it. I tried all weekend to get something but I get nothing out of either. off to call for a RMA number

from what I could tell all looked good, I couldnt try an upgraded video without a PS upgrade so I was just to research that when the video didnt come up. all I see is the blue on button blinking. will post how this goes but frustrated at this point

EDIT: Update on status
No problem getting a shipping label since it was under 30 days after they say its your cost. so its in the mail to see what happens they say its a 7 to 10 day turn around

What a bummer and a letdown!
Please keep us posted.

Do you due diligence on Gateway/Acer/Emachines reliability.

My Emachines desktop's meager power supply blew killing the motherboard recently. Did some googling to be bit shocked by so many other experienced same problem just when 1 yr warranty expired.

Just as DeanStalker18, I purchased one today from J&R online. I also used Bing Cash Back and $10 back when you spend $100 through Paypal. I am keeping my fingers crossed as well that mine ships with the upgraded Phenon 9750! I will advise later.

Did you get some king of confirmation of the $10 from Paypal? Not sure how it is paid but I didn't see anything at checkout...

I got the processor upgrade (9750) but i didn't pay for it! $340 shipped except with a 9750 X4 processor = 2.4GHz vs. 1.8GHz from JR.com.

Great machine. Once i install and new PS and VC i'll be styling. But even as it is it rips through Windows 7 7100 beta RC and video editing and major multitasking. And the case is not too bad either. It could use more USB ports...

So, can I add my HDTV Wonder to this, or will that alone kill the ps?

New lower price 339?
